It has been three years since Steam Circuit (HIGH 054CD, 2008) first glimpsed the light of day and gave us hits like "Edding 850" which shot to the top of the Beatport charts. The two Berliners have been very busy and founded their own label, Formatik Records, about two years ago, amongst many other things. They have already released hits like "Gospel" and various tracks by new and promising artists and also famed producer Sébastien Léger. Their success sent them out on a major world tour: Australia, Asia and into virtually every corner of Europe. They also tapped into the South American market in a big way. They also regularly host a Formatik label night in the world-renowned Berlin club, Watergate. On their last album, Franz and Jakob were to be found covered in soot and coal, firing up the engines of the dance locomotive -- now they've gone greener and swapped over to wind power and are fishing the Restless oceans of the world. Tirelessly, the two sailors work on the deck disregarding the cold and the weather, pulling in the nets filled with floundering hits. This time, they've spiced up the bait with the amazing voice of Fran on "Liquid," who turns into a working class siren and manages to rock the boat properly. Keeping with the maritime theme, the boys have used a harmonica on "Socks & Sandals" and a piano on "Piano Man." Classic Format:B can be found on "Atomizer" and "Oversexed" -- high bass beats to thrill the four quarter beat fans -- and "Biker Meth" is going to keep you dancing till noon (at least).

"The first catalogue number from the house of Formatik comes from Format:B. The A-side ('Hot Rod') is a pushing, wooden battering monster in the typical Format:B manner. The 'Hugo Remix' gallops through the house arena like a thoroughbred stallion. Extremely 'wonky' breaks paired with a post modern house beat makes it the perfect alternative. 'Redux' on the B-side is a heavyweight techno layout. Sirens, massive baselines and a dark atmosphere that sometimes, but only sometimes, reminds you of old black and white horror films make this track the perfect addition to this first EP. When dogs meet they don't just lick each other's ears but also put on a silver "Dog Tag." Seeing as the three-legged four-leggers Jakob and Franziskus aren't that happy being alone and are often seen dancing over the dog grounds wagging their tails, they have decided to share their bowl with Sébastien Léger, the French production bulldog who always has a couple of remix Scooby-snacks lying around somewhere. Only The Lady And The Tramp is more romantic than that.

This is the first full-length release by Berlin's Format:B. Steam Circuit comes with a lot of pressure and fun, but by all means is so much more than just a load of hot air. Franziskus Sell and Jakob Hildenbrand always stand out on the Highgrade label with their highly energetic tracks, which are strongly club-oriented without losing musical sense, funkiness or the joy of playing around. Their EP releases Like A Techmachine or the extremely successful Bronson Road are little milestones in Highgrade's label history. Steam Circuit presents new work, plus some of their most successful tracks so far, presented in the form of a DJ mix that demonstrates their whole spectrum: from the dark, bouncing "Edding 850" to trips into more acid-like areas with "Boot Cut" or the easy-rollin' stuff like "Like A Techmachine." When vocals are in the game, Format:B goes one step further "Si Pero No" has the clear potential to hit the scene like Pier Bucci's "Hay Consuelo" did. In cooperation with Jake The Rapper on "Something Suitable," they combine their trademark sub-bass lines with hypnotic sounds and deliver in combination with Jake's vocals the perfect instant-club-banger. All in all, it's a wild ride on the zeitgeist of club sound -- powerful tracks which seem to never lose their breath.

"Their second release on Stil vor Talent. After massive tracks on Opossum and Highgrade Records, their newest EP on Stil vor Talent is another huge minimal monster. 'Kongo Time' is typical for the two Berliners: a flickery percussive loop with some stretched-out effect envelopes over a wobbly drum'n'bass style bassline place this track between freaky rave and minimal chic. It's definitely going to make you trip out for sure! On the flip, it's the funky 'Mondo Time' that builds up over some cuts and bleeps until it leads the listener into pure euphoria when the simple loop kicks in. A huge organic sub bass and some chopped-up vocal samples add the funk to this delirious minimal hit and when it comes to minute 4, you really won't be able to hold your feet still. Format:B are at the top of their game and we are so happy to have them!"
