Artist: GERBER, GUY
Title: Late Bloomers
Label: COCOON (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: COR 012CD
This is the full-length CD debut by Isreal-born Guy Gerber. With the first tracks on Late Bloomers, Gerber already makes clear what this is all about. Not only does he mix house, techno and trance like nobody else -- he also produces with accordion sounds and basslines reminiscent of Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" ("Unfulfilled") without any concern, also showing multiple influences from Carl Craig via Giorgio Moroder to Jean Michel Jarre. The first real climax of the CD is reached on track 5 with Gerber's last 12" smash for Cocoon "Belly Dancing," immediately followed by last year's hit "Sea Of Sand," a track which was not missing from the set of any techno or house DJ in 2006. With "Persona Non Grata," he proves that he keeps his cool. "Moody Samba" offers a total contrast, proving Mr. Gerber's versatility without ever appearing random, sounding like a remix of Aphex Twin's "Analogue Bubblebath." "2 Birds 1 Stoned" is weird and energetic, with basslines that remind of the high times of giant open air raves in Northern England in the beginning of the '90s. After the first part of the CD with its well-known and expected hits, Gerber skillfully brings the listener down again with "Planetarium" and "Last Frequency." The latter track with its arpeggiated lines harkens the Blade Runner soundtrack, only with a shuffled beat underneath. In case you meet someone next week who completely missed the last 15 years of club history, just give him this CD and within a few moments, he will get a comprehensive impression of what has musically happened on the best four-to-the-floors around the world. We bow in awe.

Title: This Is Balagan
Label: COCOON (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: COR 026EP
With no doubt: "This is Balagan" by Guy Gerber (Israel) will be one of the upcoming anthems of the summer -- floor reactions are overwhelming already! In his very own style, Guy Gerber combines Balearic-spiced chords with electrohouse beats and fat acid basslines, definitely different to what's out there at the moment. This one should please fans of Mole People's "Break Night" and followers of Border Community, for sure.

Title: Disorientation
Label: SUPPLEMENT FACTS (ISRAEL)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: SFR 008EP
"The first 2008 release from Guy Gerber's Supplement Facts imprint comes from Gerber himself with 'Disorientation,' including remixes from two of the most hotly-tipped production talents Johnny D and Reboot. 'I made "Disorientation" after a tour in South America in January this year. Some of my friends describe it as a futuristic Ennio Morricone-sounding track, which is pretty amazing. I had the saxophone sample from a friend for a long time and was always playing with it, but all the time it was too "pretty" for me. Until a few friends joined me for a late night session; about 8a.m., I was twisting it through a very cool effect and I got this very weird harmony out of it, and I knew that it was made.' With 'Disorientation,' Gerber's sound has taken a more natural, house-y direction than his previous workings. Just as he describes, 'Disorientation' spends the first half layering: we start with a clean kick drum balanced between a ping-pong ball batting back and forth, synths descend and wash over, a violin strings through the top layer, the bass drops in, the reverb works in between and the saxophone hits for the mid-way drama. Coming down, the tension keeps a steady pace as the layers gradually become less, the bass departs and we are left with only the sounds with which we began."
