"Always the same melody, forever the same rhythm... Philip Glass immediately sends his audiences into a trance, and Steffen Schleiermacher is the perfect interpreter of this composer's captivating will. The music of Philip Glass appears to be completely predictable. Already after a few minutes it becomes clear that the note flow will continue undisturbed, that no additional element will produce modifications. The clever alternation between duple and triple time simultaneously creates the impression of variability in the metrical pulse of the music without adherence to an identifiable plan. Glass seems to compose out of a box of building blocks, with prefabricated parts -- but always makes for surprises. Philip Glass composed these work for his own ensemble. He wanted to perform them with various keyboards, saxophones, clarinets, and flutes and without having to rely on the services of specific musicians. He did not supply any further instructions, and Steffen Schleiermacher fully avails himself of this freedom. For this recording he played
How Now
on the piano. He presents the two other pieces --
Music In Fifths
and
Music In Similar Motion
-- in a version for several electric keyboards recorded in succession and then mixed. In compliance with 'historical performance practice' he chose only those sound registers coming close to the Farfisa organs typifying the 1960s."

Symphony No. 6 - Plutonian Ode
Label:
ORANGE MOUNTAIN
Format:
2CD
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
OMM 020CD
"Philip Glass'
Symphony No. 6 - Plutonian Ode
was co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Brucknerhaus Linz to celebrate the composer's 65th birthday. The work's libretto was written by his late friend, Allen Ginsberg. Glass explains, '
During the last ten years of Allen's life we had performed frequently together in poetry/music collaborations. Allen was a superb reader of his own work and I was often inspired to compose new piano music for these occasional collaborations. In the case of
Hydrogen Jukebox
, we developed an evening length opera which was designed by Jerome Sirlin and directed by Ann Carlson. We presented that work in over 30 cities as part of an international tour. It had been our plan to make a new, major collaboration based on his epic poem
Plutonium Ode
(1978). Before he died in 1997, Allen had made several recordings for me of the poem in preparation for the new work. At that time I had in mind simply an extended piano work to accompany Allen in live performance. I put aside the project in 1997, feeling that I wouldn't want to go ahead without Allen. A few years past and the commission of a new symphony from Carnegie Hall and the Brucknerhaus Linz reawakened my interest in the project. I felt, then, that
Plutonium Ode
was unfinished business between Allen and myself and this would be the opportunity to complete it. By then, the piano music I had originally imagined had grown to a full orchestra and Allen's resonant speaking voice to a lyric soprano. The three movements of the symphony follow the three parts of the poem, and follow, also, the passage of the poem -- the first movement is a passionate outcry against nuclear contamination and pollution, the second a turn towards healing, and the final movement an epiphany arrived at through personal transformation.
' This new world-premiere recording from Orange Mountain, performed by soprano Lauren Flanigan accompanied by the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, brings this powerful work to life. As a special bonus, the set includes a disc of Allen Ginsburg reading the original poem."

Uakti: Aguas da Amazonia
Label:
ORANGE MOUNTAIN
Format:
CD
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
OMM 026CD
"Philip Glass's serious work in the field of world music was recognized long before the term entered the popular vocabulary. One of his most fruitful projects was with Brazilian ensemble Uakti (pronounced wah-keh-chee). Over the last twenty years, award winning experimental group Uakti has developed a major international following. Constructing all their own instruments, Uakti takes their name from a character from Brazilian Indian legends who had holes all over his body and as he ran through the forest, the wind passed through his body making fantastic unusual sounds. After being introduced to Glass by Paul Simon, Uakti and Glass composed a work together for Grupo Corpo, a Brazilian dance company. The result was
Aguas da Amazonia
-- an aural journey through the waters of the Amazon."

Unreleased recordings from the late 70s, performed by Glass (Farfisa, Yamaha & Hammond organs, Fender Rhodes piano, Arp synthesizer). "New release which contains three seminal works in Glass's musical history. In the late 1970s, Philip Glass was asked by two film producers, Francois de Menil and Barbara Rose, to write music for a film they were producing. The film was
Mark di Suervo, Sculptor
and it was Glass's first film score, predating even
Koyaanisqatsi
. The score took its titles from the names of di Suervo sculptures shown in the film, including Etoile Polaire (North Star) and others. The disc also includes 'Dressed Like an Egg' -- a never before released early Glass score which was written as incidental music to a Mabou Mines Theater Company production in 1977. The disc is rounded out with another never-before-heard recording of Glass' 'Mad Rush' for organ. The work was originally used by choreographer Lucinda Childs for a dance of the same name. All the performances on

Label:
ORANGE MOUNTAIN
Format:

Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
OMM 033CD
"In 2004, Orange Mountain Music released an album of solo piano transcriptions of Philip Glass' Oscar and Golden Globe nominated score to
The Hours
. These transcriptions were done by Glass' longtime music director and pianist Michael Riesman. Riesman's solo piano transcription of the score to
The Hours
proved so successful that Orange Mountain Music was inspired to approach Riesman again to make an arrangement of Glass' haunting score to Todd Browning's 1931 classic
Dracula
, which starred Bela Lugosi. Glass' original score was written for string quartet and was recorded and toured by the Kronos Quartet. This new arrangement of the score is treated to a truly virtuosic performance by Michael Riesman and includes a previously-unrecorded track which was composed by Glass but was left out of the soundtrack recording. Riesman's extraordinary playing brings life and phenomenal craftsmanship to a seemingly timeless musical score."

"
In The Upper Room
is a collaboration between choreographer Twyla Tharp and composer Philip Glass. This new disc marks the first complete recording of the 1986 ballet. The first recording of the work, released on Sony's Dance Pieces, presented only five of the work's nine movements. Also, Sony's disc heavily reinforced the acoustic instruments with synthesized tracks, presumably to artificially thicken the orchestral sound. This new, definitive recording uses only acoustic instruments, as the composer originally intended."

"Philip Glass' opera
Kepler
in many ways harkens back to Glass' portrait operas of the early 1980s and continues the composer's interest in scientists after having also written operas on Einstein and Galileo. The opera premiered at the Landestheater Linz in 2009 and continues the amazing 30 year collaboration between Glass and the conductor Dennis Russell Davies, the music director of both the Landestheater Linz and its orchestra, the Bruckner Orchester.
Kepler
marks a refreshing return to large scale symphonic writing for the opera house. It is a musical dedication to the life of this great scientist -- exploring both his triumphs and his human flaws. As Glass states,
'Kepler was a man with his mind in the clouds and his feet in the mud.'
Taken from live performances in 2010 during its extensive run in Linz, this is the world premiere recording. It is sung in German and Latin and contains the full libretto with English translation in the deluxe two disc digipack."

It was not until 2007 that Glass had the chance to hear the work live in the concert hall when Wendy Sutter performed the US première in California. Glass encouraged Sutter to perform the work extensively and this recording was made during a tour with the Orchestra of the Americas."

It is an exciting tour-de-force with three orchestral movements enveloped in duets by the soloists. The second work on this disc is Glass's first piano concerto, the
Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra
