Artist: GUBAIDULINA, SOFIA
Title: Glorious Percussion/In Tempus Praesens
Label: BIS (SWEDEN)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: BIS 1752CD
"Coinciding with her 80th birthday, this substantial addition to Sofia Gubaidulina's discography on BIS presents two recent works by the grande dame of contemporary music. As always with this composer, the music is intimately connected to her religious and philosophical beliefs. In the violin concerto In tempus praesens the numbers 1 and 3 -- derived from the Holy Trinity -- play an important role, as well as the concept of 'Sophia', implying divine wisdom and the creative power of God. The work was premiered by Anne-Sophie Mutter at the 2007 Lucerne Festival, and belongs to the most frequently performed instrumental concertos by a living composer." Performed by: Vadim Gluzman, violin; Glorious Percussion (Anders Loguin, Anders Haag, Mika Takehara, Eirik Raude, Robyn Schulkowsky); Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Jonathan Nott, conductor.

Title: Chamber Music With Double Bass
Label: NEOS (GERMANY)
Format: 3CD
Price: $49.00
Catalog #: NEOS 11106/8CD
"When I took up the double bass many years ago I developed certain premonitions of what music for double bass might be. The elemental force of its dark, earthy tone, and especially its incidental sounds, noises and overtone series, kindled my imagination. Over the years I have performed many pieces that skillfully exploit the instrument's potential. But in Sofia Gubaidulina's work I found music that exhausts the essence of my instrument in previously unparalleled depth and truthfulness. Here I was able to revisit the sonic fantasies of my past, brilliantly compressed into musical form. The present recording is being released in honor of Sofia Gubaidulina's 80th birthday. Especially in recent years she has increasingly written music for the double bass and produced new double bass versions of several earlier pieces. Our recording allows listeners to hear these works for the first time in their entirety. It also allows them to retrace the evolution of her music over a period of five decades." --Martin Heinze. Featured artists: Martin Heinze, double bass; Heike Gneiting, piano.

Title: Am Rande des Abgrunds/De Profundis/Quaternion/In Croce
Label: WERGO (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: WER 6684
"To celebrate Sofia Gubaidulina's 75th birthday, Wergo ofers this new CD of the composer's chamber music. Joining Julius Berger and Stefan Hussong, two well-known interpreters of new music, are Sofia Gubaidulina and her colleague, Viktor Suslin. In Am Rande des Abgrunds Gubaidulina and Suslin play aquaphones -- instruments which resemble water-filled censers with strange decorations. Their sound is rich in overtones and quite unusual, and contrasts sharply with the shimmering sound of the strings. These unusual instruments are an expression of the composer's eagerness to experiment, actively and consciously grappling with the sound worlds of the cultures of Africa and East Asia."
