SPEAKS 001EP
"With a label HQ based half way up a cliff in deepest North Devon, and an artist roster that includes a Hampshire lad living in Leeds, a crew of Cubans holed up in Hackney, and the hottest new thing to come up out of Leicester since Willie Thorne hung up his cue, new label Shifting Peaks won't be easy to pin down geographically. And musically, it promises to be no less diverse, covering everything from the deeper end of Funky and 2010 Garage to Cuban hip-hop and dubbed out beats. Kicking things off in style for the label is Leeds resident Hackman, whose 'Pistol in Your Pocket' tune was one of the highlights of the recent Fabric/Elevator comp. Lead cut 'Always' employs the vocal talents of newcomer Harper Lake over a bumping UKF/Nu Garage backing that's both warm and deep, combining proper hooks with easy dancefloor appeal. Fast rising Londoner Brackles then takes the song and straps on a phuture-garage turbo-charger, adding techno textures and slamming beats for a crunching, dynamic rework. An instrumental version of Hackman's original work appears in its own right, and to round the package off, the dubheads also get 'Multicultural,' a deep, percussion-driven roller perfect for late night jams and red-eyed headphone excursions alike."

STUDR 010EP
"Born in Winchester and now based in Leeds, Ben 'Hackman' epitomizes all that is fresh and exciting about the dubstep scene in 2009. First up is 'Loophole'-- a slice of futuristically industrial music. Melodically unsettling synth stabs set the tone early, whilst snippets of a seductive pitch-shifting vocal teamed with atmospheric pads lead us further into the mix. A frenetic bass-line breaks the tension as the track takes hold and leads us into darker territories. Simultaneously unnerving and undeniably catchy 'Loophole' refuses to conform to our already formulaic preconceptions of this genre yet remains infinitely more rewarding as a result. Next 'Illusionz' delves into Hackman's more melodic side and truly demonstrates his versatility as a producer. A deep Balearic piano riff takes us beyond the boundaries of dubstep and it's not before the bass-line wobbles its way through the speakers that we begin to find ourselves back on familiar ground. A dense percussive tapestry is woven into the mix before that hypnotic riff takes off once again and invites us to forget everything and embark upon a journey to new sonic territories. 'Nocturne' arrives in stark contrast to its predecessor and seems designed to cause havoc on any dance-floor it finds. An eerily atmospheric intro lulls us into a false sense of security whilst dark synth stabs seem almost to hint at what is to follow. A drop of epic proportions ensues, deep subs and bass strains multiplying within a monstrous soundscape sure to test even the biggest of sound systems."
