This is the debut full-length release from
HTRK
(an acronym for "Hate Rock Trio"). Originally from Melbourne, Australia, they moved to Berlin in 2007, and then to London in 2008. Initially started as the duo of
Sean Stewart
and
Nigel Yang
in 2003, they later added vocalist
Jonnine Standish
for a moody/no wave rock trio formation that is made all the more compelling by repetitive, stupor-inducing bass lines, industrial drum-machine clangs, streaking guitar and Standish's smoky, vaguely tuneless, amorphous voice. Steadily building significant buzz, their
Ha/Panties (Live)
12"/download was named "single of the month" by February 2009's
Artrocker
: "
...more mood than band, they are a feeling, a trance
."
John Kennedy
-- a highly influential DJ at the UK's hot-tip radio station XFM -- is a big fan and has plugged the single several times. Glasgow's Optimo club and London's White Heat were early adopters with regular club plays and several live shows. Fire Records originally released their demo package
Nostalgia
(2007), and since then, the band has garnered constant praise and interest that is spreading from shore to shore -- perhaps even more so having performed as an opener for
Liars
in Europe in 2008. Captivatingly murky, new post-rock scrawl whose sparseness harkens UK warehouse spaces of old.
