Catalog #:
EAR 43035LP
"Now available on double LP. Definitely the ultimate Tubby compilation, this album covers the brightest and most productive years (1972-74) in this producer/dubmaster's musical history without carrying some of the obnoxious assemblages that made some of Tubby's collections useless and/or poorly compiled.
In Fine Style
is a title that truly adapts to the contents of this LP, since it features some of the greatest dubs of reggae monsters of the 1970s like the Upsetters, Horace Andy, Niney the Observer, Augustus Pablo, plus the Aggrovators."

SELEC 2005CD
Awaiting repress. This is a mid-line priced repress of the classic collection
100% Of Dub - Select Cuts
, originally issued in 2003 on Select Cuts. Jamaican sound engineer and musical aesthete
Osbourne Ruddock
(aka King Tubby) is widely credited with being the original dub creator. The results of his experiments in the early and mid-1970s pervade all areas of contemporary dance music. King Tubby's instrument was the mixing desk, and like jazz musicians before him, his passion was finding ways to make it do things that hadn't been done before. King Tubby was an electronics genius, the self-taught master of circuitry and sound, skills learned during his time as a repairman in a culture where poverty dictated that you didn't throw things away if they could be fixed -- you improvised instead. It began during a stint with
Ruddy Redwood
's Treasure Isle Sound System. Tubby single-handedly innovated the primitive echo and reverb units to his Home Town Hi-Fi system, adding the extra spatial dimension that became the hallmark of dub. He played an instrumental right after the original version ("version" became the original term for what later became known as a "dub cut," or simply a "dub") and the crowd went crazy. Back home in his primitive studio (his mother's house in the Waterhouse district), he went further, creating a sort of DIY graphic equalizer that allowed him to take out various elements, accentuate others and end up with the signature, beautiful bass-heavy echoing sound. It was a sensation -- a full, warm, mind-bending groove -- and soon enough, King Tubby was the most sought-after engineer in Jamaica. Listen to the twenty groundbreaking tracks of shimmering bass-heavy magic. All of the production is under
Fatman
and
Bunny Lee
control with mixing beauties by King Tubby in the King Tubby studio. Dizzy rhythms by
Sly Dunbar
&
Robbie Shakespeare
and more significant perfection by the creme of Jamaican studio artists like
Earl "Chinna" Smith
,
Jackie Mittoo
,
Aston Barrett
,
Augustus Pablo
, just to name a few.
100% of Dub - Select Cuts
is an exercise in innovation and perfection, it is a story about sound manipulations in a style of music that possessed its own innate spirituality -- the spacious echo and vast reverb emitting a profound vibe.
