Yes, this a trippy, psychedelic album, in the tradition of the Dots' Chemical Playschool albums, but it's been dusted with magical powders from the Orient, making it an altogether different experience from its predecessors. As experimental and esoteric works go, this is the band's definitive work. The album was conceived in 2004, following a Legendary Pink Dots tour. Edward Ka-Spel met with Soleilmoon owner Charles Powne, who had recently returned from a stay in India. "Hearing that our 2009 Paris show was to be in small space called Le Klub, I admit being unable to stop a smile spreading across my face. During the sound check in another Paris club years earlier, a record label representative was experiencing problems over a guest list at the door. Filled with anger, he burst into the hall ranting and cursing in Parisian pidgeon English...This klub is fuckeeeng!' Those words instantly entered Dots-mythology -- an utterance used to let off steam in the face of frustration on the road (and always with a French accent). Legendary Pink Dots played a two-night residency at Le Klub, and the utterance was never needed. The first night was an intimate affair, while the second, which drew a weekend crowd, felt like a rock show in a shoebox. "Canta Mientras Puedas is of course Spanish for 'Sing While You May', and there are doubtless many people who will be asking themselves why The Legendary Pink Dots have chosen this unfamiliar language to give their second anthology album a title. The reason is that all members of The Legendary Pink Dots recently became followers of the obscure Romanian philosopher Iancu Ponguthrescu, who -- unlike many visionaries -- saw a wonderful, optimistic future for the world. Indeed the blessed Iancu predicted that a glorious golden age would begin for the planet in 1997 and would last for 25 million years. To this end, all wars would cease on December 31, 1996, all races and religions would unite, everyone would simultaneously turn into vegetarians, the city of Frankfurt would become a permanent free festival, and all borders would be cast aside. People would smile ALL THE TIME. The only exception would be a small village in Argentina called Los Voyos, where a mysterious cloud would hover, causing sore throats for the entire population of 68 people. This ailment would be incurable -- the people would never be able to sing again! Hence, the Pink Dots feel it's necessary to warn these innocent villagers now so they can move a little down the dusty path to a safer place. But how could the Pink Dots do this? The answer naturally is an album collecting together all of their seductive songs of the last five years. An album so beautiful and melodic that it would be piped through loudspeakers in the streets of Buenos Aires, and just maybe someone visiting the city would buy it and take heed of its very serious message. Including rare tracks and previously unreleased versions is the icing on the cake."
