"Lump returns with a new EP where his trademark dub sounds begin to flirt with techno and house, leading to a three-way on the dancefloor. London-based Arttu Snellman has been creating refined electronic dub productions since 2002, with a string of 12"s on Sub Static, Süd Electronic and Rrygular, and a full-length for Jay Haze's Future Dub imprint. While that album explored meditative and ambient moods, Lump's new EP for Contexterrior was crafted with the club in mind. Mr. Snellman claims to produce music only when he's in a good mood, and you can certainly hear a sense of optimism behind 'Confusion' as anti-Diva Lerato's filtered vocals swirl around the beat's turbulent bounce. Equally upbeat, but more playful and experimental, is the flip-side 'Music Lover.' Myriad micro-elements flutter throughout, weaving in and out of your consciousness, bound together by the constant syncopated bassline."

"Lump is Arttu Snellman from Finland, who first appeared on Sub Static over two years ago, and is not to be confused with the Swiss Lump who recently came up on Mental Groove Ltd. Arttu lives and works in London, where he's employed as a cartoonist at Icepics, a cartoon -- an animation film studio in Soho. Those fairly worn-out attributes like 'minimal' and 'dubby' would definitely match his style of music, but this completely radical, however always humorous way Arttu builds up his tracks and lets them turn deeper and deeper, makes the Lump-sound something very distinctive and almost sounds like an auditory interpretation of cartoons. The digitally-masked, but incredibly organic mass of sound gets ripped open again and again by absurd breaks and unexpected found-footage fragments. Lump is a shy, inconspicuous godfather of minimal electronics, to whom the common and respected techniques of his own genre seem to be completely strange.

Lump is dub -- the groovy, funky, ass-shakin' kind of style. This piece of wax is Lump's third record on Rrygular and stands in line with releases on FutureDub, Karloff and Sud Electronic. "Fear and Lies" contains some striking vocals by Lerato and Kleinschmager Audio presents a lively, open-air-ish remix with some credits to the old school sound. In contrast to their own more stringent productions, this track has a larger bandwidth. Directed straight to the floor.
