Price:

Catalog #:
ALP 062CD
Much anticipated release of early material (including unissued stuff) from the NYC master of high-art/lo-destruction vinyl manipulation. Features tracks from 1981 through 1989: early cassette-only material, obscure comp tracks, etc., packaged with detailed annotation from Marclay and liner notes from Thurston Moore. "One Thousand Cycles" is from one of Marclays's infamous recycled records -- cut up and reconfigured vinyl. "Second Coming" & "His Master's Voice" are relatable to hip hop dj-ing, but with Marclay's distinct cut-up aura; "Groove" is a massive looped drone track. The whole thing reeks of historic significance, yet still sounds vital in a contemporary sense as well -- this is the record you have been waiting for.

Soundtrack from the video
Guitar Drag
, 2000. Recorded in San Antonio Texas, on November 18th 1999. 12" one-sided transparent vinyl. 14 minutes. "The record is actually the soundtrack for Marclay's video with the same title that was shown first at London's Hayward Gallery sound art exhibition Sonic Boom in 2000. The piece as well as Marclay has become an icon in sound art circles, and although the video can only be seen in exhibitions as an installation, it is widely known. The full 14-minute soundtrack is released on a beautiful 12" clear vinyl record packaged in a sleeve with stills from the video. Filmed in San Antonio Texas, it shows an amplified Fender Stratocaster guitar attached to a rope being pulled behind a pick-up truck. As the guitar drags across the road it produces a range of sounds from the bumping and the friction against the varied surfaces. A fantastic visual piece, but also an amazing sound piece, that stands just as well alone, and in some ways just as visual! From the first sounds of duct-tape being ripped, the familiar sound of someone gently slamming the strings of the guitar, to the sounds of an engine starting and then slowly the beginning of a sound that is hollow and at the same time human, and that takes us through the deepest roarings to high pitched screams until the very end when it all slows down and stops, unwillingly it seems. Knowing the story behind the work or not, the sound itself triggers your imagination, leaving your soul no peace. For even if this could be seen, or heard, solely as a beautiful noisy sound piece, there is too much to the idea behind
Guitar Drag
, for it to not leave you restless and thoughtful."

"Since 1979 Christian Marclay has been experimenting, composing and performing with phonograph records. His interest in records, both as objects and bearers of sound, is expressed through sculpture, performance, video and music. In performance, he mixes a wide variety of records on up to 8 turntables, fragmenting, repeating, altering speeds, playing the records backwards, etc.

was originally released as a 10" vinyl record on No Man's Land (Germany) in 1988, composed entirely of records after whom each track is titled. "John Cage" is a recording of a collage made by cutting slices from several records and gluing them back together into a single disc. In all other places the records were mixed and manipulated on multiple turntables and recorded analog with the use of overdubbing. A hand-crank gramophone was used in "Louis Armstrong".

is a classic slice of primal Plunderphonia, the natural companion to John Oswald's suppressed

masterpiece, featuring a series of viciously beautiful vinyl collages from this important and influential sound sculptor and turntable terrorist." Other tracks are based on the music of Johann Strauss, John Zorn, Martin Denny, Frederic Chopin, Fred Frith, Arthur Ferrante & Louis Teicher, Maria Callas, Jimi Hendrix, Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg & Christian Marclay.
