"A Static Place is about the journey of sound. Between 1928 and 1932 the earliest recordings of historically informed performances of music from the late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque era were etched into 78 RPM records. I used some of these records from my collection, playing them back with two mechanical acoustic HMV Model 102 gramophones. The initial soundwaves produced back then by period instruments like the clavichord, viols, lute, hurdy-gurdy are read from the grooves by a cactus needle to be amplified by the gramophones diaphragm housed in a soundbox. Those vibrations travel through the tone arm which is connected straight to the gramophone's horn, which releases the music to my space. Here the sound is again picked up by a pair of customized microphones and sent to my computer, to be transformed by spectral analysis and convolution processes." -- Stephan Mathieu, Madrid, Nov. 31, 2010

"Stephan Mathieu is an electronic musician from Saarbruecken, Germany. Starting out as a drummer in various improvised contexts he made the switch to working mainly with computers in the late 90´s. Since then he has released a string of highly acclaimed recordings on labels like Ritornell, Fällt and Orthlorng Musork. His music is mostly based on acoustic instruments but so far it has always been more or less heavily computer processed. On Tape is a pivotal work for Mathieu as this is the first time we hear him leaving his source material unprocessed. Mathieu started building this record from recordings provided to him by Swedish trio Tape and saxophonist Magnus Granberg. Adding his own subtle drumming, field recordings and electronics this is a beautiful album that weaves elements from the electronic and acoustic worlds to a seamless whole. A very clear and uncomplicated atmosphere around this piece distinguishes it from a lot of electronic music."

Original recordings from a Kapotte Muziek concert from August 1996, reworked by Stephan Mathieu. "With my rework for the Dutch band Kapotte Muziek, this concept topped itself out. I spent eight months processing raw material, resulting in the usual several gigabytes. When it was about time for me to finish the piece I returned to my files to edit them down in ProTools (Mac OS9). I re-listened to everything, made some adjustments, and then rebooted in OSX to work in Soundhack. After a little while my machine crashed, hard -- so hard that all I could do to restart it was to take out the batteries. When I finally rebooted in OSX it did nothing else but play this music for 30 minutes, a medley of my Kapotte Muziek material, finished by the computer itself. Kapotte Muziek, ironically enough, translates as 'damaged music'."
