Title: A Doughnut In Both Hands (Solo Singing 1975-1982)
Label: EMANEM (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: EMANEM 4025CD
"Solo singing. The variety of sounds that this man can make with his voice and mouth is totally unbelievable. Reissue of Rift 3 with extra material from the same and slightly later sessions." "In the late 1960s and early 1970s, several musicians radically extended their ranges, to make sounds not envisaged by the designers of their instruments. This was usually achieved by finding new techniques or by adding amplification or by devising new instruments. Perhaps the most remarkable of these extensions was that of Phil Minton. In most other cases, one could work out how he managed to extend his voice in so many directions, merely left the investigator with a sore throat. The first 15 tracks on this CD comprised his first solo album, which came out on Fred Frith's Rift label in the USA. Most are free improvisations exploring one or more aspects of his remarkable chops. In order to expand the collection to CD length, some additional tracks were added.

Title: Past
Label: RECOMMENDED (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: RER IDA018
"Since the beginnings of his career in 1962, Minton's unique vocalising and 'mouth noises' have been a regular feature of his many works with Mike Westbrook, Lindsay Cooper, Roger Turner, News from Babel and hundreds of others. On Past, Minton is accompanied by pianist Weston (himself a giant in the Euro-Jazz world), who seems to bring out the best and most remarkable of Minton's talents to date. The two embark upon this musical journey from an approach quite different than most of their contemporaries; whether going about a free-form odyssey that spurs the singer's penchant to eschew the readily received notions of Jazz, or staying more put within that style's parameters, this disk exhibits the excellence and professional confidence only obtainable by many years' worth of experience and hard work. It is an exceptional offering that pays homage to Jazz as we know it, while proceeding to take it into farther-out, uncharted territories."
