It's beautiful & delicate, hypnotic & uplifting. It's out-there. But it's in-here too! It features a melee of sound including strings, piano, a glockenspiel, buzzing beats, ghostly voices and a children's choir multilayered with field recordings of birds, leaves, water and snow melting. There's even the sound of an old bamboo xylophone slowly crumbling apart. Such aural enjoyment invites the listener to conjure up personal visions of the landscapes and color that inspired this magical album. Just as the pauses between & during the songs are elegantly arranged, like oxygen allowing the music to breath and come alive, so too are the three spaces, like three silent beats, used in the title of the record, 'Eyes Set Against The Sun' Chantal Passamonte aka Mira Calix is adored by the media due to her all-encompassing involvement with the arts. "Mira Calix's (aka Chantal Passamonte) debut album is back on Warp in the US with two bonus tracks including a gorgeous Boards of Canada remix. From the start it was clear that this was a new take on electronic music, one that reflecting her love of strung out, avant garde guitar blazers like Spaceman 3 and My Bloody Valentine as much as any techno influence. "A soul record. By a singer-songwriter. On Warp. Electronic music, but not as we know it. Its predecessor, OneOnOne, was red, but this is white. Beautiful, evocative, romantic, a 61-minute piece, or movement, with no spaces, no gaps, and lots of interesting noises conjured from unusual sources. Mira Calix says that Skimskitta, her new album, is all of the above. Controversially, she also considers it a guitar record. Hardly any of the 21 tracks, she says, are without some element of her battered Fender Stratocaster. Not that you can pick out big riffs or anything. Nor, even, could you really say that her time playing with Radiohead has necessarily taught her how to redefine guitar music. You'll also struggle to pick out the vocals. But they're there. Skimskitta is just Mira Calix, and just sounds like itself."
