Ayatollah
Label:
BASIC REPLAY (GERMANY)
Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
BRJM 001EP
"
Ayatollah
is an apocalyptic record, full of dread -- dubwise and deep from the first chords of Jackie Mittoo's interstellar keys, over classic Wackies-style steppers drum and bass -- with a dream-like atmosphere in which pain and suffering are swirled together with devotional mystery and redemption. Originally released on the Nefertiti label, like Rocking Universally this is from the early eighties (and the B-side here is another essential, extended version of that rhythm -- dancefloor murder), when Jackie Mittoo was between New York and Toronto. Such a killer."

"Jackie Mittoo, organ and piano maestro, was also one of the founding members of Jamaica's top session band The Skatalites. Musical arranger for Studio One, he provided the backbone to so many of Jamaica's finest tunes. Here Jamaican Recordings have captured some fine 1970s cuts that feature Jackie's numerous talents, showing his ability to embellish tracks with a feel that few could better. Musical arranger, band leader, all round studio ace, we hope you enjoy the set." Includes three extra tracks.

Wishbone
Label:
LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
LITA 021CD
"Black, bold and beautiful, the joyous reissuing of Jackie Mittoo's extra-rare Canadian debut
Wishbone
is the fourth and perhaps most anticipated release in Light In the Attic's ongoing
Jamaica to Toronto
series. Over the years many have paid tribute to the dynamic range and skills of the late, great Jackie Mittoo. From the emergence of ska right through to rocksteady and the boss sounds of reggae, he was front and center -- a pivotal figure and a sharp move-maker. Even after relocating to Canada, a land not necessarily known for its funk factor, this Studio One veteran worked tirelessly to share his gift and spread the music of Jamaica to a wider audience.
Wishbone
's 12 songs reach far beyond the island rhythms of reggae and into the realms of stone cold soul, funk, gospel and R & B -- an indication of the eclectic sounds that ruled the action-packed live music scene of Toronto in the day. Ranging from the entrancing Jamaica-meets-Santana vibe of 'Grand Funk' to the undeniable percussive bounce of 'Groovy Spirit,' while 'Soul Bird' sounds like an upbeat Jimmy Smith grinder, as the keyboard king takes us on an orchestral baroque/mod journey with the organ/harpsichord fuelled 'Steeple in the Snow.' Sweeping, ebullient Gospel-tinged reggae comes courtesy of the vocal-strings-and tings 'Love of Life,' and the cool rocksteady beat of the maestro's 'Mother Funk.' As one of the first Jamaican-Canadian albums to hit the '70s marketplace,
Wishbone
was a pioneering move from a recent immigrant. Criminally undocumented and kept a sweet soul secret by record collectors until now, this is a primetime slice of Mittoo magic, available to all."

Last Train To Skaville
Label:
SOUL JAZZ RECORDS (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$18.00

SJR 080CD
"Jackie Mittoo is one of the most important artists in the history of Jamaican music. As founding member of the legendary Skatalites, as in-house arranger/producer at the equally legendary Studio One and as a solo artist in his own right leading groups such as The Soul Brothers, Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors. The Soul Brothers recorded at Studio One between 1965-1967, the transitionary period between Ska and Rocksteady. Their music was a mixture of Jamaican Funk, Latin and Jazz sometimes with a reminder of Ska and the hint of Rocksteady. The previous era of Ska had been dominated by the Skatalites. The Skatalites were made up of Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett, Tommy McCook, Ernest Ranglin and Lester Sterling. Clement Dodd described the Soul Brothers mix of musical styles as Ska, Jump-Up and Soul sounds. The opening track 'Train to Skaville' signalled the end of the Ska era, as the Soul Brothers started to forge a new sound.
The classic and rare recordings included here, however, are all from the short period 1965-67 when Jackie Mittoo was developing his new style and the Soul Brothers bridged the gap between Ska and Rocksteady. As Clement Dodd stated at the time
'The Soul Brothers possess a Crystal Clear Sound. Obviously it would be better to Cut the Chatter and Spin the Platter'.
