MOBY GRAPE
Title:
Live Grape
Label:
AKARMA (ITALY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
AK 381CD
"Issued in 1978 without any mention of Moby Grape anywhere (no pictures either), it was a record that fell into the bins because it was released by a small label with no promotion. This features all the original Grape guitarists together again for 'Must Be Goin' Now Dear,' a new Skip Spence track, and was recorded some 10 years after he left the band (discounting the reunion in 1971). Also featuring Cornelius Bumpus and John Oxendine on drums. The record sounds part studio, part warm-up, some live." Also: part asleep, but that goes without saying for any kind of late 70s blues project. The one Skip Spence track is sorta worth it for completists.

, the Grape's second longplayer, released in 1968, is also laced with absolute winners, including courtroom-paranoia classic 'Murder In My Heart For The Judge,' the sprawling, two-wheeled tale of 'Motorcycle Irene' and the rollicking, horn-laced epic, 'Can't Be So Bad.'" Limited stock.

"Moby Grape followed the expansiveness of 1968's
Wow
with an unadorned, back-to-basics sound on this, their fourth long-player. Bob Mosley's understated vocal makes the ballad 'It's A Beautiful Day Today' one of the great Grape tracks, Peter Lewis' stately 'I Am Not Willing' is still a stunner and 'Trucking Man' and 'Ooh Mama Ooh' show that nobody could rock a shuffle like guitarist Jerry Miller and company. Most of

was recorded as a quartet, with Skip Spence having just left the band. His parting gift, 'Seeing,' is an alternately tender and tough tab of psychedelia that prefigures his rightly touted solo album,

"Like many rock artists who trekked to Nashville in the late '60s to lay down or pick up roots, Moby Grape emerged with an LP that stripped the band back to its core strengths to make music that was simple yet effective. Produced by Bob Johnston (Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel),
Truly Fine Citizen
finds the San Francisco group, now down to a trio, keying in on songwriting and vocals. Highlights include guitarist Peter Lewis' countrified album-opener 'Changes, Circles Spinning,' his tender, almost Neil Young-ish ballad 'Now I Know High' and Jerry Miller and Skip Spence's rollicking 'Tongue-Tied.' An unpretentious -- and underrated -- album of the '60s." Includes 7 extra tracks, including live & studio recordings, 1967-1968, most of them previously unissued.
