"In late 2006, the punkest incarnation of Mount Eerie convened in Anacortes, Washington, made up of Phil Elverum (usually the entirety of Mt. Eerie, also of The Microphones), Jason Anderson (famous for his irrepressible solo shows and albums on K Records), and Kjetil Jenssen (prodigy drummer from the cult hardcore band The Spectacle from Arctic Norway!). They translated 10 or so songs of Mt. Eerie and The Microphones into a vastly heavier form in preparation for a West Coast tour of illegal art galleries and punk houses. The day before the first show, they made this recording in the former fire department garage/venue The Department of Safety. Half of the songs are never-before released, half are reinterpretations of previously-released soft songs. The key to these new versions is the addition of Kjetil Jenssen. He is a supernaturally gifted drummer from the frozen wastelands of dark northern Norway. (Elverum befriended him and his band mates during a winter stay in 2002/2003, and the exposure to their most remote, heaviest, darkest music changed the direction of Mount Eerie permanently.) When placed behind two bass drums and some oversized cymbals and drums, he has the ability to change the weather with his limbs. Combine that with the unwieldy distorted guitars and the deceptively simple songs of Mt. Eerie and you have a new kind of music: Black Wooden Ceiling Opening (kind of like black metal but made of natural materials). This 10" comes with a 21"x21" fold-out double sided poster, a white vinyl record, and a CD. It is another fancy object from P.W. Elverum & Sun, makers of the finest souvenirs."

"Song Islands Vol. II is the 2nd collection of scattered, isolated non-album tracks (get it? 'islands'?) by Phil Elverum and his Mount Eerie project, vol. 1 having been released by K records in 2002 under the Microphones name. These songs span from long ago ('Where Is My Tarp?' from 2002, recorded during the Microphones' perpetual occupation of Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia) to recent out-takes from 2009's Wind's Poem ('Lost Wisdom' and '(wind lyrics),' explorations into the mysteries of black metal) and all kinds of wildly divergent places in between. Raw poems barely accompanied on acoustic guitar, expanses of wooden percussion, distorted punk instructionals, hundreds of voices singing, an attempt at smooth jazz, the lowest note on a questionable piano in a big empty room. Many of these songs have never been released before, and the rest have only been released into ultra-obscurity on limited 7" singles and forgotten compilations, finally compiled here for the first time onto 2 white vinyl LPs (with free download!), wrapped in a heavy gatefold jacket with a 32-page booklet of details, all enfolded in a fancy letterpressed bookband."

In high summer of 2007, Phil Elverum, in the guise of Mount Eerie, found his way to Southern Studios, armed with a borrowed guitar, some notebook paper, & with little time before an evening gig, Mount Eerie & Southern's engineer Harvey Birrell recorded the six songs of Black Wooden. Black Wooden is the coming together of ideas that had travelled with Mount Eerie for months & had solidified into compositions in the days & hours before the studio session. The title itself refers acutely to the genre black metal -- perhaps less surprising a reference considering black metal often shares Mount Eerie's appreciation with low fidelity production aesthetics (among many other things), and that Phil Elverum had just been in Norway before arriving in the UK."
