Artist: MY SISTER KLAUS
Title: Chateau Rouge
Label: TIGERSUSHI (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: TSR 013CD
This is the debut full-length release from France's My Sister Klaus (aka Guillaume Teyssier), produced by Joakim. He wrote the lyrics to Poni Hoax's song "Budapest," and he sang on "Rocket Pearl," from Joakim's album, Monsters & Silly Songs. Teyssier composes his songs alone with his guitar in a small flat in the center of Paris, with boneless drafts of songs on a hot summer night. Teyssier played some of his songs for Joakim, and they recorded this album that perches right on the edge of rock, folk music and French pop. Guillaume Teyssier's musical world is full of references: The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, but there's also the swampy white soul of Al Green, psycho noisy rock like The Jesus and Mary Chain, the contemplative blues of John Fahey and the great French pop of Gainsbourg. The result is a castle, a "chateau rouge" (Chateau Rouge is actually a tough neighborhood in Paris), a construction that is about urban myths as well as dreams and escape, combining the roughness of the city and the melancholy of a young romantic.

My Sister Klaus is very French: think Serge Gainsbourg meets Jesus & Mary Chain down at the Factory, NYC. "Chateau Rouge" is all about crack heads, sugar babies, dark corners and mean gangsters. The B-side is pure psycho-punk-blues that grows and growls before it finishes up, sounding like an early Cure song.
