Title: Nucleus
Label: AXIS UK (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: AX 1006CD
Not to be confused with the British act of the same name, this Canadian quintet arose from the ashes of one of Toronto's most popular '60s bands, The Lords Of London. Their sole album originally appeared in April 1969, and features intense jamming, with plenty of swirling organ and tough guitar. When it failed to sell, they split, with three members going on to form 1970s hitmakers A Foot In Coldwater.

Title: Live In Bremen
Label: CUNEIFORM
Format: 2CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: RUNE 173/4CD
"The groundbreaking UK band Nucleus were one of the very first jazz/rock fusion groups, forming in 1969 and releasing their first album in 1970. During their lifetime, the band recorded 13 albums for labels like Vertigo and Capitol, among others. The band was founded by trumpeter Ian Carr. He recruited musicians for the band in the autumn of 1969. The timing was perfect: the world was ready for Nucleus and other early bands who were combining the energy and excitement of rock with jazz instrumentation, like Miles Davis, Tony Williams' Lifetime and Soft Machine. This never before released concert, recorded May 25th, 1971 and licensed from Radio Bremen, captures the band at an early peak and with an interesting lineup: Carr, Karl Jenkins-piano & oboe, Brian Smith-tenor & soprano sax, flute & percussion, Ray Russell-guitar, Roy Babbington-bass & John Marshall-drums. Most notably, Russell never recorded with the band, and his short tenure with Nucleus was completely unknown until now. Shortly after this recording, the original Nucleus began to unravel and three of the players (Babbington, Jenkins & Marshall) ended up in Soft Machine. This fine slice of vital, exciting, early jazz/rock."

Title: Hemispheres
Label: HUX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: HUX 078CD
2006 release. "There can be little more exciting or rewarding than listening to a band playing live and firing on all cylinders at the absolute peak of its powers, and the live performances presented here by Nucleus are no exception. They capture the group in arguably its finest incarnation right at the start of its long career, exhibiting a staggeringly high level of musical discipline matched by an equally impressive ability to improvise and solo. Nucleus began its long jazz-rock journey in 1969, when it was originally formed by trumpeter Ian Carr. They attracted a following after a successful performance at the Montreux International Festival in 1970, which led to the offer of a recording contract with Vertigo, and the release of several acclaimed albums. The performances on this CD were recorded live in Europe in 1970 & 1971 and draw on material that was to be found on the band's first two LPs, Elastic Rock & We'll Talk About It Later. At the time, Elastic Rock attracted comparisons with Miles Davis' work of the period such as In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, which incorporated rock influences, but the Nucleus album was actually recorded ahead of these works and Carr has always been keen to distance the band from these comparisons. Ultimately, Elastic Rock had elements more in common with Brit avant-garde rockers like the Soft Machine and the Pink Floyd than it did with jazz, even if rock remained the less dominant force in the band's overall approach. Nucleus are still winning new fans today. Their track 'Song for the Bearded Lady' (included here) was featured on a 3CD compilation of Vertigo acts. Mojo magazine revealed: 'the punkoid guitar gun for hire Chris Spedding and UK jazzers led by Ian Carr wig out on this piece of swing 1970 proto punk.' The accompanying full-color 12-page CD booklet includes rare group photographs and extensive liner notes, including interviews with the band members."

Label: MAINSTREAM
Format: LP
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: MAIN S/6120CLP
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1969. This is the limited edition colored vinyl version. Not to be confused w/the UK jazz/rock group of the same name. "Canada's Greg Fitzpatrick, Sebastian Agnello, Danny Taylor, Hughie Leggat, and John Richardson were teenagers in The Lords Of London, who played to their peers on weekends. They released several singles in the mid-'60s, scoring a Canadian hit with 'Cornflakes And Ice Cream.' However, it failed to ignite the attention of Americans and the group began a slow evolution into progressive sounds and a new name -- Nucleus. Through day-long rehearsals they would jam extended progressive rock treatments, many of which would be recorded in 1968; Bob Horne replaced Agnello on keyboards as the band headed into the studio for their first and only LP written entirely by Greg Fitzpatrick. However, it took a year to get interest for the record, which was released by Chicago label Mainstream, and by the time it was released in 1969, the band had distanced themselves from it. And yet, the album became a cult favorite throughout the North American Eastern seaboard, and its first single, 'Communication,' was played fervently despite its excessive length." --Jam! Music
