Title: Sweet Honey Bee
Label: BLUE NOTE
Format: LP
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: BLP 4252LP
Exact repro reissue; originally issued on Blue Note in 1966. "Fortunately for music, as for all other manifestations of life, it has so far been impossible to homogenize temperament. Even, for example, in a time of unusual tension, such as the present, there are those who somehow sustain an open, lyrical, non-competitive approach to being alive. Although Duke's music has always been airy and spring-like, perhaps a particular reason for the sense of well-being in this album is the attractive young lady on the cover who, by the time you hear the music, will have become Mrs. Betty Pearson. There was something of her in Duke's thoughts when he wrote Sweet Honey Bee. Its sunny melody and resiliently infectious beat do communicate, as Duke puts it, 'a bit of happiness.' Considerably more than a bit. There is a dance-like buoyancy in Duke's own piano solo, and James Spaulding's flute also emphasizes the light-hearted mood of expectancy that makes Sweet Honey Bee a spirit-energizer." -- Nat Hentoff

Title: Wahoo!
Label: HEAVENLY SWEETNESS (FRANCE)
Format: LP
Price: $31.00
Catalog #: HS 023LP
Vinyl-only release. Part of the Blue Note reissue series from the Heavenly Sweetness label, Wahoo! is an album by hard-bop pianist Duke Pearson, originally released in 1964, which includes musicians Donald Byrd (trumpet), James Spaulding (alto sax, flute), Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Duke Pearson (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass), and Mickey Roker (drums). "...one of his hippest sessions of the '60s, a lyrical batch of soul jazz tracks, with that slight edge of darkness that he was putting into his best work as the decade progressed! The overall feel is perhaps a bit like some of those Byrd sessions that were heavily influenced by Pearson, but also with a bit of the later expansive style of writing for horns that you'd find on albums like Prarie Dog or The Phantom. Titles include 'ESP,' 'Fly Little Bird Fly,' 'Farewell Machelle,' 'Bedouin,' and 'Amanda.'" --Dusty Groove; Pressed on super-heavy 180 gram vinyl in a high quality "jazz" sleeve.

Title: The Phantom
Label: WATER
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: WATER 133CD
Reissue, originally released by Blue Note in 1969. "The Phantom finds Pearson writing an ambitious set of post-bop that expands the boundaries of the music with Latin percussion and complex harmonies derived from the avant garde. His supporting band is fairly large, featuring Jerry Dodgion (flute), Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), Sam Brown (guitar), Al Gafa (guitar), Bob Cranshaw (bass), Mickey Roker (drums), Patato Valdez (conga) and Victor Pantajo (conga), but they're agile, bringing a spark and energy to the complex arrangements."
