Title:
Rinse: 06
Label:
RINSE (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
RINSE 008CD
This is the sixth installment in the Rinse label's compilation series featuring exclusive and unreleased tracks mixed by
Plastician
. Plastician has been a prominent DJ on Rinse FM since 2003. He hosted BBC Radio 1's first radio show dedicated to dubstep and grime before returning to Rinse FM in 2007.
Chris Reed
(aka Plastician) was first introduced to a wide audience when, alongside
Kode9
and
Digital Mystikz
, Rephlex Records signed Plastician productions for their acclaimed compilations
Grime 1
and
Grime 2
. He has produced and remixed artists such as
MIA
,
Alter Ego
,
Kosheen
,
Skepta
,
JME
, and
Black Ghosts
. Plastician's breakthrough as a DJ came when he released his cut "Venom" under the name
Plastic Man
on former Rinse resident and grime pioneer
Slimzee
's label, Slimzos Recordings. This brought Plastician up on the Rinse FM radar, where
Geeneus
gave him a few guest slots which led to a permanent slot hosting an instrumental grime show. He's since gone on to play on every continent except Antarctica and can lay claim to being the first DJ booked to play dubstep in Africa. As for the mix itself, he says:
"I wanted it to be personal -- I think this mix represents what I'm all about. It evolves throughout with different paces and peaking points... I balanced it out with some grime instrumentals, dubstep bangers, some blissed-out synthy numbers, some more chilled out stuff and even chucked in a live a capella mix for good measure!"

Dubstep Allstars Vol. 10
Label:
TEMPA (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.50
Catalog #:
TEMPA 021CD
Given that Tempa have now reached the landmark tenth edition in their scene-defining
Dubstep Allstars
series, it makes perfect sense that they've invited
Plastician
, one of the genre's pioneers, to contribute. Near the start of last decade Plastician, alongside the likes of
Skream
,
Benga
, and
Artwork
, was among the small group of producers twisting garage into dark and skeletal shapes, creating what would eventually be called dubstep. So it makes sense that, in keeping with his own past, Plastician's
Dubstep Allstars Vol. 10
flirts with the rawer and rougher sides of dubstep: synths roar like police sirens, sub-bass scorches everything it touches, and percussion is taut and driven by flurries of conga hits. MCs --
Doctor
,
Merky Ace
,
Newham Generals
'
Footsie
-- lend a languid flow to wrenching beats by
J:Kenzo
and
Cato
, drawing connections to Plastician's equally strong roots in grime. But there's a defined narrative arc to
Dubstep Allstars Vol. 10
, too, in the way it blossoms from a brisk and percussive opening section into a roaring and ravey middle, before gradually drifting away into a meditative and melody-soaked final third. It all draws together into a mix that's equal parts dread, aggression and immersion. Other artists include:
Nomine
,
Jaydrop
,
Vicious Circle
,
FNC
,
Commodo
,
LAXX & Walsh
,
Kumarachi
,
Megalodon & Badklaat
,
Mutated Mindz
,
Stinkahbell
,
Dream
and
Korea

Beg To Differ

TERRORHYTHM (UK)

CD
Price:
$21.00

"
Beg To Differ
is the debut artist album from grime and dubstep pioneer Plastician. The opening track and lead single from the album, 'Intensive Snare,' features self proclaimed 'King of Grime' and long time friend Skepta. The track is an ode to seminal dubstep night FWD>> and via sets from Boy Better Know, BBC Radio 1's Mary Anne Hobbs and Plastician's own DJ sets is now a firm club favorite, indeed it was demanded by members of Dubstep Forum that the track be released as a single. The video is currently on YouTube and soon to be serviced to MTV, Kiss and Channel U. With a running time of only 45 minutes,
Beg To Differ
is a carefully-programmed and complete listening experience, an example of the variety within grime at its best. Tracks like 'Japan' and 'Walk In The Carpark' are beautiful, fragile and introspective, while 'Badboy Sound' and 'Real Things' are intense and unrelenting aural assaults, the latter employing Skepta and Frisco of Boy Better Know on vocal duties, alongside Temz, Chronik and Esco of notorious grime favorites Slew Dem. By calling the album
Beg To Differ
, Chris 'Plastician' Reed challenges any doubters of grime that believed the sound could only thrive within London, and he should know; the first DJ to be booked to play grime and dubstep in Japan, Africa and North America, Plastician's unique sound has been recognized by music lovers and industry heads across a number of genres. His wide appeal and ear for dancefloor movers has seen him commissioned for remixes of MIA (XL), Alter Ego (Skint) Kosheen (Moshka) and Black Ghosts (Southern Fried). After holding down a monthly dubstep and grime slot on BBC Radio1, Plastician has since returned to the critically-acclaimed Rinse FM, where he continues to showcase the best in grime and dubstep, including his own productions."
