FIRM 013EP
"Trustfully Popnoname laid his debut record in our hands and that now comes out as an open secret on Firm. His authentic way of music production in conjunction with his distinctive understanding for transfer of energy does really suit our plans. The softer side of Popnoname is also reflected on this record, but the lasting impression is that of a loud, dirty, playful and energetic techno record. Popnoname lives in Cologne, makes electronic music since years and looks good while doing that. Incl. Schaeben & Voss remix."

FIRM 018EP
"Five years ago Firm artist Popnoname moved from the pretty German island Fehmarn to Cologne to make his music thing. He has produced music for several films and theater plays and comes out with his charmy but also sometimes rough rocking electronic beats on Firm for the second time. His always changing live-show with computer, guitar and microphone he already did in clubs across Europe is a big enrichment for the line-up of Firm. In January 2006, he founded the band Popnoname."

ITALIC 056EP
"The house that Jack Kerouac built! Popnoname is the project of 27-year-old Jens-Uwe Beyer from Cologne. Known for his earlier releases on Kompakt and Firm, he is now celebrating his debut on Italic with a techno 12" maxi release. Popnoname's productions vary between traditional Cologne techno ('On the Run'), Border Community ('On the Run'), Sound Signature aesthetics in style of Howard Thomas or Isolee ('Ferry Sponge') and the Cologne definition of singer/songwriter techno referring to The Bionaut ('Wonder You'). Popnoname is part of a group of young techno producers and DJs that can be considered as Cologne's 'beat generation' of techno music. Apart from Popnoname, there is also Skua Lovelle, Ansorge and the photo/art magazine 'Public Folder' edited by John Harten. What they all have in common is their interest in literature, photography, art, theatre and music resulting in a redefinition of Cologne techno in a broader sense. Highly recommended for all fans of lush, ravishingly beautiful techno."

ITALIC 062EP
"This lovely gent from Cologne returns to Italic -- we all know and love his Firm releases not to mention his
Pop Ambient
contributions. With
Credits
, Popnoname takes the classic approach to Cologne techno, embracing the aspects of pop and techno wholeheartedly with 'Romance' and 'Addicted To Night' -- both tracks hold together well with their excellent melodies mingling with punch-drunk bass. 'Pointe' leans this EP to the old ambient ways with a blissful pop serenity."

ITALIC 064EP
"Since the premiere at Paris-based nightclub Le Pulp, Popnoname always starts his live set with 'No Doubt,' the A-side song on his new 12" EP
London, Paris, New York
. 'No Doubt' (A1) starts rather laid back. A cozy house beat and awesome harmonies are gradually intensifying until the middle section of the track. Then, with a two-third beats pad, the song turns into a primetime rush in technicolor. 'Pearl' (B1) is also coolly produced: with a solid bass drum and live recordings of his bass guitar, this is the ultimate soundtrack for pop campaigns such as 'Save The Bass Drum' and 'We Are From Cologne, And We Love It.' But whenever you close your eyes at the club, you might as well imagine dancing in the deep forest -- or in the great outdoors. 'Jasminstrauch' (B2) is a soft, slow, sweet-smelling song. 110 BPM and that's it. All three tracks on this EP are as different as the six cities featured on the cover. A perfect match, to die for."

ITALIC 067CD
"Popnoname is 28-year-old artist and musician Jens-Uwe Beyer. Five years ago, he moved from the little German island of Fehmarn to Cologne, began composing scores for theatre and film and started his career by producing electronic club music. Over the last couple of years, Popnoname has regularly contributed to Kompakt's
Pop Ambient
series, has also released five singles on Cologne-based labels Firm and Italic and is now considered to be one of the most glamorous artist in Cologne's new music scene. Popnoname skillfully combines pop song and Cologne minimalism. The result is a new sublimeness and a new version of techno that goes far beyond the usual functionality of club music. Even more remarkable is his attitude towards musical boundaries: Popnoname confronts any musical context and genres of the last decade with a radical individualism he has lived out both as an artist and musician on labels such as Firm and Italic. Yet despite their four-to-the-floor straightness and groove, all the instrumental tracks of this album are abstract images of both beat and melody. 'Tremolo' is a deep techno track, partly at halftime speed, sophisticated, but at the same time great for the club. 'Still' is a summery indie-house track with a live recording of a bass guitar and very British pop vocals. It is cosy and soft and another proof for Popnoname's subtle way of dealing with sounds. Simply great, but seldom achieved! 'Light' is about movement. Its synth hookline and vocals remind of old new wave tracks. ;Ferry Sponge' lives on classic harmonies and is the perfect background music for the club. The unusual way he is changing the beat from 119 bpm to 123 bpm results in a transcendental, abstract and deep house feeling. 'Human One' starts with a smooth beat and constantly repeating strings until the vocals turn the track into something that can be called 'ghostly.' 'Kapital' is an ambient techno track with a beat line and reminds of Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project. 'Jasminstrauch' is a soft, slow, sweet smelling song. 110 bpm and that's it. 'Mother Earth,' probably the album's most serious track, has loads of white soul and almost reminds of a gospel song. With 'Taken,' the album ends in good old Cologne style: a movie soundtrack-like ambient track and an elegant finale for this album. Popnoname says pop rave! Now."

ITALIC 080CD
"Within the electronic music scene, Jens-Uwe Beyer's new album
Surrounded By Weather
is considered a flamboyant sound experience. It is an impressive combination of traditional instruments, song structures and Techno tools. Reference points may be located between House-not-House, Avant-Pop and a new feeling for Krautrock or Glam Pop - once created by La Düsseldorf - with tendency toward experimental, rather improvised compositions on the one side, and extended, instrumental and monotonous dance-floor tracks on the other side. A very personal touch is added by using his own, pure and non-processed voice or vocals thus creating, supporting, accompanying and representing the different moods of the album. Jens-Uwe Beyer started working on this new album immediately after his debut album
White Album
in 2007. First, he created rough demo versions which he later refined and elaborated in the legendary former EMI studio in Cologne. The album starts with the track '2012' and wonderful vocal harmonies à la Beach Boys or Rufus Wainwright - and later turns into a deep dancefloor track with a cosy house beat and deep, disharmonic strings. The track 'Touch' is the first single release taken from the album (incl. remixes made by The Field and Tennishero) and represents probably the most intense tendency toward pop music with its soft guitar sounds, a laid-back beat and a vocal hook line. The kick drum sound of 'ID Card' refers to almost 10 years of Cologne Techno history. Its 4-to-the-floor rhythm structure is delicately embraced by an airy pop arrangement and vocals. The movement starts like an ambient track, spiced here and there with guitar sounds and bass sequences until the beat slowly starts to support the track's dramaturgy. The radical 'Crack' is one of the core parts of the album with its monotonous stroboscope-like sounds and hard, ecstatic dancefloor compatibility. 'Perspective' in contrast belongs to the more Krautrock-ish, improvised tracks and reminds of a morning walk through the wet, German forest. 'The Smallest Part' offers elegiac and transcendental moments: Everything the eye cannot see and the ear cannot hear can be found in this track. 'Love' is soft and easy, personal and lofty. The album ends with 'Storm' and its open identity. Maybe
Surrounded By Weather
is the perfect combination of 70s Kraut- Glam and 90s Techno feeling and will make both shining bright again! Yet in a NEW way!"

ITALIC 081EP
"The first remix 12" single from Popnoname's new album
Surrounded By Weather
, featuring mixes by The Field, Tennishero and Picious. The 'Touch' remix by Stockholm's Aksel Willner aka The Field takes you on an intense, atmospheric journey to a Balearic planet in a far-off solar system. This is a journey headed directly into the light -- this remix will make waves. Also from Sweden are the duo Tennishero from Goetheburg. To the 'Touch,' original they add hot old-school drums and even hotter smooth chords which work with the dreamy guitar to create astonishing effects, making the track into an exciting house edit in slow motion disco. Game, set and match to Tennishero. Chris Demertzis aka Picious is a DJ and producer from Greece. He runs the 'Liebe Club' in Thessaloniki and welcomes such illustrious guests as Prins Thomas, The Modernist, Kevin Saunderson and Michael Mayer. His remix of 'Storm' comes on housey with a mellow dub influence and has all the elegance of an ancient Greek marble statue on the dancefloor of the 'Continental Baths.' Stormy weather indeed."

KOM POP016EP
Following a string of contributions for Kompakt's
Pop Ambient
series,
Jens-Uwe Beyer
aka
Popnoname
joins the Kompakt Pop stable with a remarkable tune. "Hello Gorgeous" combines the classic Kompakt sound with the
Pet Shop Boys
, sounding like it was produced where rave and indie meet on the dancefloor, harmoniously carried by Beyer's powerful vocals. Popnoname provides an upbeat "Le Klub" remix, tightening the techno up a notch or 5, and
Terranova
's remix turns it into a cracking jack-house number.

Spaces
Label:
POP! RECORDS (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
POP 002EP
"Brut! Records baby sister label, POP!, sees its second release with Popnoname's
Spaces
. An eclectic line-up -- including Joerg Burger, Freund der Familie and Paid for Fame -- remix the original three times over, offering varied perspectives of the same brave track. Revving its engine, 'Spaces' drives you to experience things: it invites you to crack yourself open so that some new future might pour through that voluntary rift. Bold and beautiful and formless, it emerges: a baby nebula, cradled in the spiral arms of a distant galaxy, patiently building mass as it clumps gas and dust together." On clear vinyl.
