This release by Pupkulies & Rebecca distinguishes itself by a refreshing otherness. Light and easy piano as well as the lascivious French voice of singer Rebecca dominate the atmosphere, while its minimal electronic groove discreetly remains in the background. A tropical feeling evolves in the long version of this track when playful synthesizer chords give rise to a steel drum. In his remix, Mollono.Bass manages to combine the very song-oriented approach of the original with a bouncy electronic arrangement.

This is the debut release from Cape Verdean Janosch Blaul and his partner Rebecca. Blaul, who is one half of the minimal house duo Strassmann, has always been restlessly devoted to creating music whose airiness, warmth and melancholy goes straight to the heart -- whose sounds move even those who haven't had much access to electronic music. Rebecca celebrates a terrific debut singing on six tracks, imparting a distinctive flavor to the album. Although the Würzburg couple who now choose to live in Dresden have been together for a while now, the idea of playing music together came only very recently and by coincidence. Their working methods are reminiscent of the Jamaican dub tradition. Rebecca sings alone and adrift, irregardless of Janosch's riddims which only require minute adjustments before completion. Their sound is very similar to the aesthetics of Strassmann -- speaking the same, elegant, tight language. The swing seeps through and radiates a nonchalance and deep warmth which is missed the moment the CD has finished playing.

This is the second full-length release for the Berlin-based duo, Pupkulies & Rebecca, (Janosch Blaul and Rebecca Gropp). Last year's highly-acclaimed debut The Way We, was a successful experiment, but the successor Beyond The Cage is the big hit, reminding of classic singer/songwriter albums like you've always wanted them. Diverse, multilayered and pure, free from cheap showmanship, always relying on itself. Electronically pulsating chansons, pervaded by warmth, melancholy and lightness, allow Rebecca to fully display her intense and soulful voice. Janosch Blaul has already expressed his love of minimal house as part of the duo, Strassmann, and this release still displays hints of minimal mixed with soul. On a few tracks, Sepp Singwald, a bass player from Berlin and lover of old Rhodes and Wurlitzer e-pianos, supported the duo. Pupkulies & Rebecca have truly found their language and you're going to hear more from them in the future.

This is the third full-length release by Janosch Blaul (aka Pupkulies) and his partner Rebecca Gropp. On Burning Boats, electronic music meets chanson, the straight bass drum reconciles with the acoustic guitar, and minimal house mates with pure songwriting. While the scaffolding for this recording is predominantly electronic, the acoustic sections make a strong appearance, fleshing out the structure and adding warmth and depth. They abstain from unnecessary ornaments and rather, put the existing elements in the right place. By this, space for soul is created -- and the soul makes use of it, unfurling in their songs, making them something really special and personal. Guest musician Sepp Singwald once again makes an appearance, playing contrabass on some songs as well as SH 101 and piano. Rebecca's voice makes this perfect sound into something huge and complete. Rarely has there been so much vocal on a dance album and rarely has the music been so rich in detail. Pupkulies & Rebecca enchant with urban, danceable, electronic folk that works at fashion shows, jazz festivals, or at home equally well.

This is the long-awaited fourth album from Pupkulies & Rebecca. During the past years, they have gained momentum with countless concerts in renowned clubs throughout Europe. A certain hype has arisen around the band occurring totally organically without being triggered by the press -- self-generating and in real-time. Pupkulies & Rebecca have an appeal which covers all age groups, territories and scenes. Looking For The Sea is undoubtedly Pupkulies & Rebecca's most matured recording to date. The album was recorded mainly in the south of France and the ingredients and recipes are the same as on their previous albums. The main thread is house, not in the traditional American sense but in a more European version. Not Chicago but Paris and Berlin will be heard. "Eurovision" in the true context without the contest. The songs are sung in English and French, sort of more chansons than tracks. There is no coolness and functionality to be found here; instead, there is warmth and unbridled joy for music. High-hats out of rustling leaves, old synth legends, an organetta from the flea market -- each sound is chosen carefully, so that it has room to breathe and becomes a part of the greater whole. Looking For The Sea is a multifaceted, varied and fascinating album which is easy for one to hear and immediately understand. Influences of different styles can be heard and a childish openness is apparent. Pupkulies & Rebecca show how beauteous pop music can be. According to their name, they are a duo -- but in reality they are a trio. Sepp Singwald, an all-rounder from the Berlin indie scene, has been a band member for years. An increase in the acoustic elements is witness to his influence. Various keyboard and string instruments contributed by Sepp haven't changed the direction of the songs but support them in exactly the right spot. Janosch Blaul is still the man in control and his contribution is decisive. Together with Sepp Singwald, he has created a finely-woven tapestry of sounds full of colorful patterns, perfectly tailored for Rebecca's voice. Her vocals cause the tapestry to float, light and weightless.
