"It's almost 4 years to the day that Jeff Samuel's Throatwobbler Mangrove EP was released on Karloff #03, and even today the four world hits of the record are getting digged out by DJs, when the minimalism needs to either groove or jack again. So now with Return Of The Throatwobbler there's finally an appropriate follow-up by the man from Seattle, erm, Berlin, after he's impressively run riot in the meantime on labels like Spectral, Trapez, Poker Flat, Frankie and Logistic. The A-side 'Terso' is shuffling and twirling and bouncing in such a winsome way that not many can master like Jeff Samuel. Almost like an electric ray -- left and right and left, and without letting any tempting gimmicks take the mind off the straight path. Appropriately enough, 'The Spook' on the B-side comes along a bit more spookily, with a bass line twisting into the brain, ripped up by miniatures of bleeps and chords just at the right moments, and thus leading the track to an agile, exhilarating climax."

Jeff Samuel has been constantly building his profile as a DJ, producer and remixer over the last few years and released his debut album on Trapez in 2006. Fire is a great, snappy and propellent tune with some squeaking synths and a stomping beat. The first remix is by Claude VonStroke, who adds more dirt and distortion, while St. Sebastian focuses on squeaky tunes and rebuilds the track with a messy break in the middle. An awesome package that will set the dancefloors on fire.

Trapez is happy to present Jeff Samuel's long-awaited first artist album entitled Step. After seven years of making music, "the 8-bit Tetris wizard" Jeff Samuel has produced a true classic LP, with tracks that rock the floor as well as tracks that are deep and melodic, sometimes even epic. The album has a strong songwriting link, although the music is still stripped down and jacking. Step was created during the spring of 2006, and Samuel continues in the melodic direction of his most recent releases on Trapez and Trapez Ltd, Bork and Endpoint. These tracks were conceived as part of a dancefloor album, but the extra steps and melodic sophistication makes especially the CD version (containing extra tracks) one which can be listened to in sequence. The title itself has many meanings: at its core, a step is an object to get from one level to another. We can see that Jeff has accomplished this on the closing track of the CD "I Think They Are Trying To Say Something," which uses a melody that evolves over the course of nine minutes, never repeating itself. His production elements have also been stepped up, including the use of strings on some tracks and even a short journey into broken beats on "Month 2 Month," both an ode to Detroit and to the struggle of living in the USA as a techno artist. Jeff's recent DJ sets have already been setting dance floors ablaze with album tracks like "Off The Mark" and "You Will Never Know," both featuring Samuel's trademark basslines and almost song-like hooks. With Step, Samuel consciously wanted to take his melodies as far as he could. While they have always been present in early works such as "Double Yum," "Knob" and "Fcote," they were never as outward and naked as on this LP. Could this album be his final statement in this direction? Maybe we will find out in another seven years.

"I Think They Are Trying To Say Something" was not released on Jeff Samuel's Step LP, but as it gained a great reputation in Jeff Samuel's DJ sets, Trapez now releases it in a specially-mastered vinyl version. This epic track with its large amount of delays and effects creates a magic, smooth and gentle feeling. This is very unique and shows Jeff's ambition to extend the genre of minimal techno, to one with more emotion and soul. As Geoff Robert says of the track, "'I Think They Are Trying To Say Something' is an evocative bit of tech-house combining ethereal pads and some brilliant use of flange & delay ... Trapez is proud to present the re-release of Jeff Samuel's deleted minimal classic, "Lost." The track was originally produced in 2000 and released in 2001 by mysterious NYC label Remains with no artist or title information. Discovered years later, the record became a secret weapon of Hawtin, Villalobos, Daniel Bell, Sammy Dee, Jeff Milligan and many more. Created with only 6 samples and 1 directX reverb effect, "Lost" is a blueprint not only for the current minimal techno sound, but for "in the box" techno produced entirely via computer. Produced in the days before VSTI's and Ableton Live, this re-release reconfirms Samuel's place as a pioneer of software-based dance music production.
