"A 10" single by legendary '60s band Screw. Screw were a psychedelic blues quintet from south London whose chief claim to fame was their support spot at The Rolling Stones Hyde Park concert in July 1969. It was subsequently written up in Richard Neville's
Play Power
book. The group released no records during their brief heyday (1967-'70) but Shagrat has unearthed its only two extant recordings 'Banks of the River' b/w 'Devil's Hour' recorded in May 1969 under the supervision of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. With nods towards Captain Beefheart, The Misunderstood and Free, the band featured Chris Turner (harmonica), Al Kinnear (guitar), Nick Brotherwood (drums), Stan Scrivener (bass) and Pete Hossell (vocals), and they played many gigs at the time including The Roundhouse, Eel Pie Island and The London Guildhall. The 10" comes in an intricate package all designed by Savage Pencil and includes a special fold over inner sleeve (featuring photos of their Hyde Park appearance and an extensive history of the band written by Shagrat boss Nigel Cross) plus a bonus CD of 'Psychedelic Harps,' a lengthy, exciting blues harmonica duel between Chris Turner and Pete Hossell."
