Outmost
Label:
ABUCS (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.50
Catalog #:
ABUCS 004EP
"Limited white label. For the fourth 12" of Hotflush's offshoot imprint Abucs we have two new tracks from none other than Scuba himself. He once again challenges the boundaries of dubstep, starting with 'Outmost,' a 4/4 production that borders on crossing into the techno sphere. 'Beta' on the flipside maintains the mood with dazzling warm synths across a half-step structure."

Bleach/Volt
Label:
ABUCS (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
ABUCS 005EP
"Hotflush presents the next release on the mysterious Abucs side-label, with two explorative tracks from label head Scuba himself. On the A side is 'Bleach,' originally released on the
Round Black Ghosts 2
CD compilation from Scape Records (SCAPE57CD), but never before on vinyl. On the flip is 'Volt,' a mean stepper that moves the dancefloor in the way that only Scuba can. Scuba (Paul Rose) is based in Berlin after relocating from London in 2007. He is now running the immensely successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary club Berghain, providing fertile ground for the finest creative developments of the techno/dubstep cross-pollinations of late."

Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
ABUCS 007EP
"Scuba continues his stream of underground techno influenced releases with a release on his mysterious vinyl only label Abucs. As ever there's a smooth and deep atmosphere going on here and a distinctly '80s vibe on this occasion, very reminiscent of the type of sound dBridge's Nonplus label. On the flip Ramadanman (Hessle Audio, Hemlock Recordings, Swamp81) steps up to remix Scuba's 'Tense', the mechanical and robotic drum pattern overlaid with Scuba's trademark Detroit synths to create an image of an Industrialised Berlin landscape."

A Mutual Antipathy
Label:
HOTFLUSH RECORDINGS (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
HF 002CD
2008 release, now repressed. "Decamping to Germany has had a profound affect on Paul Rose aka Scuba. Still running the prolific Hotflush and Scuba labels from his Berlin home with a little help from stateside Alex Incyde and a truly legendary international roster, this north London original has taken his imprint and sound undeniably global. Yet, whilst he has yet to adopt lederhosen and start making Euro trance, the techno/minimal core of the city has clearly opened up new possibilities for him. I could throw around more wild conjecture, but I bet being so far away from the London scene has probably allowed him to start confidently exploring new pockets of sound and structure. This long player, (in every sense -- the track segue continuously together) is an opulent, yet serious digression from any standard dubstep template, and all the more brilliant for it. The expansion of classic Scuba industrial crunch and groove, means his soundscapes have moved, with great fluidity, into further areas of electronica and techno embellishments, allows the beat to shift tempos and morph patterns, creating an album that ebbs and flows seductively drawing the listener into its magnetic power. Complete and assured,
A Mutual Antipathy
is dubstep alternative; the perfect balance between Burial's rusty emo-garage and Benga's full throttle techno."

HOTFLUSH RECORDINGS (UK)
Format:
2CD
Price:
$16.50
Catalog #:
HF 003LTD-CD
Hotflush presents a 2CD package of
Scuba
's acclaimed
Triangulation
album, plus a CD of all-new artist remixes. Scuba aka
Paul Rose
has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought color and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene. Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including
Distance
,
Vex'd
and more recently
Mount Kimbie
and
Joy Orbison
, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin's techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix (OSTGUT 011CD). Following the first Scuba LP,
A Mutual Antipathy
(2008) which was remixed by
Marcel Dettman
,
Martyn
and
Surgeon
,
Triangulation
(2010) took the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But
Triangulation
moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n' bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive. For
Triangulation (Interpretations)
, new allure is breathed into Scuba's originals. The listless beauty of "Before" is imbued with a spine-tingling warmth on Scuba's luscious opening re-edit, "Before (After)." A remix of "Latch" by
Will Saul
and
Mike Monday
, infuses the dubbed-out original with a dose of bumping house flavor. America's totem of bass
Faulty DL
takes leave from the original "On Deck" with a low, burring bass line and elegantly woven melodies drawn warmly across the whole. Scuba's back with the old skool vibes on "You Got Me (I Got You)" but confidently skips the line by keeping it firmly in this moment.
Deadbeat
's remix of "Tracers" sees him in classic form, delivering a deep 7am techno heavy-hitter.
Joe
's rework of "So You Think You're Special" has a slowly blossoming groove underpinning stuttering percussion, jangling keys and an expertly playful melody that opens out across the sparse background. Finally, South London's
Deadboy
offers an understated modern jungle remix of "Before" with skittering hats and heavy bass that can't fail to light up floors and faces.

Twista
Label:
HOTFLUSH RECORDINGS (UK)
Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HF 013EP
"After three outings on the Scuba sub-label, which ranged from crunching electro-dubstep to the fluttering emotive soundscapes of the most recent 12", Scuba finally touches down on the main label. With a distinctive sound recognised as one of the big hitters in dubstep, these two tracks push the envelope further for Hotflush and Scuba. 'Twista' tore the roof off the legendary DMZ first birthday party in March, with crunching live guitars colliding with a reggae off-beat and enormous sub bass. This was a Hatcha exclusive before the likes of Joe Nice, Distance and Mark One got on the case. Plate picks up the techno/electro baton from the last Scuba 12", mixing up chasmic reverb drums, swooping synths and the trademark Scuba sub."

Hard Boiled/Tell Her
Label:
HOTFLUSH RECORDINGS (UK)
Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HF 020EP
2008 release. "Hotflush Recordings' 20th release presents two tracks from Scuba's debut album,
A Mutual Antipathy
. 'Hard Boiled' is a cavernous, spaced-out, minimalist excursion, chewing up and spitting out the Berlin-influenced techno-centric slant on dubstep that has established itself in recent months. 'Tell Her' touches on the classic Scuba contrast of twisted percussion and floating melodies, glacial strings and deepest sub, but with a result that seems completely detached from anything to previously emerge from dubstep's melting pot of ideas and sounds. Enthusiastically received by Mary Anne Hobbs on Radio 1, and firmly in the boxes of Tayo, Laurent Garnier, and all the usual dubstep suspects, this innovative 12" is just a taste of what promises to be one of the most forward-thinking dubstep releases of the year."

Format:

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HF 022EP
"The first full 12" from Scuba since the release of his debut album
A Mutual Antipathy
touches down on Hotflush with two killer tracks illustrating the development of the Scuba sound. The dubstep/techno amalgamation has continued to gather pace in recent months and the A side of HF022, 'Klinik,' encapsulates this collision of genres perfectly. Rolling beats, syncopated variations, crushing sub and cavernous synths collide in what has been a staple of Scuba's acclaimed DJ sets recently. The AA side lowers the bpm to a tempo only heard from Scuba on his SCB edit of 'Hard Boiled' which surfaced in 2008 with Marcel Dettmann's remix of 'From Within.' Taking the theme deeper into distorted static than that track, 'Hundreds and Thousands' pushes the boundaries of the Scuba sound into uncharted territory."

12" (HF022). Over the five tracks, Scuba covers the full spectrum of his sound, developing the house and techno influenced dubstep that has been such a feature of 2009 and wading into new territory with 'Symbiosis,' a half-time 170bpm excursion that has been supported by DBridge and Instra:mental on their seminal Autonomic podcast."

"The defining feature of bass music in 2008 has been the expansion of the dubstep sound across disparate genres. Scuba's debut long player,
A Mutual Antipathy
exemplified this phenomenon, mixing dubstep's bass rumble with the eccentricities of dub, techno and electronica into a sprawling cinematic landscape. To complete the project, six tracks from the album have now been remixed by producers of a similar disposition, adding their interpretations of Scuba's vision. The remixes will be released in quick succession across three 12"s. The remixers: 'Ruptured (Surgeon Remix)': Since exploding onto the scene in 1995, Surgeon has been one of the most consistently original techno artists, with groundbreaking releases on Tresor and Dynamic Tension, among others. Poppies (Substance Dub Version): Part of the Scion duo, Substance (aka DJ Pete) is a legend of Berlin techno, whose past releases include the Basic Channel

"You haven't worked in weeks. You're unshaven and unkempt, your fridge is as bare as the dying light of a Sunday afternoon spent alone is bleak. Your rent is in arrears, and you dread the thought of more bills arriving through the door tomorrow. You spend more money on whiskey and weed than you spend on food, and have recently taken to shoplifting cheese from the supermarket. Barefoot, in your underwear still, you walk over to your record player, still faithfully spinning around and around and around since God knows what time this morning when the last people left. You reach for the record you walked into town to buy, pull it from its sleeve, still fresh despite a gathering storm of your greasy fingerprints clouding it like uncertainty clouds your future. For five and a half minutes you stand listening, eyes closed, and your troubles fall away. You flip the record over and, for a further five and a half minutes of pure joy, you hear that which few others ever will. THE FUTURE IS NAKED. DJ support from: Martyn, Scuba, 2562, TRG, Breakage, Brendon Moeller, Floating Points, Mary Anne Hobbs & Instra:mental."

OSTGUT 011CD
SUB:STANCE is the collision of two worlds -- the vitality of UK bass music intertwined with Berghain and all its sensory exhilaration and unique atmosphere. The party started in July 2008 when an array of dubstep's finest exponents first brought the world's most exciting sound to its most talked-about club. Since then, the concept has become fully formed with curators
Paul Rose
(aka
Scuba
) and
Paul Fowler
(Spymania Records) picking line-ups covering the full spectrum of the burgeoning bass music scene. Scuba, originally from London, has been at the forefront of the new popularity of this music in Berlin and his DJ sets at each of the parties have provided some of the highlights of the series to date. He was therefore an obvious choice for this mix, which across 24 tracks paints a sonic picture of his musical self and that of SUB:STANCE. Including many tracks from artists who have played the party themselves, including
Shackleton
,
Ramadanman
and
Mala
, amongst others, the mix takes in all the sonic influences and stylistic techniques that have made Scuba sets at SUB:STANCE special. From the laidback cool of
Pangaea
, through
Surgeon
's barely-controlled aggression, to Mala's deep meditation, the mix is a true representation of what these parties mean. The mix also features 4 previously-unheard tracks from Scuba himself as well as many more exclusive tracks and edits. Other artists include:
Sigha
,
Airhead
,
Joy Orbison
,
Shortstuff

Timba/Sleepa
Label:
SCUBA (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
SCUBA 001EP
"Hotflush presents the first in a series of releases by Scuba, a producer making a big impression on the underground sound of dubstep. First played by Rinse FM stalwart, Forward>> resident and discoverer of Digital Mystikz, DJ Hatcha, these tracks have become some of the most talked about, and sought after, on Internet forums, dancefloors and pirate radio in recent months. Taking a much more minimal style than recent Hotflush releases, justifiably Scuba concentrates on awesome bass in a true dub-centric style. 'Timba' lays down a challenge to any soundsystem: can you cope with the bass? A twisting synth line and distorted stabs draw you into the drop, which resembles a sharp but righteous kick to the head. 'Sleepa' goes deeper, with a riff that slithers out of your speakers with soca-esque drums in hot pursuit, smashing into a floor-wrecking groove with bass."

Thank U
Label:
SCUBA (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
SCUBA 002EP
"The second Scuba 12" has landed, carrying on the work laid down on the first. Scuba has become one of the hottest artists on the dubstep circuit, and now that many of the biggest MCs from the grime world are getting in on the act, these two tracks have been receiving constant reload calls at Forward and DMZ for the past few months. 'Thank U' continues where 'Timba,' from the first 12", left off. A massive sub-sledgehammer snare and a speaker-shattering halfstep break that seems to hark back the early days of hardcore. Innovative stuff from Scuba. Words develops the sub-bass theme, with an even more assaulting snare and a haunting synth line that ensures the classic dubstep depth."

Frisco/Brown
Label:
SCUBA (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
SCUBA 007EP
"Scuba returns to the Scuba label with a much-anticipated release on wax. 'Frisco' is the logical conclusion to recent guitar-infused Scuba productions. Reaching for the four-string this time, Scuba comes up with a big tongue-in-cheek snare roll, leading to a digital dubstep bouncer strangely reminiscent of The Police. On the flip, Brown gets serious for one of the deepest Scuba tracks yet -- electronic melodic minimalism."
