But to get to the start, go back a little further, back to 2005 Laguna Beach -- a cell phone call from a friend who has something Ty would love to hear: live, distorted rock and roll from inside a Coachwhips practice space. Transduced through a satellite, no less. Hold up the phone. Yeah, it's 2005 and Ty's gonna move to SF. Get outta high school and move up there. Good thing too cause the Epsilons were rad but the Traditional Fools were a beer soaked painters cap drying in the sun, son. Until one day when Ty is the only Fool to show up to the show and it's one of those moments -- local history takes a turn and the world ain't gotta wait much more, now. Ty plays the show one-man-band style and goes home and plans the rest: the records you got, tunes in your head, the unpretentious display of rock wealth. "It ain't always clean. Not every time, man. Sometimes, hardly ever. Goodbye Bread is on its own level, but Ty Segall is an if-it-shines-it-shines kinda guy. And Spiders is more like downtown without the lights. The a-side creeps heavy and sounds like some Finnish funeral if it were a slow-jam on a dance floor littered with off-handed mutterings of the word 'gnarly' and everyone just a tad high but no one copping to it. Of course, that only adequately describes one of the A-side jams. Like a good friend, Spiders totally smacks both cheeks, what with being a double A-sided single and all. Per usual, the B-side -- or third spankmaster, as we're apt to call it -- is a through-the-ringer-cover (this time it's the Groundhogs) brought to new life through Ty-Fi Recording. Recorded just a few minutes ago (or months? who can tell?) with Sic Alps' Mike Donovan pushing the start and stop button on the tape machine, shit kills."
