Fabric 55
Label:
FABRIC (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
FABRIC 109CD
"The elusive Shackleton showcases his incendiary live set on
Fabric 55
. A disorienting trip through unclassifiable styles awaits those brave enough to enter the void. The self-effacing Lancashire-born Sam Shackleton first came to prominence during the early rise of the dubstep scene. The Skull Disco label he ran alongside Appleblim was influential, in that it combined more abstract or avant-garde musical forms with music that could work on advanced dancefloors. Skull Disco was home to Shackleton's cuts such as 'Stalker', 'Death Is Not Final' and 'Blood On My Hands', reworked by Ricardo Villalobos into an 18-minute four-to-the-floor version. Like Ricardo Villalobos and Omar S before, Shackleton's contribution to the
Fabric
series blurs the boundaries between artist album and mix CD, featuring only his own tracks. The mix consists mainly of unreleased, exclusive material alongside a handful of earlier tracks, and all tracks have been re-worked into entirely new, never-before-heard versions."

Deadman
Label:
HONEST JON'S RECORDS (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
HJP 052EP
Sam Shackleton
stalks deeper into the sub-loaded unknown. From his Fabric mix CD, "Deadman" turns paradox and paranoia into dancefloor fire. This is rolling, dread techno of breathtaking heat and humidity, spurred by hectoring congas and thick-set subs, amidst a teeming soundscape of drones, field recordings and oblique vocal textures.
Kevin Martin
adopts his
King Midas Sound
guise for an expansive remix which reveals his lineage in noise, industrial and isolationist ambient. Mastered by
Rashad Becker

Fireworks/Undeadman
Label:
HONEST JON'S RECORDS (UK)
Format:
2x12"
Price:
$20.00
Catalog #:
HJP 053EP
Two brilliant
Shackleton
tracks with remixes by
T++
and
Baron Mordant
. On "Fireworks," the mood is malevolent with synth shrapnel crisscrossing a stately, choral progression. T++'s remix enacts a rhythmic necromancy, its brittle, emaciated breakbeats shunting forward ravenously. "Undeadman" raises "Deadman." Midi signals from the original were sent to synths; sounds and effects were recorded separately and rearranged.
Mordant Music
re-fashions it into an epic of bad-trip kosmische. Designed by
Will Bankhead

MORDANT 014EP
Limited repress of this 2006 release. "Big Sam Shackleton (Skull Disco) is back with another dark n' grimey platter. It was clever-clogs Baron Mordant who first released Shackleton's first volley, 'Stalker' on a branded one-sided 7". Shackleton has since gone on to set up his own Skull Disco imprint which has to date released five plates of low-end woe to unanimous fanfare. The Mordant gang chip the keeper on the flip with with a beast of a track that blends '70s German sequencers and the dubstep doorstep. As ever with this label it's top quality and limited."

El Din (Part One)/Olde Wobbly
Label:
MORDANT MUSIC (UK)
Format:
10"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
MORDANT 024EP
"Mordant Music spore the shellac once again on 10" vinyl with staunch cohort Sam Shackleton. This will be the third missile from the Nesst involving ol' bones himself with a further one already teed up. 'El Din (Part One)' on the A unfurls in classic Shackleton fashion deploying his compulsive percussive lure followed by the eventual spilling over of bass and swirling atmospheres for which he is renowned. 'El Din (Part One)' throws a blanket over your head from behind and spins you off into the dunes. Over on the AA, Mordant Music continue to chart the uneasy rave wake of 'Hummdrumm' with the descending sequencer labyrinth of 'Olde Wobbly.' This claustrophobic ode to stifled corners in densely packed clubs is filled with strange tunings and forlorn fanfares. One for the wrong moment. Stay perched for the next installment."

PERLON (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
PERL 076CD
Surprise, surprise.... after several excellent releases on his imprint Skull Disco, Berlin transplant
Sam Shackleton
sends out some drones through Perlon. Shackleton's maverick take on big bass lines and complex beats doesn't fit into any easy categories. Shackleton has been carving out his own brand of eclecticism so far with intricate, snaking percussion, hypnotic melodies, seriously deep bass lines and dubwise sensibilities. With tribal percussion up against electronic screeeeeee, and some bass-y low-end backing ring modulators and other avant garde accessories,
Three EPs
is a milestone already.

SCUBA 005EP
2006 release, repressed! "Shackleton has been carving his own niche in the dubstep scene with seminal releases on Mordant Music and his own Skull Disco imprint. With techno legend Ricardo Villalobos showing a strong interest in this mercurial talent, he's begun to emerge from the shadows recently. These are two typical Shackleton cuts, with impossibly heavy bass, intricate percussion and a pounding beat. He's always threatening to stop making dubstep, it's a good job he always changes his mind..."

SKULL 003EP
"Shackleton's tracks have been getting a caning from the likes of Kode 9 and N Type on Rinse FM, through to the likes of Rob da Bank on Radio One and also on XFM, and at raves such as DMZ and Subloaded. Shackleton and his Skull Disco partner, Appleblim, along with top drawer rave master Necta Selecta, have been playing at various venues this year, from their own Skull Disco parties where they, along with Digital Mystiks, smashed it up in legendary style, through to Manchester with Vex'd and Bristol."

Label:
SKULL DISCO (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
SKULL 009EP
"For the 9th release in the Skull Disco series we see Shackleton teaming up with Tenfold Vengeance and the legendary Berlin producer T++ (Monolake, Dynamo, Erosion etc.) who is for our money up there with the finest and most notorious Berlin producers right now, pushing the sounds of Basic Channel right through to the bass music that co-exists between techno, breaks and dubstep. Kicking off where
Blood on My Hands
left us, with the minimal techno vibe still firmly intact and a heavy tribal, Eastern influence. Both tracks are absolutely epic, inspiring and represent the mash-up of genres influencing the Skull Disco camp."

Soundboy's Suicide Note
Label:
SKULL DISCO (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
SKULL 010EP
"Shackleton continues to push the musical envelope, reaching beyond the realms of dubstep into some dark fissure of future dread history. Drawing from a familiar palette of beats and bass, 'The Rope Tightens...' scatters rambling paranoiac poetry across a rushing moonscape soundstage, reprised in the brooding storm of '...But The Branch Is Weak.' 'In the Void' adds dashes of ethnic strings to color the darkness slightly, and 'Shortwave' finishes up with a rolling barrage of percussion, subs and icy gusts."

Man On A String Part 1 And 2/Bastard Spirit
Label:
WOE TO THE SEPTIC HEART! (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.50
Catalog #:
SEPTIC 001EP
"Since writing the suicide note for Skull Disco in 2008, Shackleton has made a well received long player for Perlon and remixed the likes of Harmonia and Brian Eno, Moderat and To Rococo Rot as well as making a mix CD for the Fabric series and one of the final mixes for the Mary Anne Hobbes show on Radio One. This release however sees Shackleton once again with his own label which will go by the name of Woe To The Septic Heart! Those who have heard Shackleton before may know what to expect and will not be surprised to hear two bass-heavy, percussive tracks with a psychedelic edge and an involved narrative that will perhaps not be played out on every dancefloor. More's the pity."
