The vinyl version of the new Shonky album is released as 2 separate 12"'s, 4 tracks each; this is part 1. Track 1 "Time Zero' -- the album's title track, lets loose with spiralling effects and a repeat-repeat vocal that heightens the psychedelic vibe. The airy chimes of "Nebula" evoke the questing spirit of Detroit and bring in a breath of Kraftwerk a la
Tour De France
. The obvious titular nod to Voodoo Ray is reflected in the warm, burnished tribal-tech of "Cosmic Ray". He returns to psychedelic techno with stand-out cut "Galactica," a tune whose dense atmospherics, backdrop of wolf-like wails and clever use of a female vocal would make the Belleville Three proud. Finally,
Time Zero
has landed and it doesn't merely justify the hype, it goes beyond. This is not a first class debut. It's a first class album, full stop.
Time Zero
is ripe with a musical intelligence well beyond Shonky's years."

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
FNC 001.2LP
Vinyl version, part 2. "Ondulation" hypnotizes with shimmering waves of acid and gleaming synth lines. There is more classic, intricate Detroit styling up his sleeve on "Odyssey," a clean cut tune rippling with sharp metallic synths and an eerie radio-signals-from-space motif, which tempts you to follow the sound to another dimension. Sexy, dubby, hip jackin' musical movements rule the intro on "Magma," moving into a deeper, more atmospheric space. And the final track "Minor Planets" embraces pure techno with its lush washing synths and crystalline beats. Smoothly tripping you out to now, to this moment, to

This is the debut full-length release from
Shonky
(
Olivier Ducreux
). Honing his taste within the Parisian dance scene via
Dan Ghenacia
's infamous Sunday "Kwality" Batofar parties, and 12"s on labels such as Mobilee, Resopal Red and Sub Static, Shonky now lives and DJs in Berlin. As Shonky himself describes, "Time Zero
is kind of techno/hypno, with many roots coming from Detroit techno and San Francisco psychedelic house; always super hypnotic. Ultimately, I did what I do the best: danceable tracks
." The title track opens Shonky's space-travel with spiraling effects and a repeat-repeat vocal that heightens the psychedelic vibe. The airy chimes of "Nebula" evoke the questing spirit of Detroit and bring in a breath of
Kraftwerk
a la Tour De France. "Ringside With Dione" slows down the beat to push up the intensity; turning out late night music with dubby, shooting stabs that turn your mind inside out. The obvious titular nod to acid house classic "Voodoo Ray" is reflected in the warm, burnished tribal-tech of "Cosmic Ray." He returns to psychedelic techno with stand-out cut "Galactica," a tune whose dense atmospherics, backdrop of wolf-like wails and clever use of a female vocal would make the Belleville Three proud. Beckoning you ever further into the cosmos, "Ellipse" matches horn licks to gently rattling percussion as the main melody seems to come floating in from outer space; its shimmering, progressive synths peaking and peaking. Time Zero Remixes EP
Label:
FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
FNC 027EP
The title track from
Shonky
's debut artist album
Time Zero
gets a remix package from two of the underground's most in-demand production talents:
Paul Ritch
and
Mathias Kaden
. Ritch's mix holds down a steady and undulating, percussive groove that lets the spiraling effects of the original loose midway, leading back into a rolling finish. Mathias Kaden strips it back and creates a beat-laden take on the original, with some added irate synth detail.

Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
RSPRED 008EP
"Resopal Red continues its drive to acquire fresh talents and music with this debut by French producer Olivier Doitroux, aka Shonky. He surely is a musician at heart and his remixes together with Jennifer Cardini can prove that. Some info? Olivier already reworked 'Rancho Relaxo' on Mobilee and the track 'Far Away' on Crosstown Rebels."

Label:
SUB STATIC (GERMANY)
Format:

Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
SUS 059EP
"The French once again: hardly the fact that they have appeared on the minimal map and have erased out any recollection of the Filterhouseterror from in those days, now they begin the storm of the Bastille. Zillions of young talents seem to slosh in the shelves, however, one has set down itself on the quiet already from the leadership field: Shonky. As a coproducer of Jennifer Cardini, he could already rest on some laurels, but he still has his own plans. Sub Static presents two properly psychedelic minimum racketeers as they could hardly fall out more individualistically. Correctly fitted with spring beats delivered the through ball for precisely placed schizo chords and who is still responsible there, has missed the takeoff. Hypnotically, the sounds mill themselves by the bodies and hatch behind the diaphragm, only to press ahead at the right moment like Alien out of Ripley."
