Title: Coco Feel And Love Shonk
Label: CONTEXTERRIOR (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: CNTXT 026EP
"Berlin-based Olivier Ducreux releases his first EP for Contexterrior, following his highly regarded material for Freak n'Chic, Crosstown Rebels, Mobilee and Sub Static. Shonky first made a name for himself as a DJ in Paris late last decade, and made his production debut in 2005 for Freak n'Chic, with a slew of acclaimed releases, plus remix requests from the likes of Tiefschwarz and Anja Schneider. Now, following the release of his debut full-length album earlier this year, Shonky joins Contexterrior for three fresh tech-house productions. 'Coco Feel and Love Shonk ' revolves around a naïve organ loop and strict grid-based percussion, while free-spirited sine waves dance and flutter about and gentle female vocals appear. DJs who secretly enjoy 'Missing' by Everything But The Girl might want to check this one out. On the flip, the mechanical 'Donkey Kong' will give you enough energy to climb ladders and brick walls all day long, and the bouncy closing track 'Doctor Slump' will diagnose you with a severe case of dance mania."

Title: Chocotox
Label: CONTEXTERRIOR (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: CNTXT 033EP
Paris DJ Shonky (Olivier Ducreux) offers four immaculately-produced tracks that take Contexterrior into a housier direction. Chocotox is packed with jacking syncopation and swing. Expect stomping workouts with a plethora of interlocking rhythms, some heavy organ action, and diva vocals that have been subverted into the overall mix rather than used as a focal point. Shonky has clearly done his homework, with respect for the past house originators, while clearly bringing the tradition into the future.

Title: Les Shonkettes
Label: CONTEXTERRIOR (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: CNTXT 045EP
Shonky delivers four luscious house gems for Contexterrior. "Les Shonkettes" is a fast-paced house cut harking back to early days with stark piano stabs and echoes of soprano melodies, brought up-to-date. "Crapulerie" is hypnotic and seductive, taking a darker and slower angle with its central rumbling bass line. Similarly, the loops of "Obelix" entangle the listener in a swaying rhythm of vocal cries and spellbinding sounds. "Conquistador" is the final curtain, glistening with charm and alight with pleasure.

Title: Time Zero Part One
Label: FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FNC 001.1LP
The vinyl version of the new Shonky album is released as 2 separate 12"'s, 4 tracks each; this is part 1. Track 1 "Time Zero' -- the album's title track, lets loose with spiralling effects and a repeat-repeat vocal that heightens the psychedelic vibe. The airy chimes of "Nebula" evoke the questing spirit of Detroit and bring in a breath of Kraftwerk a la Tour De France. The obvious titular nod to Voodoo Ray is reflected in the warm, burnished tribal-tech of "Cosmic Ray". He returns to psychedelic techno with stand-out cut "Galactica," a tune whose dense atmospherics, backdrop of wolf-like wails and clever use of a female vocal would make the Belleville Three proud. Finally, Time Zero has landed and it doesn't merely justify the hype, it goes beyond. This is not a first class debut. It's a first class album, full stop. Time Zero is ripe with a musical intelligence well beyond Shonky's years."

Title: Time Zero Part Two
Label: FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FNC 001.2LP
Vinyl version, part 2. "Ondulation" hypnotizes with shimmering waves of acid and gleaming synth lines. There is more classic, intricate Detroit styling up his sleeve on "Odyssey," a clean cut tune rippling with sharp metallic synths and an eerie radio-signals-from-space motif, which tempts you to follow the sound to another dimension. Sexy, dubby, hip jackin' musical movements rule the intro on "Magma," moving into a deeper, more atmospheric space. And the final track "Minor Planets" embraces pure techno with its lush washing synths and crystalline beats. Smoothly tripping you out to now, to this moment, to Time Zero.

Title: Time Zero
Label: FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FNC 002CD
This is the debut full-length release from Shonky (Olivier Ducreux). Honing his taste within the Parisian dance scene via Dan Ghenacia's infamous Sunday "Kwality" Batofar parties, and 12"s on labels such as Mobilee, Resopal Red and Sub Static, Shonky now lives and DJs in Berlin. As Shonky himself describes, "Time Zero is kind of techno/hypno, with many roots coming from Detroit techno and San Francisco psychedelic house; always super hypnotic. Ultimately, I did what I do the best: danceable tracks." The title track opens Shonky's space-travel with spiraling effects and a repeat-repeat vocal that heightens the psychedelic vibe. The airy chimes of "Nebula" evoke the questing spirit of Detroit and bring in a breath of Kraftwerk a la Tour De France. "Ringside With Dione" slows down the beat to push up the intensity; turning out late night music with dubby, shooting stabs that turn your mind inside out. The obvious titular nod to acid house classic "Voodoo Ray" is reflected in the warm, burnished tribal-tech of "Cosmic Ray." He returns to psychedelic techno with stand-out cut "Galactica," a tune whose dense atmospherics, backdrop of wolf-like wails and clever use of a female vocal would make the Belleville Three proud. Beckoning you ever further into the cosmos, "Ellipse" matches horn licks to gently rattling percussion as the main melody seems to come floating in from outer space; its shimmering, progressive synths peaking and peaking. "Ondulation" hypnotizes with shimmering waves of acid and gleaming synth lines. There is more classic, intricate Detroit styling up his sleeve on "Odyssey," a clean cut tune rippling with sharp metallic synths and an eerie radio-signals-from-space motif, which tempts you to follow the sound into another dimension. Sexy, dubby, hip-jackin' musical movements rule the intro on "Magma," moving into a deeper, more atmospheric space. Finally, the track "Minor Planets" embraces pure techno with its lush washing synths and crystalline beats. This is not a first class debut. It's a first class album, full stop.

Title: Time Zero Remixes EP
Label: FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FNC 027EP
The title track from Shonky's debut artist album Time Zero gets a remix package from two of the underground's most in-demand production talents: Paul Ritch and Mathias Kaden. Ritch's mix holds down a steady and undulating, percussive groove that lets the spiraling effects of the original loose midway, leading back into a rolling finish. Mathias Kaden strips it back and creates a beat-laden take on the original, with some added irate synth detail.

Title: Roudor & Capulet EP
Label: FREAK N' CHIC (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: FNC 040EP
Shonky presents three tracks of forward-thinking house music. The title track has a confident, peak-time swagger with the kind of earthy, funky bass and trippy, effect-laden top lines that have defined Shonky's output. The B-side cuts display a deeper but no less "dancefloor" side to his personality. Both tracks are classic, soulful house music with modern twists; "Carnage" treads a slightly more vocal path while "Arena" walks an instrumental route. Simple, groovy house -- exactly as it should be.

Title: Closer To Pluton
Label: RESOPAL RED (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: RSPRED 008EP
"Resopal Red continues its drive to acquire fresh talents and music with this debut by French producer Olivier Doitroux, aka Shonky. He surely is a musician at heart and his remixes together with Jennifer Cardini can prove that. Some info? Olivier already reworked 'Rancho Relaxo' on Mobilee and the track 'Far Away' on Crosstown Rebels."
