FUSE 044CD
"Fiery phoenix, four horsemen, or just plain ferocious, Sightings is back with another free rock H-Bomb. Comprised primarily of improvisations and recorded for the price of cassette tape, they leave no doubt western civilization is coming to an end...
End Times
is 56 minutes of head-rinsing to take the millenarian fever to the next level."

"Crafting a lasting personal aesthetic in the midst of our ephemeral music culture is as rare as it is cause for celebration. With the release of
City of Straw
Brooklyn's Sightings can be counted among the few contemporary bands who have forged a unique voice amongst the racket. Recorded over a number of months in 2009 at The Ocropolis (Oneida's Brooklyn, NY studio), the band's seventh studio album becomes the crucible from which their grandest and most coherent statement finally emerges. Sightings has never presented a particularly welcoming façade and their sui generis music has perhaps been passed over by less discerning listeners over the eleven years of their existence, but throughout this they have created a singular body of work appreciated and touted by the likes of Thurston Moore and Andrew WK. Sightings will insist (and we agree wholeheartedly) that at their core they are a rock band working within the context of pop song-craft. As bassist Richard Hoffman told us recently,
'I think everyone in the band tries to remember the value of minimalism. Ultimately I think we try to write pop music, where there's no chaff and everything has a place.'
With a deep reach beyond the spirit of their influence from greats like Birthday Party, Dead C and Jesus Lizard,
City of Straw
finds Sightings working at the peak of their creative powers and is the perfect re-introduction to one of New York's most accomplished bands."

"Eight songs that take apart rock music atom by atom so that you are left with a skeleton of sound. Sightings still use the tools of the trade -- guitar, bass and drums -- to take both rock and roll out of rock n' roll. Reference weirdo deconstructo outfits like Einsturzende Neubauten, (mid-period) Black Dice, and Mainliner. This is the sound between the guitar strings, inside the bass amp, and within a drum stick. Yes, the truth. If punk rock used to mean fucking shit up and doing it your own way, this record erects a mile high middle finger facing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

"Never before has a band managed to erase themselves. New York City's Sightings have risen to the challenge of negation with this 'what the fuck' of a record that rolls the twenty sided dice to dematerialize any trace of guitar, bass and drums into proton dust floating microns on top of the speaker cone. Minimal, yes. Previous records have gone from favorites at magazines as chocolate and peanut butter as the Wire and Terrorizer. Past records have been steaming knee burn befuddled by German technoid impulse and Yoko-damaged Beatles-busting intensity. A new icy coolness is added to the steaming soup this time allowing the sounds of mouth breathing to open up the record into a drug-fueled nightclub beast humping a bass bin as the sun rises."

"It's kind of strange to think it's been ten years since we first saw Sightings blowing minds and circuit breakers throughout the then fresh Brooklyn loft scene. Over the years, the band has taken that ball of blare they were initially 'known for' and pulled it apart strand by strand and wire by wire to get to the transparent core of their sound while still retaining their disturbing qualities. Their past two full lengths, 2007's
Through the Panama
and 2010's
City of Straw
were obviously successful in this exploration, but
Future Accidents
really nails it in giving up the honest-to-god barebones goods. A rawer sprawl into the pregnant nowhere sound has yet to be waxed by these gents and if'n they ever do top this, I'll just utter the words I saw on the back of that pick-up truck the other day, 'HOT DAMN!'" --Tony Rettman; Resident Blowhard; Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

Price:

SS 060LP
"When Sightings second album not only crushed everything that they had done prior, but revealed the band to be sonic explorers of Magellanic proportions. Sightings' overblown intensity was joined by abrasive twists and subtle unconventionality, a combination of sounds which one reviewer likened to 'a storm of knives.' Or something like listening to Terry Riley and Steve Reich through a Big Muff at 110 decibels. With
Michigan Haters
, Sightings started on what would become nearly a decade long reinvention of the rock & roll song. First through volume and now through invention, Sightings has given up a series of great albums:
Absolutes
, which clearly builds on what
Michigan Haters
created,
Arrived in Gold
, the coolly brilliant
Through the Panama
, and the fantastic
City of Straw
. Originally released on CD in 2002 by Psych-O-Path, didn't get a proper vinyl release. So after years of Sightings and SS talking about doing a single, I finally said 'Hey,
Michigan Haters
needs to be on vinyl. Let me do it!'"
