"David Berman is a funny guy who talks too much. But when he straps on the guitar, he's a funny guy who sings not nearly enough. Then there's the pop know-how of Pavement singer Stephen Malkmus, his soothing voice in direct Cher-like relief to his muse: the inspiring untrained gravel of Berman's lead vocal (Sonny!). Bingo -- you've got
American Water
. This record will be your prostitute for the next six weeks, should you come up with the nerve to pimp it."

"
Bright Flight
is the fourth Silver Jews album, but it could also be called 'Silver Jews In Space' -- that's how high and lonesome it sounds. All the Silver Jews traditions are there -- the vague country-rock, the solid silver tunes, Berman's moan-and-yowl, way-out lyrics, the secret hits and the sudden twists in the road that only Silver Jews songs have."

"'Tennessee,' is up there with the best of em, hence its inclusion on this otherwise non-LP EP. All the songs here were recorded with the ten songs on
Bright Flight
-- but some were more clearly b-side material, therefore their unmistakable presence on this here 'Tennessee' EP."

"The seasons come and go, as do the years. Nothing is guaranteed. Save one item: as long as David Berman rampages on the outer crust of this planet with at least one fellow traveler, the Silver Jews will always exist. Still, after the world-weary ennui of
Bright Flight
and an unprecedented four years had passed without a new Jews to review, even the most faithful had begun to wonder what the future held. Was the music community still covered by the No-Band-Break-Up Guarantee that came included in the sleeve of 1993's
Dimemap of the Reef
EP? Had we lost sight of 'the only band that doesn't buy ads,' 'the only band that is never on tribute albums,' 'the only band that doesn't play live,' and remember this one: 'the only band that matters?'
Tanglewood Numbers
answers all of your questions and then asks them some more. The future's full of rock, hard knocks and some of the best fucking songs you've ever heard."

"Silver Jews make quintessentially American popular music -- but 'Suffering Jukebox' and 'My Pillow is the Threshold' strike deep into the worldwide realm of the chart-worthy Song. This is the sound that sold out countless shows across the globe on the first-ever Silver Jews tour back in 2005 and 2006. This is a sound for all nations. Witness the wide-hearted power of the chorus of 'Strange Victory, Strange Defeat' or the ear-pleasuring chime of 'Open Field' (a Maher Shalal Hash Baz cover!), which will recall to old-timers their footloose days of R.E.M. fandom before the rest of the world knew or cared -- or didn't care anymore. Here the urgent burst of life and how to live it is realized! Days of '80s-'90s flavor are aflame again in these tunes.
For Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea
's epic centerpiece, look no further than 'San Francisco, B.C.' A panorama of music history is on display behind Berman's fable of dovetailing fates, featuring the ominous appearance of Mr. Games -- a Merry Pranksters version of 'Street Hassle,' if you will. As ever, history is longer than we think. Classic Silver Jews-isms signal our arrival into 'Candy Jail,' an institution overflowing with assorted titular sweets as well as a few bitter treats too. Suddenly the sky is overhead as the breeze ruffs our hair and 'Party Barge' is merrily launched. It's back to a state of nature for the finale, and with the realization that 'We Might Be Looking for the Same Thing,' along with all our other human feelings, we swing back to our local jungle, waving goodbye to D.C.B. and his bunch, edified, emulsified, intensified, stronger, ready. Uncanny! Excellent! An essential product of the times! A new and necessary album from Silver Jews!"

"From behind closed doors since 1992, David Berman and the Silver Jews released a series of popular music records that earned the group dedicated fans all over the world. But being a Silver Jews fan always meant accepting you'd never live to see the day your favorite band would take the stage. Then in 2006, after five albums and fifteen years, David Berman decided to change all that. The band toured across America and Europe, all the way to Israel, playing these, their first forty shows, to a widespread outpouring of joy.
Silver Jew
is a simple document of one of those stops, whereupon the band played two shows in Tel Aviv, and spent a profound afternoon in Jerusalem." Bonus features include trailer, annotated slideshow, and two music videos. NTSC; All-region; running time: 52 mins.
