Artist: STAGGA
Title: Sick As Sin
Label: RAG & BONE (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: TOTTER 021EP
"Welsh producer Stagga bursts onto the dubstep scene with a refreshingly new take on things. With a legacy in hip-hop and fresh from a debut release currently on Rossi B & Luca's Rudeez imprint of Jacqueline/ Policeman Get Hype, Stagga now serves up 3 indisputable slabs of wonkiness for Rag & Bone. 'Sick As Sin' is the big hitter, with it's centerpiece phrase 'Dropping you out like a bong of smack and waking you up like a bong of crack' courtesy of the vocal talents of Skamma, it's got big tune written all over it. On the flip, 'Predatory Control Freeks' is a different matter altogether. Wise utterings on the sinister intentions of the new world architects drift in and out of an eerie soundtrack, while 'Freight Dub' gets deep on a smokers vibe. Its swathes of spooky synths blend perfectly with some hypnotic banter. Stagga has an extensive background producing hip-hop and was the founding member of British turntablists group Optimas Prime who went on to win 'Best Hip Hop Act 2001' (Welsh music foundation awards). He also more recently played an important role with off-kilter hip-hop outfit Dead Residents who got sizeable exposure on Radio 1. Fans of DZ, Starkey, Raffertie, Skream, and Joker will like this. It's early days but these tracks have already seen early support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Starkey (Planet Mu), Rossi B & Luca, Rob Booth (Electronic Explorations), Surgeon, Joe Muggs (Mixmag), Rob Da Bank (Radio 1) Bunzero and Sub FM DJs."

Title: Face Gets Splat EP
Label: RAG & BONE (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: TOTTER 022EP
"We don't really do remixes, but with the original 'Sick As Sin' smacking it, this rework smacks it even more. Carefully staying true to the original and not interfering with its initial blast, this version tweaks it just enough to bring you back to that point when this tune first dropped and you couldn't play it enough. On the flip-side you have 2 utterly brand new bangers that each provide prime time ammunition in their own right. 'Face Gets Splat' embodies trademark Stagga production with the lyrical talents of Y Dot Tzer J Bone getting into a metaphorical battle with other MCs. While 'Tha Criss Gurge Supply' pitches down a little and gives itself a haunting swagger all of its own. Stagga has an extensive background producing hip-hop through his involvement with Optimas Prime and off kilter act Dead Residents. His dubstep incarnations have appeared on Rossi B & Lucas label Rudeez, Berlin outlet Robox -- Neotech and of course Rag & Bone. Strong support from Starkey, Raffertie, Rob Da Bank, RSD, Pirate Sound System, Kanji Kinetic, Chrome Kids, etc."

Title: Wild For The Night
Label: SLIT JOCKEY (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: SJ 004EP
Slit Jockey is the "other" label operated by Starkey, Dev79 and El Carnicero, The two Stagga originals here are heat rocks in the street bass-style of kitchen sink aesthetics, taking nods from dubstep, grime and rap all bashed together in a way that is undeniably Stagga. Heavy play from Gaslamp Killer, Starkey, Eprom, Kozee and much early blog support. Robot Koch amps things up with his stomping refix of "Wild For The Night" and DNAEBEATS flips a serious head-nodder remix on "Be The Generals."
