"After several limited CDR releases and four years of incessant touring throughout America and Europe, NYC destructo-jazz trio Talibam! has taken its maiden voyage into the recording studio, where the group immersed itself in a non-stop, three-day session of furious improv. The result is Ordination of the Globetrotting Conscripts, the band's first-ever compact disc release, and a luminous, unexpected masterpiece. Matt Mottel (keyboards) has collaborated with everyone from Prick Decay, Chris Corsano and Test to Awesome Color, Akron/Family and Deerhunter, his hyperkinetic playing pitched somewhere between '96 Tears' and Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy. Ed Bear (baritone sax, electronics) is a consummate circuit-bender and master of extended technique for bari sax; he runs his horn through a battery of homemade boxes and effects pedals for maximal feedback and subsonic bass rumble. Kevin Shea (drums) was a core member of Storm and Stress and Coptic Light before his current tenure as drummer in People (his duo with Mary Halvorson) and the Peter Evans Quartet; he is, by a wide margin, the most versatile and articulate drummer of his generation. Like the Sun City Girls before them, Talibam! are musical omnivores and uncanny telepaths. Collectively, they have digested everything from free-jazz, Americana and noise, to Afro-pop, garage and electroacoustic composition and connect the dots between these idioms to create spontaneous and vivid constellations of sound. Ordination... is at once an oblique commentary on the geopolitical nightmares of the 21st century, a beautiful work of collective improvisation and a cracked piece of ecstatic, American noise. The core trio of Mottel, Bear and Shea works up a sonic maelstrom that belies their spare instrumentation. For the Ordination... sessions they were joined by some of the finest improvisers in New York, including trumpeter Peter Evans; pianist and inventor Cooper-Moore; drummer Michael Evans; and guitarist Jeremy Wilms, expanding their sound into an orchestral roar. Together they've made a record that will thrill fans of Bat Chain-era Magic Band, Lightning Bolt, late-'70s Arkestra, Rock In Opposition, Boredoms, Naked City, and Ornette's Dancing In Your Head."
