Midline reissue of this 1988 album, which was the fourth album by this UK group, retrospectively known for giving us the body & soul of Mark Hollis. Starting out in the realm of well dressed Euro synthpop, they took a distinct turn into downward spiral of morbidly self-obsessive song form on this album and the group-killing finale, Laughing Stock. These records achieved whispered underground status in the mid-90s or so, and although I'm sure there was probably somebody else besides Jim O'Rourke who was intuitive enough to stumble across them, I'm not going to guess who that was. The well-loved 1998 self-titled Mark Hollis album on Polydor is a direct descent from the direction opened up here. "Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden -- those last 2 LPs are definitely spiritual forebearers of some seemingly sui generis music -- Gastr & Scott Walker's Tilt spring to mind -- and are fucking twisted & genius to boot. Cathartic, even." -- Jason Witherspoon
