After their track for the Cocoon Morphs Tokyo EPs in 2008, Tiefschwarz now rely on a percussive reduction with piercing hand-claps and strong vocal samples ("Fall In"). "Keep On" initially leaves the leading role to the bass, combining it with delayed vocals and surprising noise effects before introducing some organic and jazzy elements in the form of organ and xylophone sounds. Berlin's Ali and Basti Schwarz are brothers and music lovers. To celebrate 10 years of success as music producers and DJs, they release a double CD compilation on their own label, Souvenir. The first CD is a mixture of Ali and Basti's musical influences, spanning their entire DJ career (Antipop Consortium, Frankie Knuckles, Ewan Pearson, Marianne Faithfull). The second CD is an exclusive selection of the finest Tiefschwarz tracks, remixed by their favorite producers and friends (Radio Slave, Matias Aguayo, Shonky, Samim, Turntablerocker, Kiki, etc.). Tiefschwarz was created out of a passion garnered since 1990 from their first experiences as DJs at the now-legendary clubs that Ali ran, and from their debut album Ral 9005 on Four Music in 2000 to their legendary status as THE remixers, producers, and DJs in the world, they helped establish Fine Records in London and went on to spend the majority of their time working on the Eat Books album which was released in 2005. Eat Books went on to receive much critical acclaim, so in 2006, they released two DJ mix albums, one for the outstanding Fabric series and the other in conjunction with the Time Warp festival in Germany. Finally, they have started up their very own label, Souvenir. Berlin's Ali and Basti Schwarz joined rhythmic forces sometime around 1997. Their first venture was 24 Seven, which firmly put the then-sleepy Stuttgart on the map as a top nightlife destination. The deep house duo then debuted with their single Music in 1999 and by 2001, the pair were expanding the parameters of modern dance music with their album RAL9005. Tiefschwarz quickly became a mainstay on the club scene. With the licensing of the album by Classic Recordings, Tiefschwarz captured the attention of London, paving the way for their rise to international notoriety. Through high profile remixes, they have also made a name for themselves as masters of reworking other people's tunes. Depeche Mode ("John The Revelator"), Madonna ("Get Together") and Spektrum ("Kinda New") are just three of the many artists who have had the Tiefschwarz treatment. And as it gets dark and the deep black of the night sets in, Tiefschwarz come to life -- clubbing being their biggest vice, yet also their biggest strength. Now they're back with their third album Chocolate, the first release on their own label, Souvenir. Techno and house still form the foundations, yet Tiefschwarz push themselves beyond their previous limits. They've found a new, intrinsic sound of their own that oscillates between numerous genres -- at once both clear-cut and immensely intricate. One minute, the steady bass drives a dancing rhythm, the next, it would have you believe that four-to-the-floor is actually a beat based on a prime number. Chocolate is everything: subtle, bitter, and sweet, without milk and sugar, hand-crafted from only the finest ingredients. The tracks work perfectly on the dancefloor, yet at the same time, the album as a whole is great to listen to outside of the club setting, due to its fantastic depth, enduring vocal tracks and subtle production methods. The first single "Find Me" (featuring Cassy) is the perfect example of striking the right balance between music to dance to and music to listen to. Alongside Cassy, guest features include Seth Troxler, Dave Aju and a talented new singer with an incredible voice, whose identity is yet to be revealed. Ali and Basti worked with Philipp Maier aka Santé to produce the tracks, and the new dynamic that has emerged from the collaborative production process has manifested itself in a distinct live quality.

Part 1 of a 2 12" release from Tiefschwarz aims at the heart of house music: soul. "On&On" starts off with a mellow theme that is adumbrated by the bass line, a quickening tempo and an edgy, minor key-chord sequence. The vocals at the grand finale never fail to raise a smile from the dancefloor. "Best Inn" is reminiscent of long gone nu-groove times including a tiny, off-beat tinkerbell, making you wish you were back at a deep-house set in 1992.

Part 2 of the two-part Simple, Maybe 12" series reveals the dark side of the brothers Schwarz. The basis of "Yeah" is a perfectly-orchestrated bass-drum, rolling toms, and a crisp snare, all powered by a low-pitch synth sample in the background. Add a well-filtered choir sample, and you get deepness and amplitude. "Deininger" is driven by a dark deep-house bass line, an off-beat synth wind section, tinkling bells and sliced vocals, well-orchestrated by a fine mix and undeniable groove.

Tiefschwarz's rework of "Stones" has the rhythmic intricacies of a fully-automated machine. Layering on top of this bed of percussion are stabs of vocals and melodic synthesizers that build to a fantastic climax at the song's mid-point. "Hypnotic" is a term that is thrown about somewhat in these genres; this time, it has a rightful home. Also included is Guido Schneider's remix of the Tiefschwarz track "Find Me," which features Cassy.

Tiefschwarz present volume two of remixes inspired by the candy world of their LP Chocolate (SOUVENIR 002CD). Penner+Muder alternate dark, stomping beats and melancholic piano-led parts. Amir (aka Rimah Khalouf) liquefies the original track with bubbling sound effects and turns the vocals into dizzying, futuristic chants. Kiki goes straight for the groove -- his jazzy keyboard simmers with classic deep waves and frequency noises. "Home" (feat. David Wilde), is remixed by Soul Clap for a mental and anguished trip.

"Today, one of the label's most successful releases, the On The Bus EP gets the most complete of reworking's. The EP's original tracks, Lawler's own 'Hocus Pocus,' Audiofly's 'Shazam' and Tiefschwarz's 'Voodoo' were all conceived whilst traveling across the United States as part of a VIVa Tour. Born in the studio that was housed in their tour bus, each track was then completed by each artist on their return home. Next up and on EP 2 we have the remixes of Tiefschwarz's 'Voodoo.' Bringing the black magic this time is Hungarian artist Son-Tec and the awesomely talented Tolga Fiden. Fiden's version is a brilliantly fresh, pacey, techy turn. Tiefschwarz mixes the ninth edition of the Watergate compilation. This series is a further means for the club to stamp its seal onto the scene, with many of the club's residents and regular talents having been invited to contribute. Previous artists have included the likes of Ellen Allien, Sascha Funke and Lee Curtiss, amongst others. This time round, the mighty Schwarz brothers step up, using it as a means to take stock and look back at their extensive music career. The mix takes them all the way back to their early days throwing parties in Stuttgart, at the Red Dog club which they named in honor of the legendary Chicago venue. These soulful roots which first hooked them and got them producing, stuck with them throughout, an insistence of melody and warmth which has pervaded throughout all their productions regardless of whether it can be labeled deep house, electro house or minimal. This mix is just a way of demonstrating the sheer timelessness of classic production techniques and how they so readily still influence so many of today's releases. Neither is it just a mere greatest hits of Chicago and Detroit, a legendary anthem like Frankie Knuckles' "Baby Wants To Ride" sitting quite comfortably alongside the tense melodies of John Roberts' house, which itself wears its Chicago influence proudly on its sleeve. There are some real dancefloor bombs, the cult classic "Intellidred" remix of DJ Assassin which slides effortlessly into the infectious jack of Kevin Saunderson. The anthemic MK classic "Burnin'" comes in a surprising new form, courtesy of Jay Haze, and there's plenty more vocal action in the mix with Julio Bashmore's recent smash "Father Father" and a brand new Tiefschwarz production punctuated with the ethereal voice of Mama. One of Tiefschwarz's first loves were the prolific house legends Masters At Work, a true personal milestone for the brothers when they were asked to remix their heroes' smash hit "To Be In Love." They've included one of their all-time favorites, the MAW remix of the Afro Celt Soundsystem, the world music collective on Peter Gabriel's influential Real World Records. This then functions to lead out the mix, the brothers deftly tracing a line through a very recent Marc Ashken track on Hot Waves and into Romanthony's "Rumpshaker," which, having been released on their own first label back in 1997, draws a neat circular close to this very personal retrospective.
