This is the third studio album from German DJ/producer Gregor Tresher. In the recent past, the producer of 2008's best-selling techno track on Beatport ("A Thousand Nights") has aspired to make music he would want to play out. While Lights From The Inside features several songs sure to find favor with Tresher's nightclub colleagues, this 12-song odyssey operates on multiple levels. Just as a painting or photograph appears to move if one stares at it long enough, with close listening, the stratified grooves and melodies assembled on Lights From The Inside reveal an organic universe of shifting sound. Meticulous attention to the latter element, melody, was of utmost concern to the Frankfurt resident. Not obvious, eight-bar earworms that would quickly exhaust their welcome, but musical lines that could repeat and intertwine in different patterns, "melodies that are more subtle and develop as you're listening." In this regard, Lights From The Inside harks back to Tresher's earlier releases, even as his aesthetic continues to evolve in new directions. Tone color was also a key consideration. Listen to the interplay of slow-moving tones and twinkling sounds on the title track, or how muted snare hits reverberate against the chilly lower registers of "Leaving." It's no coincidence that the almost-tactile crackles, clanks and pops animating the whole album sometimes recall Depeche Mode's Construction Time Again; the producer cites that 1984 classic as a long-time inspiration, alongside work by other electro-pop iconoclasts from that era. The album's play of light against darkness and its pervasive mood of melancholy, both underscored by its title, betray a more specific influence on Tresher's latest offering: The Cure's Disintegration. As on that 1989 landmark, he aspired to create an all-encompassing sense of atmosphere, as well as a comprehensive album that covered varied emotional terrain. Towards that end, specific set pieces guide the shape and flow of the record: The menacing opener "Shadow Layers"; the concise, ebullient interlude "If Only"; and "Destroy," a metallic, rumbling closer that concludes the album with an air of questions-yet-unanswered. Tresher aspires to create what another producer once sagely called "music that makes you dance and cry at the same time." With its simultaneous, synchronized appeal to the feet, head and heart, Lights From The Inside succeeds.

"With his debut longplayer A Thousand Nights from 2007 Gregor Tresher undoubtedly upgraded himself into the Champions League of European techno artists, with the title song being the year´s best selling techno song on Beatport. And also the following releases on labels like Josh Wink´s Ovum or Dubfire´s Sci +Tec made it into the playlists of almost every big name DJ around the world. Now Gregor has taken the next step and presents a foretaste of his upcoming second album. The title track once more is 'another paradigm of Gregor´s talent of creating epic techno tracks with enigmatic harmonies to make them true anthems of the night' (Groove Magazine, #117). Gregor is working with classic sounding filtered synthesizer-lines, and when the bassline finally kicks in, we can already see everyone´s hands in the air. The second track 'Escape To Amsterdam' is a techno track par excellence, made by a DJ for the DJs, going down a storm everywhere Gregor is playing it out. And finally, on the B-Side, we have the first remix for the Life Wire Project, and with Petar Dundov it is one of the first artists on Gregor's wishlist of remixers for the album. With his recent releases the Croatian has impressively shown his talent of creating the most amazing melodies and once more, his remix leaves nothing to be desired: His 'Petar Dundov Variation' is an incredibly beautiful piece of music, that will ignite open air floors over the summer, and we are extremely happy with this first interpretation of Gregor´s track."

This is German DJ and producer Gregor Tresher's third release for the Datapunk label. Tresher has rendered outstanding electro services with his project Sniper Mode, modernizing the formal style of electro. His two albums Wastelands (2002) and Travellers Beyond (2003) supplied the blueprint for the musical orientation of the Elektrolux sub-label, Mikrolux. Tresher is considered to be the hottest newcomer of the past year, in part due to the Still EP (2005) and the "Komm" remix of the Väth/Rother contribution to the Cocoon Compilation E -- Tresher achieved two tracks which received a place of honour in Sven Väth's DJ box and were included in his successful compilation, The Sound Of The Sixth Season. Tresher has rocked the best clubs in all of Europe in the past year, from London to Budapest, from Madrid to Athens, from Marseilles to Berlin. For this reason, Tresher selected for Neon - Works In The Mix, two independent formats which present both his role as producer as well as DJ equally. As Tresher says, "The freedom to be able to use elements like vocals or melodies has exquisitely expanded the spectrum of electronic dance music. For me, therefore, elektro has ... a fully new meaning and is no longer defined by 808 beats or vocoder vocals but rather stands for style-spanning and energetic electronic music, free of conventions and rules and expandable in every direction." Whereas the four exclusive new titles are found in unmixed form on the double 12", the CD edition presents these tracks with Tresher's entire Datapunk back catalog as a perfect DJ mix and thus really makes Tresher's musical development clear. From "Firebutton"'s classic vocoder-electro to the saw tooth attacks of "Doom" and "On" to "Still"'s Rhine-Main early '90s flavor, Datapunk predicts an excellent positioning for Tresher in all relevant annual charts for 2006.

Gregor Tresher returns to Ovum with two funky monsters. "As Days Go By," which will move any dancefloor, is driven by an infectious bass line. It goes through peaks and valleys, but the end result is pure energy. "Moving Islands" is more of the same, but Gregor does it with a different twist. The groovy guitar riff funks things along with vocal snippets and organ stabs, making this a dancefloor destroyer. Two great tracks that will be sure to cause a ruckus.
