Title: Music For Piano
Label: EDITION RZ (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $38.50
Catalog #: RZ 1018/19CD
2007 release. Crucial compilation of David Tudor's most historic performances of avant-garde and minimalist piano compositions, featuring works by these composers: John Cage, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Sylvano Bussotti. Mostly seminal recordings from the mid-'50s, total date range of 1955-1963. Includes "Music For Piano 21-36," "Variations 1," "Variations II," "Winter Music," "Piece For Four Pianos" (including performance by Feldman). "David Tudor, pianist -- a profession, a vocation, a life. From 1950 until around 1965, David Tudor was the epitome of the pianist who could simply play anything. In fact, David Tudor was no longer a name, but an indication for instrumentation as dozens of pieces were written 'for David Tudor.' As early as 1960, after having conquered all of the challenges posed by serial piano music, Tudor began to differentiate between composers who filled him with life and those who left him cold -- the focus of his repertory became crystallized. The main criterion for his choices were shaped by the part he would play as interpreter in the composition. He distinguished carefully between having a free choice among prefabricated parts -- generally called aleatoric, as for example, Stockhausen's 'Klavierstück XI' (dedicated, as his 'Klavierstücke V-VIII', to Tudor) -- and indeterminate actions. In the first case, they have a tendency to 'put me to sleep,' whereby pieces that are less limiting led him to say, 'I feel that I'm alive in every part of my consciousness.' The program of these CDs portrays these distinctions." --Frank Hilberg

Title: Three Works For Live Electronics
Label: LOVELY MUSIC
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: LCD 1601
David Tudor was an avant garde pianist (most closely associated with John Cage, also performing Feldman, Stockhausen, Wolff, etc), who became a crucial pioneer in the world of live electronic music in the 1960s, developing custom-built electronic devices. These 2 Lovely Music CDs are the only commonly available recordings of his electronic music. Three Works includes: "Pulsers" a work from 1976, exploring the world of rhythms created electronically by analog, rather than, digital, circuity. Incorporates a tape of electronic violin work by Takehisa Kosugi. "Untitled": "a series of works composed in the 1970s that were developed through experiments in generating electronic sound without the use of oscillators, tone generators, or recorded natural sound materials."

Title: Neural Synthesis Nos. 6-9
Label: LOVELY MUSIC
Format: 2CD
Price: $26.00
Catalog #: LCD 1602
"Performed by David Tudor; produced and recorded by David Tudor and John D.S. Adams. Binaural and stereo mixes on 2 CDs. This recording combines the art of music, the engineering of electronics, and the inspiration of biology. In it, David Tudor orchestrates electronic sound in ways analogous to our biological bodies' orchestration of consciousness. The performance originates from a neural-network synthesizer conceived and built especially for Tudor. He surrounds this synthesizer with his own unique collection of electronic devices, and in the recording on this CD made for headphone playback, he uses a new binaural technique for translating sound into out-of-head localizations in which sound seems to originate from specific, changing points within a space around the listener."

Title: Bandoneon! (A Combine)
Label: MICROCINEMA
Format: DVD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: MC 1080DVD
"In 1966 ten New York artists and thirty engineers and scientists from Bell Telephone Laboratories collaborated on a series of innovative dance, music and theater performances, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, held in October at the 69th Regiment Armory, New York City. The artists included were John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Öyvind Fahlström, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor and Robert Whitman. Archival material has been assembled into ten films, each of which reconstructs the artists' original work and uses interviews with the artists, engineers and performers in documentaries that illuminate the artistic, technical and historical aspects of the work. Bandoneon! (a combine) is David Tudor's first full concert work as a composer. Tudor played the bandoneon as the input into a complex sound and visual modification system that moved sound from speaker to speaker and controlled lights and video images, creating a work that animated the entire Armory space. This DVD documents the performance with film and vintage photographs as well as interviews with the performers, engineers and Tudor's fellow composers. Bandoneon! is the third film in the 9 Evenings series from E.A.T. and ARTPIX. This rare and historical film was produced by Billy Klüver and Julie Martin of E.A.T. and directed by Julie Martin." Region 0, all region format; 39 minutes.

Title: Rainforest (Versions I & IV)
Label: MODE
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: MODE 064CD
2007 repress, originally released 1998. Two versions of Tudor's electronic environment masterpiece, the first performed in 1968 by Tudor and Takehisa Kosugi for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company; the 2nd is an electro-acoustic environment from 1973. "'Rainforest' blends music and sculpture by placing music in space in extraordinary ways. The idea is to channel electronic output through an object rather than through the usual device, a loudspeaker. Dozens of unique and unlikely objects are suspended from the ceiling at about ear level. The space is filled with gentle sounds given off by the vibration of the hanging objects via a contact microphone, fed back into his controls for filtering and mixing, and then redistributed out again to some other object or a conventional loudspeaker. The recycling phenomenon that takes place makes the entire electro-acoustic apparatus of 'Rainforest' an 'ecologically balanced sound system.' The result is a timeless sonic environment full of rich textures offering the listener an infinite variety of aural densities and spatial effects."
