2004 release. Part of the Sundazed

series, generally only available mailorder thru the Sundazed web site. "Led by respected avant-garde musician Joseph Byrd, The United States Of America was a seething, fiercely experimental blend of Pink Floyd, John Cage and The Velvet Underground, tempered by the icy yet lovely vocals of Dorothy Moskowitz. Here are two previously unissued versions of works-in-progress, both cut live in the studio by this seminal psychedelic combo that also featured violinist Gordon Marron, bassist Rand Forbes and drummer Craig Woodson. 'Hard Coming Love,' raw and rocking here, would become a highlight of the band's only album. The originally-unissued 'Osamu's Birthday' -- whose eerie vocal track was sung phonetically backwards by Moskowitz, then reversed for other-worldly effect -- is sung here by Moskowitz... forwards. The effect is still shattering."

"Fueled by the avant-garde sonic ammo of keyboardist/composer Joe Byrd and the haunting vocals of Dorothy Moskowitz, the United States Of America found a way to permanently hardwire space-age electronic music to the heart of rock and roll on their highly desirable, self-titled 1968 debut. Byrd's kaleidoscopic musical excursions and Gordon Marron's searing violin orbit around the icy vocals of Moskowitz, who -- with a passing resemblance to early Jefferson Airplane belter Signe Anderson -- remains the group's center, steady as a rock. This heady mind-trip is reissued with the participation of both Byrd and Moskowitz, sports 10 amazing bonus cuts, comprehensively fascinating liner notes by Byrd, himself, and -- newly mastered from the original analog source tapes -- has never sounded better."

"The United States of America, led by respected modern classical avant garde musician Joseph Byrd, cut a wide swath through the 1968 world of rock, just then comfortably settling into its backwoods dreams of country-rock to find the debut U.S.A. album howling like an infant terrible on its front doorstep. At the center of the U.S.A.'s fiercely experimental universe were the icy-cool vocals of the beautiful Dorothy Moskowitz, keeping this tumultuous sound from spinning out of control in every direction. Almost predictably, the U.S.A. disbanded before it could record a second album, but its brilliant, self-titled effort was certainly one for the ages." Housed in a manilla envelope-style outer jacket.
