Title: Two Point Two
Label: 12K
Format: 2CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: 12K 1026CD
"Over the course of 7 and 4 years, respectively, 12k and LINE have been at the forefront of minimalist digital music. They have established themselves not only as a home for some of the most important contemporary electronic sound artists but also as labels who are not afraid to introduce new artists and give them the opportunity to create a unique and recognized voice for themselves in the crowded world of electronic music and sound art. With the release of Two Point Two, the continuation of 12k and LINE's joint double CD series, the labels showcase their own aesthetics and highlight some of the current and future artists that will be at the forefront of their release schedules for the next year. Packaged in a stark-white double-CD digipack that features the design and photography of Taylor Deupree and Richard Chartier, all of the tracks on Two Point Two are previously unreleased. CD1 shows 12k's current interest in melodic and acoustic instrument-based electronic compositions and experiments in deconstructed rhythmic structures. CD2, the LINE disc, continues the documentation of conceptual and installation work by artists who explore contemporary and digital minimalism and the borders of silence."

Title: Blueprints
Label: 12K
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: 12K 1039CD
"Over the past 10 years, 12k has established itself as a label on the forefront of minimalist music and has become home to some of the most important artists of the genre. It is a label that time and time again has not been afraid to release debut albums from new artists, drawing on the new energy they interject into both the scene and the label. With the release of Blueprints, 12k presents 2 tracks each from 6 artists new to its roster and showcases some of the new sounds and influences that will carry the label into its 10th year (2007). The artists on Blueprints span the globe and offer a variety of sound that both compliments and expands on the style that 12k has become known for. Christmas Decorations tread a fine line between organic and electronic, experimental and rock music. Seaworthy: their compositions often blur the lines of conventional categorisation with elements traditionally considered part of 'indie' or 'post' rock blended with processed musical and field recordings usually associated with electronic artists. Autistici: Autistici's music incorporates a wide range of sources and inspirations including obsessional microsounds, textural orchestration, near silence and field recordings. Jodi Cave explores the potentials of home-made, MaxMSP-based software, to extend, augment and re-contextualize acoustic sound in composed works and improvised performance. Pjusk has an electronic sound that is deep, dark and pulsing that evokes a narrative and sense of other-worldliness. Leo Abrahams: using a laptop to process his guitar in real time, he creates music which contains elements of folk, electronica and contemporary classical."

Title: Neo.Pop Part Four
Label: 1ST DECADE RECORDS (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: 1ST 009CD
"Quo Vadis, Neo.pop? The fourth part of one of the most successful compilation series can be seen as a logical consequence, consistent with the high standards it sets itself. Neo.pop was never conceived as a temporary trend expression, and it becomes ever more apparent that Neo.pop serves as a focus in which the most diverse forms of modern, electronic music attain exposure. For the first time, this compilation is intentionally not a Mix-CD, to avoid the restrictions of the necessary BPM's. This allows for space that the quality of the individual songs deserve. Quo vadis, Neo.pop? The final destination is still open, but this is sure on the right road." Features: Swayzak, Dub Pistols, Arsenal, Superpitcher, My Robot Friend, Warren Suicide, JunghanB, Turntablerocker, Kleinkariert, Cosmonauts of Innerspace.

Label: 1ST DECADE RECORDS (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: 1ST 013CD
"Another year has passed. Much has happened, music is in motion. The fifth edition of the compilation series offers more than an overview of the latest sounds. At the basis it's still electronic music but the range of music has grown considerably. So it's no surprise that a double CD was released. What do we make of it? One is for sure -- popular music can always reinvent itself. After all it' s neo.pop." Artists include: TV On The Radio, Chromeo, Cycle, Tiefschwarz feat. Chikinki, Slam, Tenfold Loadstar, Zweiekkenkreis, Andre Kraml feat. Schad Privat, Northern Lite, Electronicat, Junghans, Sickly Kid, Sid Le Rock, T. On the B-side, Toby Dreher together with Andre Crom on the percussions push the limits, and as a bonus you will find the Fusion edit 2tons per square meter by Dreher&Smart. Title: 430 West Presents: Back To The Rhythm
Label: 430 WEST
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: CEPT 005CD
"First there was 430 West Presents Detroit Calling, the much loved techno mix masterpiece that spawned the classic 'Blackwater' by Octave One. Now there is 430 West Presents Back To The Rhythm. And it's very special. The credits say it is mixed by Lone Burden of Octave One fame under his KSR alter ego. As with all things KSR it is abrasive tech house rather than start techno. What the credits don't say is that with needles blazing across the turntables and funk sparking inside the Pro-Tools the Detroit wonder kid manipulates and teases disparate tunes into one glorious Motor City jam. Along the way he gives us a preview of upcoming Octave One single 'Someday' (with a startling KSR remix naturally), throws in a never before released remix of Inner City's 'Big Fun' that will make the hairs on your neck stand up, includes Underground Resistance's amazing 'Transition', checks out 'Birth Of 3000' by Los Hermanos (DJ Rolando in disguise) and also comes on strong with a whole pile of unreleased 430 West back and new catalogue." Artists also include: Al James, Randolph Paul, Gerald Mitchell, Random Noise Generation, Perception.

Title: Poplife Presents: Poplife Sucks
Label: 541 (BELGIUM)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: 541 502368CD
Belgium's highly-acclaimed Poplife party celebrates its 10th anniversary with the mix compilation, Poplife Sucks. The Poplife party started off in 1998 as a reaction to the sterile house and techno beats at parties during those times. It became a chaotic mix of presumably un-mixable styles; rock, pop, disco, new wave, electro, and far more. The sound was completely refreshing and the crowd immediately loved it. The DJs back then were Mo & Benoeli (later The Glimmers) and Stephen De Waele (later 2 Many DJs). Saying that the mash-up phenomenon started off at Poplife is maybe overstated; on the other hand, the English music Bible The Face described Poplife as "a hysteric superjam of unreconcilable styles mashed-up into a relentless groove." Aha. Whatever you call it, Poplife Sucks is an all-inclusive party celebrating dance music across all genres that doesn't discriminate. This mix includes big, classic tracks next to hot and fresh new burners that will become future-classics. Tracks selected by The Glimmers and Olivier Tjon, edited by The Entrepreneur. Artists include: Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Moloko, The Chaplin Band, Adriano Celentano, Japan, Jacknife Lee, Brandon Cooke & Roxanne Shante, Simian Mobile Disco, Manu Dibango, Kid Frost, Liquid, Liquid, The Time, The Glimmers, Liasons Dangereuses, 16 Bit, Erotic Dissidents, Material, Switch, and Aphex Twin.

Some well known artists out of the 8 Bit/Cècille league strike back and with these solid and deep grooving weapons you have a very good DJ package in your hands. Nils Nürnberg from Germany provides us another liquid, deep driving track, very genteel, while Lemos from Greece returns with his curious kind of experimental and everlasting tech-house. The bargain is built by Mr. Bearweasel from the UK, well known from Audiofly's record label Supernature, his classic house contribution will shake all booties on the dancefloor. Label: A BRUIT SECRET (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: ABS 201CD
A series of 8 duets, featuring: Taku Unami/ Norman D.Mayer; Masafumi Ezaki/Hugo Roussel; Utah Kawasaki/Jean-Philippe Gross ; Yasuo Totsuka/Quentin Dubost; Masahiko Okura/Sharif Shanaoui; Yoichiro Shin/Olivier Brisson; Ami Yoshida/Alfredo Costa Monteiro; Kazushige Kinoshita/Fabrice Eglin. "Depicted on record is an a-topics meeting in music in the open space between two scenes. The 8 duets open on experimental proposals: 8 improvised musical meetings in the suspended time of mail exchanges. East to the West, Japan & France. 1+1 = 3. The musical arithmetic differs from what we were taught at school. Each duet creates a sonic hybrid with a third element born out of the encounter of the musical identities. From: / To: found its source in the will of 5 labels Hibari / Abruitsecret / Fragment / Pricilia / Vertpituite to gather young musicians from Lebanon, France and Japan playing in the fields of electroacoustic and improvised music. To renew them."

Title: New Town
Label: A.i. (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: AI 005CD
"In the space of the last 12 months, Ai has become one of the most talked-about, relevant and collectable of independent labels anywhere in the world today. With an audio-visual aesthetic heavily rooted in originality and an appreciation of classic electronic music and design in all its forms; followers of Warp, Skam, Toytronic and the like have been scrambling round each of its limited releases with glee. Originally conceived as a tribute to the 'sound of Crawley', New Town is a simply devastating collection of electronic tracks for the dancefloor. Following his hugely influential EP Piece of Mind, THE record at Sven Vath's infamous Cocoon nights currently, Claro Intelecto finally returns with two brand new cuts: the dense, punishing electroid mashup of 'Delete', and the Rhodes-infused Drexciyan chill of 'Breathless'. Claro has been cited by many as the finest producer of electroid/house hybrids on the scene at the moment -- a British producer who can at long last rank amongst the most decorated Detroit operators -- typifying precisely why he has been in so much demand over the last few months. FZV, another core artist, displays a relentless IDM construction that spins with the sort of dark strokes that fans of Bola and early Skam will adore -- a mangle of crunch and strings designed to evoke and terrify. Joe Franks, meanwhile, summons the spirit of Mantronix through a series of filters and flangers that digest the squashed drums and appregiated basslines into a factory monster: tough, considered, flawlessly executed electro sizzles of the loveliest kind. SWF's beat engineering comes straight outta Company Flow's rulebook -- deep structures and a blue, crisp crunch of uncompromising beats to draw in a machine-led future on the gargantuan 'True'. With uplifting motor-city house chords shimmering on Andy Freer's 'Super Galaxo', ADJ's mangled machinery evoking EP7-era Autechre brilliance and the Carl Craig/69 vibes assembled on T.R.I.P.'s 'Donald Plays Techno', New Town deploys a heavyweight assault through the ages of electronic music -- past, present and future."

Title: Station
Label: A.i. (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: AI 007CD
"Station stands alone -- offering a kind of closure to previous compilations conceived by Ai records, it's not so much a concept album, more of an attitude -- Station as a place leading somewhere new, motion and stasis, at once urban and yet suggesting other destinations, new locations. A truly international base of artists bless each track with unique musical criteria and direction -- from urban mind funk through electro to purest pop. Ai's typical attention to graphic detail brings the sleeve's hexagonal patterns into allusive focus -- in the detuned melodies of Welk from Steve Hyland's 'Normal' and Praveen's 'Small Clues' -- evidence of a generation reared on the shamanic pastoralism of the Boards of Canada. However, we've learnt to expect diverse terrain from Ai -- the label's EP stars of 2003 continue to develop their sound -- Yellotone's Simon Harding drops the Channel One influenced digital steppa 'Dubbly More', while Michael Manning runs it down with some Bola-esque percussive voodoo. From the new recruits there's classic pop too -- West Australian Pablo Dali offers pristine indie-tronic strums and sways, from comparative Swiss veterans Sinner Dc -- a vocal tune with strings and a stroboscopic psychedelic purity to entrance and rescue early Air fans. From Italy, Tin-Tole-Lata blur the divide between electronic and acoustic with aplomb, dreamlike melodies play over crisp beats. Icelander's Traject -- now signed to the super-cool Spezial material imprint -- traverses a glacial, isolated place. Intonamori provides an unguent, welcoming lullaby for the synapses, while Ascoltare and Sofalofa achieve great things with chiming melodic vibes and deep acoustic drums, processed in their own inimitable style. Its left to Ai's own Puerto Rican-Miami connection, Chris Roman's 214 project to bring the boom to this album -- reared on classic bass, and it really shows. From The Outside asks listeners to submit to the get on down and party with a dose of classic Detroit inflection. Plain to see why Microlux have snapped up his debut album. Station provides a sense of the diversity this critically lauded label has made its watchword, never content with mere stasis -- looking ahead for the next destination with what may be termed wanderlust. A concentrated dose of the right stuff."

Title: Sampler 06
Label: A.i. (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: AI 015CD
"2006 sees Ai start the year with a stunning new compilation, this time in the form of a limited edition 12" vinyl picture disc (500 copies only) and sampler priced CD. The album spotlights eight new signings to the UK label, all of whom indicate 2006 should prove as spectacular a year for Ai devotees as 2005. The Ai garb fits Rootsix perfectly, judging by the gleaming electro-house of 'Just One of Those Things,' and Biologic and Pathic (John Cranmer) sound equally at home on their respective tracks 'Crystal Violet' and 'Triangulation,' where dramatic washes and mellow tones drape over bubbly beats and churning electrofunk. Sensiva (Russian born Artem Galukhin) adds a slippery hip-hop strut to his spacey '44100 th Galaxy' while Tomcats In Tokyo (French duo Fabrice Rey and Fabrice Marsaud) build 'Telophasic Céphalee' into a driving mass of rumbling beats and blistering squelches. Only Moonjean's 'Someday My Prints Will Come' departs dramatically in style (though that shouldn't surprise too much, given that she identifies Glen Campbell, Bread, and The Carpenters as influences). Michigan-based Jeanie Moon-Gatrops creates a lovely setting from marimba, synths, acoustic guitar, and her own treated voice, in a style that recalls Melodic more than Ai. No matter how similar or dissimilar their material, the new recruits are concerned less with inciting revolutions than in perpetuating Ai's rep for quality production, and in that regard they succeed admirably."

Label: A.i. (UK)
Format: LP
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: AI 022LP
"This release brings to a close a series of EPs from the three artists featured on this picture disc. The disc itself is something you will have never seen before and should amaze and surprise. This final release in the dot series EPs brings Ai's color series to a close and serves up two tracks from each of the three artists behind the solo EPs. The Third Man opens proceedings on a peak-time electro tip with 'Circadian Rhythms,' a track underpinned by a dark growling bass line that will get your internal organs rattling and do some serious damage to your speakers. Najem Sworb is up next with 'Rodstac,' a mellow introduction to the EP with bubbling electroid vocals, playful synths and washes of filtered sound all wrapped around a brooding percussive hook reminiscent of Plastikman's 'Spastik.' Plant 43's closer for side A, 'Warehouse Window,' delivers a superb contrasting cut based around his trademark melodies and subtle electronics. Sounds like a snapshot of electro's past, present and future. Influences: Drexciya, ERP/Convextion, Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance, and Kraftwerk." 400 only, pressed on clear, polka-dotted vinyl.

Title: Sampler Zero Eight
Label: A.i. (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $9.00
Catalog #: AI 023CD
"Due in part to satisfy the requests for CD-based material, Ai's next full-length offering is a sampler showcasing the breadth of talent and styles signed to the label's roster. Deep, dubby techno is represented on 'Teranidian,' the LP's opener and the final track from Najem Sworb's critically-acclaimed debut EP from late 2007. Plant43's Drexciyan-tinged electro is up next in the shape of the title track from his Grey Sky Cracks EP before we move swiftly onto the The Third Man's warm techno journey along the 'A14.' Hot on the heels of his first full-length opus, the midpoint of the LP is handed over to Datassette; firstly with 'Damage Report,' his futuristic take on machine funk and then the medieval tones of 'Pluck,' a track akin to dropping a court lyre player into a modern day recording studio and allowing him to tinker merrily. Electronica is where the label first made its mark and the latter half of the sampler shows that while recent releases have had more of structured dancefloor feel, this genre is still very much part of the label's repertoire. Michael Manning delivers a pair of previously-unreleased tracks both of which have a strong string content although vary in their approach with 'Center of the Universe' being a full scale orchestral affair with complementary electronics, whereas 'Release' gently works the strings between broken beat and game-like patterns. Strings also play a part in Sinner DC's 'Summer 57,' a distorted electro workout sounding like a slowed-down version of Underworld's 'Rez' and another brand new track exclusive to this release. The LP is then finally brought to a close with the ambient electronica of Michael Manning's 'Lost Aberrant Dragonfly,' the oldest cut on the sampler coming from his earlier EP of the same name."

Label: ACCIDENTAL (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: AC 007CD
"You Are Here is a collection of tracks released on Matthew Herbert's Accidental, Soundslike and Lifelike labels from their 3 year history. Initially the three labels were just a way of separating the myriad guises of Herbert. So, Accidental became home to Radio Boy, Lifelike the home of Doctor Rockit and Soundslike the home of Herbert. The label soon attracted a following and demos began to come in. From these came the first releases for the label that weren't produced by Matthew Herbert. The first of these was Phil Parnell's Barcelona EP, the title of which is included here. The next artist was The Soft Pink Truth, a side project of Drew Daniel, one half of Californian experimentalists Matmos. His debut album Do You Party? was released in February 2003 on Lifelike. Other artists on You Are Here are John Matthias, 8 Doogymoto, and Shelby Gaines. Also exclusive tracks from Ian Vine, International Space Station, Pete Stollery and NB."

Title: Gnawa Home Songs
Label: ACCORDS CROISES (FRANCE)
Format: CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: AC 117CD
"The village of Tamesloht is a holy place in the arid lands south of Marrakech. In the moonlight, its walls resound with evocation of protective gnawa spirits. Between the call to prayer and the humming of insects, its sound universe is inhabited by sub-Saharan Africa and age-old migrations. This intimate tribute to the power of an ancient tradition divests the healing melodies of their ritual drumming. Instead, Gnawa Home Songs shines the spotlight on a number of exceptional soloists -- stirring vocalists or virtuoso players of the three-stringed guembri lute. Listen in as the old masters Hamid Kasri (who, incidentally, has played with Joe Zawinu) and Amida Boussou join forces with young stars such as Hassan Boussou, founder of the band Séwaryé. Beautifully packaged, this is a unique document of an extraordinary living tradition."

Title: Project Bicycle
Label: ACHE (CANADA)
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: ACHE 025CD
"Eleven electronic / electro-acoustic artists from eight countries unify to pay homage to what listeners of BBC Radio 4's You and Yours radio program have voted as the most significant invention since 1800, beating computers, the internet, and even the combustion engine with more then half the total votes. The concept is simple: Give a handful of today's most progressive sound designers only one sample to work with. They are able to manipulate this sample in any way they choose, but their entire song must be composed entirely from the single sound byte. The supplied sample is a stuadio recording of a bicycle, recorded by Jesse Gander at The Hive Studios in Vancouver. This gives equal importance to the materials as well as the method used in Project: Bicycle. This, along with the beautifully written essay on bicycle riding and it's social, environmental, and physical benefits by Green Party Candidate, Sean Orr, offers a deeper concept to the project. With the inevitable threat of peak oil in our not too distant future, it is time we opened the lines of communication to other forms of energy and transportation. Each artist has chosen to tackle the project uniquely, embracing his own particular style. Whether it's the playful, electrifying outbursts of Sun Ok Papi K.O's 'Pizza Boy's Bike'(Belgium) and Aelters' 'Roulé Brouillé' (France), or the smoother approaches of Wobbly's 'Flee You' (USA), and Romanhead's 'Bicycle Work' (UK), the various techniques in composition and style offer an incredibly dynamic listen given Project: Bicycle's strict guidelines." Featuring: Aelters, Jab Mica Och El, Sun Ok Papi K.O., Secret Mommy, DJ Elephant Power, TU M', Romanhead, Uska Niko, Greg Davis, Wobbly, Jason Forrest.

Title: Ye Olde Barn Compilation
Label: ADDICT RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: ADDICT 004CD
"Depending on the eye of the beholder, the barn in East Troy, Wisconsin was complete idioticy or beautiful art. We at Addict Recordings saw it as both. For five beautiful summers, the Barn served as a drawing board for a community of musicians from around the world. Artists like Venetian Snares, Bogdan, Neon Hunk, Doormouse, Emotional Joystick, Stunt Rock and the famed band MEAT used it as a creative testing field; bouncing around insane musical ideas to a greatly appreciative audience. Boats were burned, whole cars flipped, smashed and destroyed. Countless wanderers thrown into mud, ears turned 180 degrees by the foreign sounds. Flash forward, summer 2003, and the barn has seen better days. The property owners are seeing some legal, and this is our way to help. All tracks are donations, and original unreleased music. Each artist was asked to make a song dedicated to the barn, about the barn. We think it's a pretty amazing collection of what has become known as 'midwest hardcore'. In the end, all profits go directly to the owners, and you get a damn fine listen. Limited to 500 worldwide."

Compiling a selection of material sourced from various American independent hip hop labels, many of which are amongst some of the most underground and low key hip hop production outfits America knows today. Operating on the fringes of the genre, constantly defying the conventions and restraints of stylistic boundaries these labels and artists have redefined the way hip hop is perceived today and will be in the future. The two collection's document the next level of hip hop and a new wave in the defiance of a system. Genre's are crossed and redefined with lyrical experimentation, production is sparse, raw, minimal and often mechanical, pushing the concept and approach to hip hop production into entirely new territories. Title: Another Country 2
Label: AGENDA (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: AGN 008CD
"Another Country 2 takes us deeper into the heartland of American 'alt.country' -- a place of otherworldly harmonies, stripped-down arrangements, plangent guitars, clanking banjos and a short-story anthology's-worth of intriguing narratives. Not one artist here emanates from Nashville, though the rest of the country is well represented. There are beautiful, harmony-laced porch hymnals from New York's elegantly melodious Cub Country and Georgia's disarmingly intimate Azure Ray. There's heart-swelling, arcane boogie from Brooklynites The Boggs and died-in-the-wool Southerners Iron & Wine. Elsewhere, Arizonan legends Giant Sand chip in with a slice of beauteous desert-flecked country rock, while North Carolina's superstar-elect Ryan Adams and Austin's bucolic troubadours Okkervil River tip their feed caps toward Dylanesque folk-rock. Another Country 2 showcases country music, then, but not so as you'd notice. These are songs that, irrespective of genre, you'll simply want to inhabit. Like a tumbledown cottage or a beloved pair of boots; they have a lived-in charm that's truly beguiling."

"Live recording at the Rotonda del Pellegrini, Milan, January 21st, 1959 featuring John Cage, Morton Feldman, Juan Hidalgo, Leopoldo La Rosa, Walter Marchetti. Among all the events involving John Cage during the long stay in Europe that followed his controversial appearance at Darmstadt Ferienkurse in September 1958, the concert he held in Milan on January 21st perhaps represents a less well known episode. The reasons that justify the necessity to present here, after forty years, the complete recording of the concert, and that restore the measure of the exceptionality of this rare document can be summarized in the contrasting reactions catalyzed by this event. Featuring Cage's intervention both as composer and performer of one's own work as well as of two piano pieces by Morton Feldman, the concert at Pellegrini's 'Rotonda' may be considered the first event of experimental music in Europe in which the presentation of American and European composers consciously acted on an agreeing and equal aesthetic horizon. Both the set of pieces in programme and the peculiar environmental frame of the concert were fit intentionally for emphasizing the radical aesthetic conceptions of the compositions performed. Cage's choice was highly representative and relapsed into those works of his recent catalogue that more than any other was pushed on the way of a conscious neutralization of compositive intention. The Duo which opens the concert significantly consists of the parts for flute and viola excerpted from his celebrated 'Concert for Piano and Orchestra'. Cage then completed his participation in the concert, besides performing some unspecified numbers from 'Music for Piano' (the piece that showed him the possibility to de-conceptualize the resort to chance operations transcribing the paper pointal imperfections), also performing two of the three 'Piano Pieces' with which Morton Feldman, in 1954, was reconverted to conventional notation, while preservrarifyingame rarefying qualities his music formerly acquired by means of the systematic adoption of aleatory graphic notations. Juan Hidalgo, Walter Marchetti, and Leopoldo La Rosa on the contrary premiered six compositions purposefully written for this occasion, employing aleatory procedures for the first time in their works. Both Hidalgo and Marchetti wrote a trio and a quartet firstly following a common notational stylization, which provides the spatial distribution of a prearranged, but reversible, sequence of intervals within a flexible temporal grid, structured fixing each subsequent time limit. Curiously, those procedures forerun the so-called 'temporal-brackets' technique that Cage will employ, at the end of a long creative career, in time-structuring his famous 'Number Pieces'. The cyclical alternation between the instrumentally always-heterogeneous ensemble works and the slight sonority of the solo piano pieces, was presumably regulated, in fact, by an evident principle of symmetry. More than constituting a restriction, a so rigid performing frame plausibly acted as an efficacious form of conjugation in strict connection with the environmental space. Exploiting the circular architectonic structure of the concert hall all the performers were spread abroad among the audience, with the piano exactly in the centre. According to Cage, in the integration of the physical space into the performing process one can recognizes a basic requisite that consented to transform music composition in an unforeseen event in which the physical separation of the performers allows the sounds to issue from their own centers and to interpenetrate in a way which is not obstructed by the conventions of European harmony and theory about relationships and interferences of sounds. At a distance of only few months since Cage described with these words -- in one of the three lectures given in Darmstadt then collected under the title 'Composition as Process' -- one of the distinctive features of his conception of an experimental work, the concert at Pellegrini's 'Rotonda' perhaps represented the first concrete opportunity to verify and extend these same concepts. So, not only the concert at Pellegrini's 'Rotonda' was characterized by the performance of works that accepted the indeterminacy as their own operative premise, but also for having been a collective event in which the individual contribution of each composer, the strict succession of the works without solution of continuity, the dislocation of the sound sources in the space, mutually acted as autonomous elements, but interrelated in the comprehensive design of their concordant dimensioning in the environment. The edition includes a 36 pages essay with photos and full documentation of the event."

Second volume of the Avant MarghenVocSon series, numbered edition of 80 copies; last copies, volume 1 is sold out. "This luxury boxset edition actually includes the second group of 7 LPs issued for the VocSon series:
       1) Brion Gysin's Poems Of Poems LP. First 80 copies from the original 630 copies edition issued in 1998. Very early poetical experimentation recorded in 1958 at the Beat Hotel, Paris. The origins of cut-up are documented in this radical edition. You will experience why Brion Gysin was a strong reference for Henri Chopin and Bernard Heidsieck.
       2) Bernard Heidsieck 50/70 LP. First 80 copies from the original 480 copies edition issued in 1998. The third Bernard Heidsieck LP issued by Alga Marghen draws the picture of two specific moments on artistic creation: the 1950s and the 1970s. 3) Jose Luis Castillejo The Book of i's LP. First 80 copies from the original 240 copies edition issued in 1998. Very limited and immediately sold out edition of Castillejo conceptual recordings. Jose Luis Castillejo books always included him among the Concrete Poems and were regarded as very special graphic creations. A deep exploration of his abstract and radical poetry will lead to a more conceptual and philosophical understanding as this LP clearly states.
       4) Gil J. Wolman L'anticoncept LP. Edition of 80 copies with new labels. Edition of Gil J Wolman megapneums, or the beginning of the whole sonic adventures. If Gysin was a strong conceptual influence for the Henri Chopin and Bernard Heidsieck generation, Wolman was showing them the sonic direction. Just with the use of the breath and respiration, his Megapneums had the same intensity of the electronic manipulation that will make Chopin's audiopoems so radically new and uncompromising. This LP also include excerpts from Wolman sound-film L'Anticoncept from 1952.
       5) Isidore Isou Poèmes Lettristes 1944-99 LP. Edition of 80 copies with new labels. Historical edition by Isidore Isou. This is the first record LP ever published by the father of Lettrism. Poems from 1944 to 1999 including a breath taking improvisation, some 1970s recordings by Maurice Lemaitre and an early, primitive and incredible performance by Francois Dufrene. Recorded at Isou's apartement in 1999.
       6) Juan Hidalgo Una Voz LP. First 80 copies from the original 323 copies edition issued in 2000. First ever ZAJ LP record! An historical recording of Juan Hidalgo 'Una Voz,' including concrete sound interventions by Walter Marchetti. A large size booklet with the transcription in English and Spanish of the spoken text is also included. Capital!
       7) Arrigo Lora-Totino Fonemi LP. First 80 copies from the original 345 copies edition issued in 2000. Arrigo Lora-Totino is probably best known for having been the editor of the famous sound poetry anthology issued by Cramps Records in the 1970s with the title 'Futura.' But only a few know about his sound poetry production. Following Henri Chopin's idea that poetry is above all an expression of the body through its own language, Lora-Totino started his important poetic practice in 1965 with 'Fonemi,' a sound sample of erasure: the reading of a text recorded on tape is filtered through an electronic pulse generator that splits it into small fragments."

Originally issued in an edition of 300 copies, only available with the vinyl edition of the Revue OU LP anthology. This LP includes previously unreleased audiopoems dating from 1965 to 1981.
       7) Ben Patterson A Fluxus Elegy LP. First 80 copies from the original 345 copies edition issued in 2006. This Ben Patterson composition, issued on is based on the basic principles of the polyphonic music of the Bantu tribes of West and Central Africa. First principle: the practice of interlocking individual pitches or tones performed by one person into spaces between other pitches or tones performed by another person, thus alternating pitches or tones of one part with those of another part to create a whole. Second principle: use of cyclical and open-ended forms involving one or more ostinato melodic/rhythmic pattern as a foundation. Third principle: community participation... non-specialists are encouraged to join in long performances with much repetition. Fourth principle: rhythmic complexity with the juxtaposition of double and triple patterns, multiple layering of different patterns, and interaction between a core foundation and improvised parts. And, most important, the family 'ownership' of a specific tone: in the musical culture of these tribes, each ancestral family 'owns' and is responsible for one or more specific tones, which must be sounded at specific points, sequencing with the many other specific tones 'owned' by other families, to create a seamless melody. Ben Patterson made a music based on this information by taking the initials of artists listed in Fluxus: The Most Radical and Experimental Art Movement of the Sixties and encoding them in basic International Morse Code. These 'dots and dashes' were then performed on a Yamaha DJX keyboard (voice pattern setting), connected to a Digitech JamMan Looper (over-dub setting), connected to an Eurorack MX 602A mixer. Front cover reproducing the original score."

The live material has been mixed, edited and mastered by Francisco López. This compilation offers many highlights. There is stunning live action from Merzbow in which Masami Akita sounds as fresh and exciting as ever with a blend of rhythmic noise and low-end rumble. Daniel Menché's live set is done justice here on record without the aid of his totally cathartic stage presence. Shinichiro Okada's contributes a brutal piece of totally raw digital sound. Oren Ambarchi presents a beautiful set of plucked strings over a genswashes of vintage electronics."

"The Altered Consciousness Collection box set of three award-winning documentaries -- Hofmann's Potion, FLicKeR, Hippie Masala -- explores the frontiers of human consciousness and the iconic pioneers who opened the doors of perception. From early LSD research and hypnotic 'dream machines' to the transformational powers of Eastern spirituality, the Altered Consciousness Collection reveals the sub-culture of enlightenment seekers who influenced a generation. Winner of the 2008 Hot Docs Special Jury Prize for FLicKeR. Archives and interviews with counter-culture icons William Burroughs, Aldous Huxley, Timothy Leary, Ram Dass and others. A provocative, insightful, and timely collection. Includes the following three titles: FLicKeR -- In 1961, poet, artist, and beatnik Brion Gysin invented the Dream Machine, a hypnotic light device that induced hallucinations. The Dream Machine enthralled mystics and freethinkers everywhere, with William S. Burroughs claiming that it could 'storm the citadels of enlightenment.' FLicKeR is a riveting documentary that explores the life of Brion Gysin and his quest to transform human consciousness. Hoffmann's Potion -- Timothy Leary rallied a generation to 'tune in, turn on, drop out," but it was Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann's discovery of the LSD elixir, and his experiments on himself, that first revealed the power of this potion for medical research and mental exploration. Featuring interviews with many LSD pioneers, Hoffmann's Potion is an invitation to look at LSD -- and our world -- with a more open, enlightened mind. Hippie Masala -- In the 1960s and 1970s, thousands of hippies journeyed East in the search for enlightenment, free drugs or a 'pure' life. Some stayed for good. Hippie Masala shows aging flower children who, after fleeing Western civilization, found a new way of being in India. 221 minutes. Aspect ratio: 16:9. Key word here is Reduction, a minimal choice of Old School Hardware that was already present in the early days of techno, house and hip-hop. All out of one box! The MPC is the tool that rules and formulates an attitude. Not unlike the Detroit School nowadays, Tolouse Low Trax music just floats, in minimal virtuosity, recorded straight to tape and ignoring any editing technics that are so dominant in modern music production."

Title: African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds...
Label: ANALOG AFRICA (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: AACD 063CD
...From Benin & Togo 70s. Early 2008 release, now fully available; including a 44-page booklet and slipcase packaging. The mission of Analog Africa is clear: searching in dusty warehouses for forgotten music to keep it alive. All tracks have been officially licensed, usually from the artists who label-head Samy Ben Redjeb also met with for detailed research. He conducted 16 interviews in various cities in Benin and Togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the '70s music scene for the booklet which also includes many rare photographs directly received from the artists. Like most modern music in French-speaking West African countries, the music of Benin and Togo was influenced by a few main musical currents: Cuban, Congolese and local traditional music, as well as Chanson Française. Additionally, the geographical location of Benin and Togo -- sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria -- exposed Beninese and Togolese musicians to highlife music. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin's modern music. Benin is the birth place of Vodun (or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), and some of the rhythms used during traditional rituals -- sakpata, sato, agbadja, tchenkoumé and many others -- were fused to soul and Latin music as early as the mid-'60s and later to funk. That fusion is the essence of this compilation. In the late '60s and early '70s, rock and soul music started creeping into the region. In particular, the music of James Brown and Johnny Halladay became immensely popular with university students. It was then that the music scene in Benin really started to take off. What made this musical revolution even more interesting is that most of the musicians could not read music. Often the music they made sounded one semi-tone away from being out of tune, but somehow they always managed to bring all the elements together into something new and exciting. One of the greatest bands of their era, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, who are featured on this compilation, took the Afro sound to another level by showing their musical versatility in many forms. Although they were consciously copying Western artists, they would always inject a dose of psychedelic Afro grooves that would make their music unmistakably Beninese. Their biggest song, "Gbeti Madjro" is believed to have revolutionized the music industry in Benin in the '70s when the country went through a period of political turmoil. The song is full of raw breaks and hypnotic rhythms, as well as screams à la James Brown. After this song, many bands in Benin started screaming on their recordings, hence the title of this compilation. Latin-influenced sounds are present on this compilation, too. Ouidah, a city on the Atlantic coast of Benin, is home to a large Brazilian community, or, as they are called in Benin, "Agoudas." Members of that community are descendents of slaves who returned from Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Their dances and songs are still being performed and fused into the traditional Beninese rituals. That, too, can be heard in modern Beninese music. The proximity of the giant neighbor Nigeria can be heard on the track "Djanfa Magni" which features the amazing trumpeter/ saxophonist Tidjani Koné fronting the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Koné, whose career started in Mali as the founder and band leader of the Rail Band de Bamako, had played with Fela Kuti for a short while, hence the strong Afrobeat influence. There are countless stories to be discovered in the extremely well-researched booklet and the music is truly mind-blowing. So delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic Afro sounds from '70s Benin and Togo and experience the African Scream Contest.

Title: Legends Of Benin
Label: ANALOG AFRICA (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: AACD 065CD
Analog Africa presents Legends Of Benin, a collection of super-rare and highly danceable masterpieces recorded between 1969-1981 by four legendary composers from Benin: Gnonnas Pedro, Antoine Dougbé, El Rego et Ses Commandos and Honoré Avolonto, each with a sound all their own. What you are about to hear is distinctively Benin -- a thick brew of agbadja, soul, cavacha, funk, Afrobeat, and Afro-Latin sounds all mixed in with heavy traditional rhythms. Gnonnas Pedro is the king of modern agbadja: a rhythm hugely popular in Togo, Benin and Ghana, based around three pieces of percussion, each with a different tone. Traditionally a rhythm used during burial ceremonies, Gnonnas adopted and modernized it in the mid-'60s, calling it "Agbadja Modern." The track "Dadje Von O Von Non" was originally recorded in 1966 and is Gnonna's first modern rendition of agbadja. Also featured here is the crazy, kick-ass funk track "Okpo Videa Bassouo" recorded in 1973, as well as the sublimely contagious track, "La Musica en Verité." Honoré Avolonto was one of Benin's most prolific composers, releasing Benin's most successful LP in the late '70s. That album was recorded with Black Santiago, a band fronted by amazing trumpeter Ignace De Souza, another legend, with whom he recorded the Afrobeat track, "Dou Dagbe We." Avolonto has fronted some of Benin's most powerful bands and some of those "partnerships" with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and Les Commandos are presented here. Beware -- killer Afrobeat meets frenetic funk. El Rego et Ses Commandos were responsible for Benin's first Afro-soul-funk track with the support of Ghanean singer, Eddy Black Power. The "Jerk" scene in Benin was triggered by the success of "Feeling You Got," and its infectious accordion riff. "E Nan Mian Nuku" is an Afro-Latin tune combined with a kind of bossa nova, and "Vimado Wingnan" is Benin's most sought-after funk track. Out of all the artists here, Antoine Dougbé is the least known even in Benin, but he created his own style which he dubbed Afro cavacha -- a fantastic mixture of Congolese rhumba, Latin sounds and traditional vodoun rhythms. All of his vinyl releases, especially the ones released on his own Editions Dougbé Antoine label, are incredible and have become some of Africa's most sought-after collector's items. This compilation includes a 44-page, full-color booklet with ultra-rare pictures and detailed biographies. Enjoy the mind-blowing sounds of Benin.

Title: Yasujiro Ozu - Hitokomakura
Label: AND/OAR
Format: 2CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: AND 026CD
"This is the second of a series of label projects pertaining to film directors. The first one was for Andrei Tarkovsky, the third one is currently in progress and pertains to Michelangelo Antonioni's Tetralogy (L'Avventura/La Notte/L'Eclisse/Deserto Rosso). This second release turns its focus upon martirano 's use of 'pillow shots' (i.e. short poetic pauses that appear between the acting segments of his films. The term 'pillow shot' was not coined by Ozu himself, but several years after his passing in the early 1960s by a Japanese journalist who was trying to draw a comparison of the intermediate scenes to 'pillow words' found in traditional Japanese poetry. This is a double CD release with both CDs featuring audio plus a cross-platform compatible PDF booklet containing pillow shots (courtesy of Criterion Collection) and liner notes. Each artist who appears on this release was asked to choose one or more 'pillow shots' to use as inspiration for their pieces. A link to web pages containing a large assortment of pillow shots was provided, and accordingly, the pillow shots were reserved on a first come, first served basis. The artists also watched the films from which the pillow shots came from in order to get a sense of how their chosen pillow shots were employed by Ozu. The sound work featured represents a wide range of artistic approaches, but as always with these projects, the artists were chosen specifically, based on their previous work and on how it might contribute to the collective whole of each project." Artists include: Alejandra & Aeron, Aono Jikken Ensemble, Asuna, Marc Behrens, Keith Berry, Lawrence English, Heribert Friedl, Bernhard Gunter, Haco, John Hudak, Jason Kahn, Hitoshi Kojo, Koura, Dale Lloyd, Yoshio Machida, Roel Meelkop, Kiyoshi Mizutani, Dean Moore (with Michael Shannon), Steve Roden, Sawako, Michael Shannon, Steinbruchel, Taku Sugimoto, Sukora, Toshiya Tsunoda.

Price: $12.00
Catalog #: APTB 003CD
"New York: Various Artists is a compilation of musicians who lived in New York during the summer of 2000. It is a record of a community of electronic musicians that existed in the city at that time. Apartment B met these artists in various ways: primarily school, email, and live performances. Many of the artists have a connection to Invisible Cities -- a free evening of electronic music that took place every Wednesday at Brownies. Invisible Cities provided perhaps the most identifiable point of coalescence for this community -- outside of Kim's, Other, Etherea, or anyone's bedroom studio. Most of these artists have since moved away, Invisible Cities is long retired, and Brownies will close in August, but we present this record as a souvenir of New York." Label: APESTAARTJE
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: APE 014CD
"Full length CD featuring exclusive tracks by Sebastien Roux, Ausna, Tu m' and Duul_Drv. Four entities brought together under one title to explore the sculptural aspects of air moving through space. Sound, not just as a physical phenomenon, but as an intrinsically musical environment. Sebastien Roux (Paris) contributes two beautifully understated pieces of digitally processed guitar that brittle and burst with a fascinating spectrum of intricate details. Naoyuki Arashi aka Asuna (Tokyo) extends his harmonium through various computer processing in his intensely thick and amazingly hypnotic drone piece 'Plural Rooms'. The duo of Rossano Polidoro and Emiliano Romanelli, Tu-m' (Pescara) continue their adventures in plundered melodic fragmentation with two tracks of stuttering simplicity that are among their catchiest works. Unlike anything, yet instantly familiar Arden Hill aka Duul_Drv (Winnepeg) creates quiet environments where field recordings co-exist with electronics in such a natural way that one wonders if he has done anything at all. Object set, and motion."

Label: ARCANIA INTERNATIONAL
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: ARCANIA 001CD
Repress of the 1st volume in this series (Volumes 2 & 3 are currently o/p). "Aliens Psychos & Wild Things Volume 1 is 1964-1969 garage punk and psychedelia from the Tidewater region (Norfolk, VA. Beach, etc.) of Virginia. Seven of the songs on the disc were licensed from Frank Guida, known for his #1 hits with Jimmy Soul and Gary 'U.S.' Bonds. Here his unique sound is applied to garage bands. Notable among songs never before available to the public is one by The Banana. Their take on The Velvet Underground's 'There She Goes Again' is the first documented cover of a VU song. Recorded in a tent by some G.I.s during the Vietnam war in 1967! All told, seven of the cuts are previously unissued. Now people everywhere can hear The Swinging Machine, feel The Heart Attacks, see The Wild Thing. Some of these original micro press 45s go for sums well into the upper hundreds of dollars... when they can be found. Going on 40 years, that is almost never. 16-page booklet. 26 songs. 69 minutes of music."

Title: Aliens Psychos & Wild Things Volume Fore
Label: ARCANIA INTERNATIONAL
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: ARCANIA 008CD
"Fore -- that's Volume 4 if you're counting. Arcania's Aliens series is primarily known for illuminating the shadow world of Virginia's mid-to-late '60s garage and psychedelic bands. The last Vol. (it's been almost 5 years) included half a dozen cuts from outside of VA. This is the reverse of that. Only half a dozen of the tracks on Fore are from the Old Dominion State. The roots of proto-psychedelia are to be heard on this compilation's first two tracks. Hollywood unknowns from 1965, never released until Arcania tracked them down: 'The Wind Blows Your Hair' is the same song recorded by The Seeds two years later. 'Don't Be Afraid' may have a very famous musician on it. 'It' is all in the notes of our 20-page booklet, along with loads of other info. FUZZ is the buzz word for this release, but there is some pop and jangle as well. All told, 7 of the 25 songs are previously unreleased. Only one song out of the batch has ever been reissued. Those that came out in the '60s are virtually unknown, even to most collectors. Unknown for now. But here comes Aliens Psychos & Wild Things... Fore! 20-page booklet. 25 songs. 74 minutes of music."

Title: The New Now Sounds Of Today!
Label: ART ISSUES PRESS
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: ART 19701
Subtitled: Songpoems by Twenty-One Contemporary Artists. "Songpoems are a unique 20th-century American artform, created in factory-like recording studios from amateur lyrics solicited through small ads in the backs of comic books and pulp magazines. Promising the possibility of stardom, the small recording companies churned out dozens of vanity recordings each week during their heyday in the 1960s, usually in quantities just large enough to fulfill their contractual obligations. The New Now Sounds of Today! picks up where the songpoem tradition left off. Art issues Press solicited lyrics from 21 contemporary visual artists, primarily from Los Angeles, and commissioned one of the last remaining songpoem companies, Magic Key Productions of Ogden, Utah, to set the lyrics to music. The results exceeded all expectations. From the opening track, John Baldessari's 'New Age Luois Prima' lesson Learn to Draw to the closing number, Jeffrey Vallance's 'Johnny Rotten mutating into Elvis' Tak Sa Mycket (Swedish for 'Thank you very much'), The New Now Sounds of Today! is a hilarious, rollicking, and often surprisingly moving journey through a series of wildly original hybrids between fine-art words and popular musical forms. The elaborate letterpress packaging is designed by renowned underground artist/musician Bruce Licher of Independent Project Press and the bands Savage Republic and Scenic. It is offered in a limited-edition and numbered first pressing of 2000. The New Now Sounds of Today! is both a fine art and record collectable, but is most importantly an exploratory document of the collapsing boundaries between fine art, popular culture, theory, and commerce." Artists include Mike Kelley, The Museum of Jurassic Technology, Jim Shaw, Alexis Smith, The Rev. & Mrs. Ethan Acres, Judy Fiskin, Joe Scanlan, Eleanor Antin, Sharon Ellis, Tamara Fites, Doug Harvey, Robert Heinecken, Steven Hull, Martin Kersels, Dave Muller, Ruben Ortiz Torres, Stephen Prina, Gary Simmons, Pae White.

Title: Transmissions From Sinai
Label: ARTHUR
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: ARTHUR 005CD
"For a while there was a lot of talk around Arthur HQ about the idea of 'life metal'--as opposed to death metal--and how that applied to a lot of the bands we were listening to. These were artists making introspective, expansive metal that stood out as flashes of color in the unified spectrum of blackness that dominates the genre. Think about the sunshine Sabbath jams of Wino's various incarnations, the core-cleansing live rituals of Sunn O))) and most of all, the contemplative rhythms of Om. Om rose from the ashes of long-form drone-metal icons Sleep, and has since produced three albums of thoughtful, minimalist metal composed entirely of bass, drums and vocals. Transmissions From Sinai, the compilation curated by Om's bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros plays like a companion piece to those albums; the band's influences and fellow wanderers united by a deep narrative thread of rhythm, resistance and meditation. Transmissionsopens with Lichens' 'Kopernik Trip Note,' eight minutes of vocal tones flowing like liquid mercury through a haze of keyboard drones. The focus on rhythm is clarified with Linval Thompson's 'Wicked Babylon,' a rocksteady classic from the guy that, in addition to producing endlessly satisfying reggae albums of his own, was also responsible with lacing dub legend Scientist with some of his best rhythms. Grouper's 'Everyone In Turn' is a cascade of vocal melodies underscored by a fog-shrouded piano. The cryptical envelopment continues with Current 93, David Tibet's long-running Gnostic-apocalypse folk project, and is reinforced by acoustic work from former Neurosis guitarist Scott Kelly, the brushed marching drums of Quix*o*tic's 'The Breeze' and Hush Arbor's mournful guitar dirge, 'The Valley.' Om tour-mate Mia Doi Todd marks the midpoint of the journey with the romantic bongo jam 'Night Of A Thousand Kisses,' followed closely by Six Organs of Admittance's shimmering 'Bar Nasha,' one of several previously unreleased songs in this collection. This flows into the narcotic beats of another Om collaborator, Emil Amos in his Holy Sons guise. A counterpoint follows with Pantaleimon's gentle folk, all crisp guitar melodies and cool, clear whispered vocals. From there it's a downhill run through the blissed-out sunshine psychedelia of Grails' 'Acid Rain,' the intricate contortions of Sir Richard Bishop's finger-picked raga 'Almeria,' and a twin blast from two legendary guitar lifers: J. Mascis, performing the previously unreleased 'War' and Wino with a churning anthem of hope, 'Silver Lining.' Transmissions concludes with 'David and Goliath,' a melodica-and-keyboard-drenched fable of resistance and survival from contemporary British reggae outfit Alpha & Omega. Transmissions From Sinaiis a countercultural signpost: a diverse collection of music--from searing life metal through gauzy ambient piano ballads to the heaviest of dub -- that serves as a soothing balm for whatever may ail you in these troubled times."

With pieces by: Finnbogi Pétursson, Franz Pommasl, BJ Nilsen, Jacob Kirkegaard, Mike Harding, Kent Tankred, J. G. Thirlwell, PerMagnus Lindborg, Jana Winderen, Hans Sydow, Brandon LaBelle, Petteri Nisunen/Tommi Grönlund, & an ensemble piece arranged by BJ Nilsen [Hazard]. "What: A sound installation consisting of 12 individual audio works which are presented as a single piece. Where: Any large self-contained space will work. The first event took place at Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2003. Who: Encouraged by disturbances, Swedish artist and curator C M von Hausswolff assembled a collection of 13 artists representing the elite of international sound art. The group consists of sound artists, architects, composers, producers, sculptors, mathematicians and visual artists. The installation was part of a larger event taking place at the Royal Danish Theatre and Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. How: Each player is assigned a frequency range to work with. This process is carried out in situ, each player using a workstation consisting of mixing desk and PA system. All the resulting sounds are then mixed together in the space provided to create a sound installation. Why: The project reveals how space-specific certain frequencies can be, but also how other sounds can be separated from their source and 'thrown' around the space. It also shows how sound 'fits' (or not) into the space provided by exploring the complexities of frequencies and their inter-action. The final mix not only reveals the innate properties of the frequency ranges, but also the possibilities when they are combined. The result is a lively and accessible sound-filled space which can be approached either as a traditional installation, or as a theme park of sound -- fun for all the family and serious students alike."

Format: CD
Price: $12.50
Catalog #: ASH 6.8CD
Freq_out is a sound installation of twelve individual audio works which are presented as a single piece. Each artist is assigned a frequency range with which to work. This process is carried out in situ, each using a workstation consisting of a mixing desk and a PA system. All the resulting compositions are then amplified together in the space to create a sound installation or performance. The project reveals how space-specific certain frequencies can be, but also how other sounds can be separated from their source and "thrown" around the space. The final mix not only reveals the innate properties of the frequencies, but also the possibilities when they are combined. The second freq_out CD after Ash 5.8 (2004) features the usual suspects; curated and conducted by Carl Michael von Hausswolff, freq_out 2 was recorded and performed for Ultima the Oslo Music Festival 2004, by: BJ Nilsen, J. G. Thirlwell, Jacob Kirkegaard, Jana Winderen, Maia Urstad, Kent Tankred, Finnbogi Pétursson, Per Magnus Lindborg, Brandon LaBelle, Franz Pommasl, Mike Harding and Tommi Grönlund & Petteri Nisunen. The recording was made by NOTAM, mixed by BJ Nilsen at The Embassy and mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye Mastering. Much more "ambient" than the spiky, threatening sonic conflict of the first freq_out CD, this second piece is evocative of an utterly still landscape.

Title: London is the Place For Me 2
Label: ASTRALWERKS
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: ASW 35812CD
"London Is The Place For Me 2 continues the fascinating musical exploration of West Indian immigrants to London in the early 1950s, gathering together not only more rare calypso gems, but also kwela, highlife and jazz tracks. The calypso classics include 'Calypso Be' by Young Tiger who throws a hint of jazz legend Cab Calloway into the mix and Lord Kitchener's saucy and hilariously non-PC 'My Wife's Nightie,' in which he bewails his misfortune at having indulged in a one-night stand with a young lady who pays back his amorous advances by stealing his wife's nightie. Beyond the calypso cuts, there's a cool dance groove from the West African Rhythm Brothers' track 'Ominira' that points to the beginnings of ska, some stunningly interwoven drum patterns in 'Ashiko Rhythm' by Ambrose Campbell and an almost Fats Domino-like piano-driven instrumental in 'Nyusamkhaya' by Gwigwi Mrwebi. All in all it's an invigorating and thoroughly enjoyable way to dip your jaded rock'n'roll toes into an almost hidden music that has subsequently had a major impact on popular music and rock in general."

Title: Never the Same: Leave-Taking from the British Folk Revival
Label: ASTRALWERKS
Format: CD
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: ASW 40830CD
1970-1977. "With artists like Damien Rice, David Gray, and Beth Orton, British folk has become fashionable again. But back in the 1970s, it couldn't have been less hip. Back then the public turned its back on folk in favor of the new rock/jazz fusion sound that was springing up. With even Fairport Convention adopting more of a rock edge, the British folk scene found itself shut out by major labels and was forced underground, relegated to specialist folk clubs. Bill Leader, who had mixed records by folk artists Anne Briggs, Davey Graham, Bert Jansch and many others in the 1960s, saw the opportunity to capture this music and started the Leader label for the artists for whom doors were closing everywhere else. Never The Same documents these lost years of British folk captured on Bill Leader's label, when British folk returned to its traditional roots and in so doing produced some of the most deeply affecting music of the era."

Title: Watch How The People Dancing
Label: ASTRALWERKS
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: ASW 41029CD
"This album showcases the reggae music made by Unity Hi-Power, a leading London sound system of the 1980s. It is presented as the next-generation companion to Honest Jons' recent compilation of Trinidadian calypsos, London Is The Place For Me. The mood is more defiant -- a Jamaican secession from London -- with themes of inner-city sufferation running alongside hymns to the dancehall and the herb superb. For the music, only a tiny handful of reggae labels outside Jamaica have sustained such exhilarating originality. Nothing in English reggae comes close. Watch How The People Dancing celebrates a watershed in the transition from classical reggae to ragga which is magnificently unique to London, a music deep inside its own traditions but nodding to US hiphop and house, and pointing to the new English breakbeat." Features tracks from: Selah Collins, Mikey Murka, Errol Bellot, Kenny Knots, Richie Davis, Peter Bouncer, Jack Wilson & Demon Rockers.

Audiomatique was created as a playground for modern techno -- and house music in the broadest sense. The vinyl format splits over two separate 12"s. AM09 is the first Volume 1.1 including three exclusive tracks by newcomer Faktor-X, Adultnapper & Martinez. Faktor-X is Deak Laslo, a newcomer from somewhere near Vojvodina, Serbia & Montenegro. 'Projections' is a superb hypnotizing techno-track with an incredible pumping bassline. Next on is the Adultnapper aka Francis Harris from Brooklyn, NYC who records for his label Matter/:Form, Intrinsic, Sunshine and others. 'Choose' is a clanking song with a manic synth melody. Martinez (Out Of Orbit) contributes a dry and very groovy piece with a tight rhythm construction."

Label: AUDIOMATIQUE (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: AM 016EP
"Adjust your receivers for a special 'Tri-Band' submission on the latest Audiomatique release! Our sixteenth release features three fine artists with three extra-fine exclusive tracks. The highly talented Piet van Dongen opens up the fest. 'Short Term Satisfaction' kicks off with a rather sparse instrumentation, but soon builds up with interesting string sounds which seem to battle against one another. But the slightly dissonant chords work perfectly on a dry rhythmic construction, adding to the dark atmosphere of the track. Next up is another Dutch producer. Darko Esser already released tracks on Veto, Flux, Fingers Ltd. and Wolfskuil. 'Tri-Band' features his new track 'Gold-digger' with a punching kick-drum and nicely floating synths, cascading in an almost trance-like mode. Brian Aneurysm completes the troika. He's been producing for more than ten years. He can look back on releases on labels like Immigrant, Substatic, Ware, Onitor and Poker Flat and of course on his own label, Iron Box. His new track 'Wrong' perfectly rounds off the 'Tri-Band' with a driving beat and a fragile melody and some great tweaking chords in the middle."

Indeed, he produced 'Sleng Teng', the first fully digital Jamaican hit and one of the most-versioned rhythms of all time. After an uneventful youth in Montego Bay, Lloyd 'Jammy' James found himself living a few doors down from King Tubby in the Waterhouse ghetto of western Kingston. The pair became very close and as Tubby's young apprentice, Jammy learned the vital electrical knowledge that is key to operating a sound system. After spending the early 1970s in Toronto, Jammy returned to Jamaica to become the right-hand man at Tubby's legendary studio; he then started recording local talent after receiving encouragement from producers Bunny Lee and Yabby You."

Highlights includes The Tamlins' harmonically excellent rendition of The Undisputed Truth's 'Smiling Faces Sometime' together with their extended version of Nina Simone's take on Randy Newman's 'Baltimore'. There's also Sugar Minott's 'Rub A Dub', General Echo at his unbridled best with the witty 'Drunken Master', a salute to the early Jackie Chan kung-fu epic, Gregory Isaacs' 'Going Down Town' and the Taxi Gang's tongue-in-cheek cut of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean', Dennis Brown and much more. Since the release of the recordings that make up this compilation, Sly and Robbie have ventured into the farthest reaches of sonic exploration, crafting a range of inspiring styles across the globe. But the heart and soul of their music will always be best illustrated by their Taxi sound -- one of the most consistently innovative record labels to ever come out of Jamaica."

Title: All Night Long
Label: AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: AUS 004CD
Aus Music presents a 2CD package that aims to fondly remember the first 20 releases from the label, with a DJ mix of their back catalog by A&R and co-founder (alongside Sideshow) Will Saul (CD2). This compilation also looks forward to the next 20 releases with 13 totally new and exclusive tracks from the core roster, friends of the label, and future artists (CD1). From the live dub of Sideshow through to the layered, undulating techno of Sian via the heartwarming, richly-textured grooves of Lee Jones, Aus' aim has always been to accompany you from dusk 'til dawn -- all night long. CD1 opens with Sideshow's reworking of his collaboration with Cortney Tidwell before Roland Appel eases you into the realms of disco, his guitar licks and piano refrains carrying the torch of live instrumentation forward before Sian, Shur-I-Kan and Brooks turn up the electronic dial while maintaining the disco groove. The mysterious Pearson Sound (an anonymous, core member of the burgeoning dubstep-meets-techno scene) changes up the rhythm and brings his stripped-back yet inherently soulful sound before Appleblim & Ramadanman present their first foray into the world of house. Martyn's P-funk-inspired melody and bass line provides another fresh take on his deliciously broken rhythms. Lawrence reworks Lee Jones' in-demand single "Aria" for the project, which is typically sleek and graceful, leading into the housier section of the album. MyMy deliver one of their trademark melodic bombs and Lee Jones gets uncharacteristically pumping, while Will Saul & Tam Cooper bring the soul and melancholy before Martyn signs off with a potent piece to pull at your heartstrings. Other artists include: Prins Thomas, The Mole, Motorcitysoul, Stimming, Paul St. Hilaire, and Château Flight.

Title: Spire Live - Fundamentalis
Label: AUTOFACT
Format: 2LP
Price: $18.50
Catalog #: FACT 012LP
Spire Live - Fundamentalis is a double LP-only collection of exclusive live tracks recorded at various Spire events held throughout 2005 and 2006. Released in association with U.S. label, Autofact, Touch presents a selection of tracks performed by the main performers of Spire: Fennesz, Philip Jeck, BJNilsen, Charles Matthews and Marcus Davidson. Improvised pieces from Fennesz, BJNilsen and Philip Jeck contrast with a performance by Charles Matthews of a scored composition by Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi, "In Nomine Lucis," and Marcus Davidson's self-penned "Standing Wave," which ends side two with a locked groove. Cut to preserve and enhance the bottom end frequencies, Fundamentalis is not merely a document; the tension between and within the individual pieces is palpable. As the Touch label places it, Fennesz's set "...evokes the rolling centuries in all their pain and beauty, leaving us at once becalmed and energized, but never oppressed under the weight of time." Electronics breathe new life not only into the organ, but also into the setting. But a new technological successor does not mean replacement. Ultimately, it's the majestic sound of the organ, so steeped in centuries of tradition that one remembers above all else. Spire is one of the most innovative projects around, drawing on the full canon of organ works, from the very first annotation in the Robertsbridge Codex from the 14th century, to Max MSP patches and software sampling. With two CD releases and nine performances in cathedrals and churches throughout Europe, Spire remains a potent live force in harnessing the sounds of the ages. Art direction and design by Jon Wozencroft.

Title: Lethal Weapons
Label: AZTEC MUSIC (AUSTRALIA)
Format: CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: AVS 028CD
"The infamous late '70s punk/new wave/power pop (they kept changing their mind on what it was) compilation Lethal Weapons was a tentative major label funded foray into the emergent Australian punk movement. It was short lived and much maligned, (apparently, they didn't 'mean it man!') but was an important release in that it contains the earliest recordings of, amongst others: The Boys Next Door (Nick Cave/Birthday Party), Teenage Radio Stars (Sean Kelly & James Freud - Models), The Survivors (The New Christs), Jab (Models) and The Negatives (Sacred Cowboys). Most of the bands would not last out the 1970s, but, with so many of the individuals involved going on to significant careers, this album represents a fascinating glimpse into their beginnings. Our deluxe 6-panel digipak, has been remastered from the original tapes, has liner notes by Ian McFarlane and a revealing essay on the origins (and demise) of the Suicide label by Glenn Terry. There are 2 bonus tracks: the Teenage Radio Stars' non-LP B-side 'Sweet Boredom' and the Teenage Radio Stars' film clip for 'I Wanna Be Your Baby.'"

Title: The Complete Havoc Singles 1971-1973
Label: AZTEC MUSIC (AUSTRALIA)
Format: 2CD
Price: $27.00
Catalog #: AVS 035CD
"Melbourne's short-lived Havoc Records label ran from 1971 to 1973 and released landmark releases from some of Australia's greatest ever bands. The monster-selling Aztecs Live! At Sunbury, and the all-time Aztecs' classic Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy were the biggest sellers, but the label also released notable platters from Lobby Loyde (with the Coloured Balls and The Wild Cherries), Carson, Thump'n Pig & Puff'n Billy, Michael Turner In Session, Ash, Chook (best Aussie band name ever?) and Star Spangled Banger. Aztecs' drummer Gil Matthews was the house engineer/producer for Havoc and produced all nineteen singles and five albums (including his own release 'Little Dove'/'Gil's Thing'). The label was a testament to Havoc boss Frank Smith's eclectic taste -- apart from the 'Oz Rock' stable listed above, there were Jasmine's Dory Previn covers, Robbie Snowden's ridiculous 'Hot Pants Sue' and the ultra-rare soundtrack A City's Child. The entire 1971-1973 singles are collected in this 2CD deluxe package with 2 bonus tracks from Carson and David Pickard. 8-panel digipak with a 24 page booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Ian McFarlane."

Title: Well Hung
Label: B-MUSIC
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: BMS 011CD
Subtitled: 20 Funk-Rock Eruptions From Beneath Communist Hungary - Volume 1. Domestic US version (issued by Finders Keepers in the UK in 2008). "B-Music break yet more ground with 22 stomping selections from the vaults of Eastern Europe's best kept secret, Hungaraton/Qualiton Records. This first ever compendium piles heavy psych, jazz, glam and funk onto a heaped spoonful dripping with the cream of the '60s/'70s Hungarian rock scene -- Omega, Metro, Locomotiv GT, Skorpio as well as B-Music's very own jet-set fit-bit Sarolta Zalatnay. The unique ways in which Hungarian rockers interpreted such sporadic and disparate influences and unknowingly mirrored embryonic developments in Western rock from behind a political blindfold is truly unique. The national pride of Hungary's pre-war musical heritage ensured that the state-owned label Supraphon's in-house studio was designed to immaculate classical standards with acoustic specifications that would put its surrounding Eastern European labels to shame. The quality of phonograph records, from a part of the world that was usually notorious for low quality pressings and repeatedly recycled vinyl, would surpass the European standards ensuring that the hand crafted sound of Hungary's futuristic pop music was light years ahead of its time and would stand the test of time for many (delayed) years to come. The introduction of electronic instruments penetrated Hungary like a double-edged sword and polarized progressive pop aficionados over night. Where the introduction of Czechoslovakian electric guitars unified Eastern Europe's rock 'n' roll fantasists and spawned the rock in opposition movement in the mid '60s the spurious arrival of synthesizers ten years later spawned a host of new streams of hybrid rock which embraced funk, soul and disco. The restrictions of communism coupled with the silver-spooned Westerners musical xenophobia, however, as good as guaranteed that no matter how close Hungarians got to the authentic rock 'n roll sound their music would still never safely make the journey over the language barrier. In recent years, as much as 15 years since the collapse of the iron curtain, the interjection of many forms of latter day communist era art into popular western culture has become apparent and increasingly well documented. Hopefully at some stage discerning palettes will develop a taste for Hungarian rock music in the same way that we have come to accept, champion and be inspired by Polish poster art and Czech cinema." Includes 24-page booklet.

Label: BASIC REPLAY (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: BR 001CD
Basic Replay is a reggae reissue label run by Honest Jon's in London and Basic Channel/Rhythm & Sound in Berlin, and this album is a sampler of its releases since starting in 2004. All except two of the tracks are now available on CD for the very first time. This assemblage includes the best of the label's dancehall hits, classic deep dub stunners and reggae essentials that you must own. The Ackie and Tenastilin tracks are from the London dancehall, killer shots from 1986 and 1992. Basic Replay's hit 12" reissue of "Rambo" was the subject of feature articles in Wax Poetics magazine and Natty Dread (France). Also available is a hit from Professor Grizzly and Ijahman Levi's rare, resplendent first version of "I'm A Levi" (recorded in London in 1974) and the apocalyptic "Ayatollah," recorded by Jackie Mittoo post-Studio One, in New York. From Canada, King Culture's stunning dub of Barry Brown is surely the deadliest cut of the mighty "Cuss Cuss" rhythm. The Courtney Melody, Chuck Turner and White Mice tracks are classic no-mercy Stateside digi-sufferers from just a few years ago, the track from Andrew Bees (the Black Uhuru singer) is in the same lofty tradition. Keith Hudson's LP masterwork Flesh Of My Skin is represented by its opener, featuring Count Ossie; alongside cruelly brilliant, deeply grooving productions by Niney The Observer (via Gregory Isaacs) and Prince Jazzbo which epitomize the label's appeal to the reggae cognoscenti over the last three years, but also beyond, to fans of dubstep, techno, anything tough and worth a listen.

Title: Anthology Of Dutch Electronic Tape Music, Volume 1 1955-1966
Label: BASTA (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 2CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: BASTA 9182
"The two-volume Anthology of Dutch Electronic Tape Music was originally released in the late 1970s on limited edition vinyl by the Donemus Composers' Voice label. Compiled by electronica pioneer Dick Raaijmakers, the series offered an authoritative survey of electronic tape music composed in the Netherlands from 1955 to 1977. Those LPs are long out of print and highly sought by collectors. Basta has now reissued this historic series on CD. In 2004, Basta collaborated with NEAR (the Nederlands Elektro-Akoestisch Repertoirecentrum) and Donemus on Popular Electronics: Early Dutch Electronic Music from Philips Research Laboratories. This 4CD boxed set with seven booklets presented vintage tape music recorded from 1956 to 1963 by Dutch composers Dick Raaijmakers (aka Kid Baltan), Tom Dissevelt, and Henk Badings. In Holland, as in other countries, electronic music produced up to 1966 was often prepared for concerts. After 1966, electronic music expanded as advanced computer technology was developed, live electronic music received more attention, electronic music was accorded a place in conservatory and university curricula, and private studios were set up by and for groups of improvising musicians. Therefore 1966-1967, a pivotal period in the history of Dutch electronic music, marks the dividing line of these collections. Volume 1 includes tape music from 1955 to 1966, and Volume 2 documents tape music from the 'open studios' from 1966 to 1977. The new Anthology reissues were compiled from the original source tape recordings, which have been well-preserved and meticulously remastered. The packages (each contains two CDs) include the original liner notes from the Composers' Voice releases, including an extensive historical overview by Raaijmakers. These releases launch a series of new anthologies spotlighting electro-acoustic music composed and recorded in the Netherlands during this seminal era. Electronic musicians have been intensely active in the Netherlands since 1955, and the variety of this activity is reflected in the large number of studios devoted to electronic music. Anthology Vol. 1 illustrates both the work of legendary studios and of individual composers -- the latter represented by their earliest and most characteristic pieces. The majority of the works are exercises and étude-style compositions." Artists include Hans Kox, Ton de Leeuw, Jan Boerman, Jaap Spek, Rudolf Escher, Henk Badings, Dick Raaijmakers, Ton de Leeuw, Frits Weiland, Tom Dissevelt, Axel Meijer, Robbert Jan de Neeve, Peter Schat, Ton Bruynèl, Bilthoven, Will Eisma, Klaus Gorter, Luctor Ponse and Berend Giltay.

Label: BASTA (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 2CD
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: BASTA 9183
"This second volume of the Anthology of Electronic Tape Music contains works composed after 1966, when electronic music broadened its horizons and established links with other disciplines, as studios opened their portals to influences and involvement from outside. Although electronic music after 1966 became very fragmented and took many new forms in Holland, Volume 2 of the Anthology aims to provide an overall survey of pure tape music. Other movements, such as computer music, and their links with each other are discussed in the liner notes. We have attempted to offer groundbreaking and influential works as well as first electronic works by pioneering composers. Volume 2 presents composers not represented on Volume 1." Label: BBC RADIO ENTERPRISES (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: DRWRW 001CD
"Available in two volumes, these releases deal with the music, effects and atmospheres from the heyday of Dr Who. Volume 1 focuses on the years 1963-1969 (during which time the Doctor was played by William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton) charting the music from the very first episode, taking us through to 1969 when the Doctor was banished to Earth by the Time Lords. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was a legendary facility which, for over forty years, created pioneering techniques for sound that were used on a myriad of programmes (Dr Who was their biggest client) and for the first time, demonstrated the importance and value of intelligent, creative use of sound. The Workshop's techniques inspired all manner of musicians at the time and continue to do so today. Featuring familiar sounds and music from Dr. Who, the CDs are both an insight into the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's pioneering techniques and influence on electronic music and a glorious reminder of the Dr. Who of old, all the more timely since Christopher Eccleston is currently travelling through time and space on BBC right now."

Title: Twelve Inches Of Pleasure - BBE Singles Part One
Label: BBE (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: BBE 051CD
"A long time ago BBE Records released twelve inch records, in those days London's Soho offered the record buyer a feast of vinyl; specialist stores proliferated, turntables took over from the guitar as every schoolboy dreamed to be the next 'Superstar' DJ. The music press was astounded at the survival of the 12" record, despite the major's attempt to quash it. In to this 'mix' BBE rose, releasing obscure funk records, and A Bollywood Funk album, as well as kick starting the whole DJ driven compilation genre with its Stop & Listen series. Fast forward to the now, sadly many of the Soho vinyl institutions have gone (R.I.P- 'Catch A Groove', 'Mr Bongo', 'Atlas', 'Quaff Records' the first 'Deal Real' & 'Major Flavours'), we hope that this album will memorialize a small part of that special dance music history."

It compiles contributions from artists who have chosen for the acoustics as working field, starting from the visual aspect and going to the musical one, then trying to promote the teachings of their sound art. The final purpose is to present it as a 'listenable exhibition'. So, a magazine to listen to, with, most of the time sound contributions, but also f.e. spoken words from the artists and varying texts about & from the artists and from art-historians and music-scientists." BTC # 3 features Johannes Wohnseifer (sounds of electric machines made by the Braun Co.), Ross Sinclair, Dave Allen, Kristin Oppenheim ("sound installations that deal with hardly perceptible, spare interventions in space"), Alexander Györfi ("builds concrete meta-models that demonstrate the basically conceptual character of all pop music"), Slave Pianos, Rodney Graham, Annika Eriksson and Christine & Irene Hohenbchler.

Title: The Art Of Jenbe Drumming: The Mali Tradition Vol. 1
Label: BIBI AFRICA (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: BIBI 30472CD
Earlier first volume now available. Performers: Jaraba Jakite, Yamadu Dunbia, Jeli Madi Kuyate, (jenbe); Madu Jakite (dunun). Recorded in 1995 in Bamako, Mali. "In the recordings, three masters of traditional jenbe dance drumming present the clear beauty and explosive power of their music. Of course the music of a jenbe dance celebration cannot be adequately documented, because it represents part of a dynamic event, which can only be fully grasped by witnessing all its interlocking elements. The sound recording of a celebration would lack the movement of the dancers and the whole atmosphere of colors, smells, and enthusiasm. The recordings presented in this CD, moreover, were made not in the context of a celebration at all, but in a schoolyard in the Badialan quarter of Bamako. The drummers performed for the microphone, without rehearsals, without arrangements, and without an underlying notion on how to convey celebration music without a celebration. It was the first time to do a studio recording for all of them. They spontaneously created a kind of art music in a space without references, an abstract translation of music traditionally played for celebrations. The original live tracks were neither cut nor overdubbed."

Label: BIRDMAN RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: BMR 036CD
"The 1996 publication of Robert Gordon's It Came From Memphis book unleashed the untold story of the underground history of the rich music scene of a little town we like to call Memphis, Tennessee. While the stories of Elvis, Sun Records, and Stax had been well documented already, the stories of Charlie Feathers, Furry Lewis, RL Burnside and Barbarian Records had yet to be told. Needless to say, owning this book, as well as the accompanying CD that featured loads of obscuro rock and blues artists, were mandatory for lovers of American music." Artists include: Good Kid Robert, Otha Turner, Moloch, Sid Selvidge, Mud Boy and the Neutrons, Hammie Nixon, Van Zula Hunt and the Beale Street Jug Band, Johnny Woods and Bobby Ray Watson, Phineas Newborn Orchestra, Tav Falco's Unapproachable Panther Burns, B.B. Title: Jim Dickinson Field Recordings: Delta Experiment Project #3
Label: BIRDMAN RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BMR 047CD
"Memphis musician/producer Jim Dickinson is a legend in his own right (having played keyboards on the Rolling Stones' 'Wild Horses,' performed on Bob Dylan albums, produced Big Star and Alex Chilton albums, etc., etc.) and he definitely knows a thing or two about blues roots and field recordings of legendary and should-be-legendary blues artists from the south. Dickinson captures raw and spontaneous performances from some of the most important blues artists in the Memphis / Mississippi area on these exclusive recordings by Furry Lewis, Sleepy John Estes (whose performances feature the guitar work of Ry Cooder), Otha Turner, Mose Vinson, Johnny Woods and Alec Teal. These pure examples of Delta blues were committed to tape at Sam Phillips studios, Ardent studios, the Orpheum Theater, and various fields in and around the Memphis area. Raw, gritty and real -- just how the blues should be heard."

Dickinson says, 'The Blues is a musical tradition born from the dark prison of slavery. Torn from family and homeland, separated from custom and culture, the call and response of the African work song took on new emotional depth. A lonesome sound in the darkness -- a howling dog or passing train -- echoed by harmonica or guitar became a raw, powerful statement of hard times, long work, and fast pleasure; a voice in the southern night complaining about the human condition.'"

These X-rated films feature less 'by the numbers' funk and more improvised grooves and 'avant garde' textures than the typical blaxploitation soundtracks. Using mainly jazz musicians from Oakland, CA (where many of these films were made), these recently uncovered master tapes (and the 16 pages of color photos) are sure to delight your eyes and ears."

Title: Hidden People - Various Peoples
Label: BLUE JUICE (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: BJ 013CD
"Compiled by DJ Ziggy and 80% made up of unreleased, exclusive tracks, Hidden People is meant as a tribute to the artists Ziggy's come to respect over the years for their continuing commitment to music's underground -- the Hidden People. The CD is split into 3 Sessions. Session 1 kicks things off with some laid back instrumental hip hop -- vibes mellow enough to chill the wildest of dogs. Highlights include 'BT Africa', downbeat West African traditionalism from veteran DJ, producer, label boss and radio presenter DJ Vadim. Also featured is 'Charras Wrexus', ghost town beats courtesy of Deckwrecka, Psycho Pab and Ziggy himself close things out, bringing up the basslines to set you up for... Session 2 -- a demonstration of the diversity of Blue Juice with more up tempo tracks. It opens with Part 2's 'Superman Syndrome'. Session 2 also features a rather special slice of vocal cheekiness from Scratchy Muffin, especially for anyone who thinks hip hop's got no sense of humour. Bringing us to...Session 3, which focuses on more experimental & electronic music. We're particularly excited to be able to bring you the instrumental. Also featured is 'Airport', from Blue Juice's latest signings, Borngräber & Strüver, and finally 'Version 12' by Pilote, aka Stuart Cullen. Welcome to the world of the Hidden People. Some of them you'll already know; but we're just as excited about the artists -- Hermit, Proper, Mr Blue, Basic Sound ? you may be hearing for the first time. We feel the line-up on this CD embodies the underground spirit -- a challenge to the majors and a breath of fresh air to everyone else."

Title: Free London
Label: BO WEAVIL RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: 2LP
Price: $29.00
Catalog #: WEAVIL 011LP
Originally released in 2006, featuring Rob Mullender, Wooden Spoon, Ladywoodsman, and The Eidetic Band -- each given one side of an LP. Free London is a split double LP (heavyweight vinyl), of four bands/musicians from London's improvised folk music scene. LP1: Wooden Spoon is seeking to create a music free from the influence of the contemporary world, to evoke some kind of state of pastoral introspection at once joyful and sad. Influenced by the Takoma school of guitar players, Popol Vuh and folk music from around the world. Rob Mullender presents some solo acoustic pieces that owe much to heroes of the English guitar in Jansch, Renbourn and others. Mullender also spent some time woodshedding with Davey Graham. His music is rife with delicate wonderings that edge towards a freer conception of folk music. LP2: Eidetic Band works throughout the different musical diagrams, those both fictional and unreal (the names of folk, noise, drone, jazz etc.) -- traditions which inform ways of feeling, playing and showing with sounds. They are interested in exploring each in neverending turn, feeling each sound more and more deeply. Ladyswoodsman is the London-based duo of Luke Garwood (aka Duke Garwood) and Paul May. Using a variety of different instruments from guitars and clarinets to all kinds of percussion in the creation of improvisations that ignite the imagination. Some of the tracks have a down-home folky feel, while others could find themselves happily nestling amongst the free jazz greats of the late '60s.
