BPC 173EP
Lee Van Dowski
presents an awesome statement called
The Last Run
. The Geneva-based DJ and producer has releases on well-known labels such as Cadenza, Soma, Dumb-Unit, and Num Records, to name a few. The title track is influenced by classic British Warp and Rephlex electronica, developing slowly and steadily with fat, organic beats. "Rave Da House" rocks down to the ground. The sound is a bit more clean and organized, but for this reason it's totally hypnotic.

The Variable Man
Label:
LEENA (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
LEENA 009EP
"French artist, Lee Van Dowski of NUM and Cadenza lowers eyes and draws lips to partial smirks with his charming and witty release.
The Variable Man
, based on the title of a science fiction story series from the '50s, is brilliantly transmitted through a tunnel of sound engineering and audio design by Lee Van Dowski. Lee's electronic rendering of 'The Variable Man,' distinguishes several dominant male voices accumulating a rhythmic momentum to the peak of the track, a peak where an orgasmic flow just stops short of the central explosion, fundamentally, fading the instrumentals before revamping again. The B-side of the track, 'Thomas Coles Lives,' co-produced by Agnès, comes alive with a fascinating mix of symbols and keyboards.
The Variable Man
is Lee's second release on Leena music, after his first 12",
Louder Elvis
, in collaboration with Agnès, appeared on Leena in 2008. Both tracks express very minimalistic tones yet are characterized by rather divergent instrumentals and beats."

Highway to Xenia
Label:
MENTAL GROOVE (SWITZERLAND)
Format:
LP
Price:
$16.00
Catalog #:
MG 043LP
"His first appearance on Mental Groove was in 2003 for the CD
Hosomaki:mix volume 2
, a compilation introducing up and coming artists from the Lemanic Riviera. Since then the half Polish-French producer has come a long way, making himself a name by releasing two very successful singles on Luciano's label Cadenza and recently his own label (Num records) with his partner Phil Quenum, whose first release is doing serious damage here and there, and here again, kind of Autechre meeting Robert Hood in 7th Sky. Soma records immediately signed them on their new sublabel for a handful of releases... this mini-LP comes together with a special free album CD of different electronica, not far from the sound of Schematic records."

The Darkened Component
Label:
NUM (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$9.00
Catalog #:
NUM 006EP
"On his own label, widely considered as a stripped-down, more dancefloor-friendly version of Cadenza, Lee is at home and kickstarts the new year with more futuristic digital rock'n'roll -- without the ego posturing, we're talking 'faceless techno bollocks' -- for those who know. Well, techno's pretty much the new rock isn't it, minus the vocals sometimes -- then again, there are many instrumental bands. You know, it's got heavy electronic riffs in loops, rising and falling, reaching intense climaxes followed by breakdowns. So bang your head to the ruthless buildups and outlandish, cosmic breakdowns of 'The Darkened Component' on the A side, and consider 'face B' as another A side: 'Endonet' immediately grabs you with a darker atmosphere, a droning, menacing synth and nasty metallic bleeps. Starting from and returning to a confined and intimate space, all sounds expand to arena-size proportions in-between."

The Last Bounce EP
Label:
NUM (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$9.00
Catalog #:
NUM 010EP
"Tenth release for Num records, the anniversary release features the founders on either side! Moving away from the cold universe of deep bleeps after a couple of minutes, Lee Van Dowski's 'The Last Bounce' brings a sweet darkness into play, made of dreamlike, plaintive echoes and reverb-soaked, cascading strings in a perfect afterhours mood. Quirky touches are hidden all over like micro-easter eggs. Adding soft, detailed percussion work over the top in the last quarter might help launch another mix or the next DJ but this one is beautiful enough to end the night! Or day. What time is it? Wow. Quenum's remix is based on a short, funky loop rhythm from which sounds and further grooves extend into the air like so many lizard's tongues, darting out with a pop of the synth or a slap of the snare. By mid-track this ritual groovefest will have you doing obscene hula-hoops. Reaching for random notes, dropping lightning-fast modulations, Quenum's having a good time running with the lights off and so are we."
