Artist: VASKS, PETERIS
Title: Viatore
Label: WERGO (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: WER 6705
Performed by Normunds ?nē (English horn) & the Sinfonietta Riga. "Peteris Vasks' early style owed much to the aleatoric experiments of Lutoslawski, Penderecki and Crumb. Later works include elements of Latvian folk music, such as his gentle and pastoral English horn 'Concerto of 1989' and the powerful 'Viatore' for string orchestra. Currently living in Riga as a freelance composer, Vasks feels strongly about environmental issues and a sense of nature -- both pristine and destroyed -- can be found in many of his works. This disc features a sampling of his instrumental music, played by Normunds ?nē and the Sinfonietta Riga."

Title: Cantus Ad Pacem
Label: WERGO (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: WER 6712
"This CD is the first to be devoted exclusively to the organ music of the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. With the exception of the 'Te Deum' (recorded in St. Gertrude in Riga), all of the works were recorded on the magnificent organ of the cathedral in Riga. Here, over the course of the past 20 years, Talivaldis Deksnis, since 1984 one of the principal organists of this venerable house of worship, has performed all of Vasks' works for organ, many of them for the first time. Besides original compositions for organ, this CD also includes two adaptations of works for string orchestra, 'Viatore' and 'Canto Di Forza,' both dedicated to Talivaldis Deksnis, with whom Vasks has maintained a lifelong friendship."

Title: The Seasons
Label: WERGO (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: WER 6734
"The Seasons (Gadalaiki) is not program music in the classical sense, but rather an expression of feelings. Vasks says, 'When I first heard Vestard Shimkus playing I instantly understood -- he is just the right interpreter. The notes turned into colors, scents, started to breathe, and The Seasons came into being.' Shimkus' performance received the Great Latvian Music Award, the highest national distinction in the field of music."
