"The new work from master musician David S. Ware arrives! Shakti is Ware's first new studio recording in almost 6 years, and his first with a new group since his highly esteemed Quartet was disbanded. The Quartet's final performance was documented on Renunciation (AUM042). Even before that album was released, Ware was developing a new group concept, and beginning to compose for same. In July 2007 this new group, featuring guitarist Joe Morris, made its live debut at the Iridium jazz club in NYC. The membership was solidified with the addition of long-time musical compatriot William Parker on bass and fellow master musician Warren Smith on drums. A European tour in November 2007 followed, and a studio session was booked for May 2008, resulting in the luminous Shakti. Working with musicians (as he ever has) who fully understand the profound ebb and flow of his music, and who can trace the tendrils thereof as close to infinity as human fingers allow, Ware here presents five new compositions and a re-interpolation of his own 'Antidromic' which first appeared on Wisdom of Uncertainty (AUM001). Each group member contributes exquisitely. Joe Morris long ago developed his own utterly singular school of jazz guitar. His coloration of David's music comes from a deep appreciation and full understanding thereof. William Parker's bass voice has been an integral aspect of David's work since 1988 and is heard here in its highest form in both pizzicato and arco modes. Drummer/percussionist Warren Smith is a blessing pure and true; over the past half century his work has graced recordings by Van Morrison (percussion and vibes on Astral Weeks!), Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Quincy Jones, Sam Rivers, Julius Hemphill, and many more."

"Recorded live in concert at the Abrons Arts Center, NYC on October 15, 2009, Saturnian documents master saxophonist David S. Ware's triumphant return to performance following his kidney transplant in May 2009. This performance prompted features in The New York Times and on NBC Nightly News. Ware, in full peak of form, performed three extended pieces, each one on a different horn. 'Methone' is on the saxello and 'Pallene' features the stritch. David has played these lesser-known members of the saxophone family for many decades and recorded with them in the late 80s, but this was the first time he has performed with them live on stage. The final piece, 'Anthe' is performed on the tenor sax. 'To perform solo saxophone is who I have always been,' writes Ware in the liner notes. 'This is the way I've practiced all of these years, as though I am performing a solo. It is just as satisfying as playing in any other context. The freedom allows you to witness and solidify what is passing through. There's a voice inside each saxophone, expressing different orders of Being. When you listen, learn to open your third ear. Listen for the voice inside the music. It will expand who you think you are.' Listening to this recording of profound solo performances, we decided to put it out as soon as possible. 2009 was David's 50th year of playing saxophone (he started at age 10 and never stopped!) and we planned to celebrate that auspicious fact with a new saxophone-focused trio session featuring him on all his horns. The studio was booked and the record was scheduled for a Fall 2009 release, but, of course, the universe had other plans. When David was well enough to perform again, he wanted to present a solo concert, returning to that idea of celebrating his anniversary by playing all three saxophones. That concert is Saturnian."

"The recording and release of Onecept celebrates David S. Ware's 50th year of singular and profound saxophone artistry; a studio session specifically arranged for same featuring Ware on three horns: saxello, stritch, tenor along with fellow musical masters William Parker on bass (stalwart fellow prophet) and Warren Smith on drums and tympani (also featured on Ware's album Shakti). Unlike most every previous album he has made (Corridors & Parallels being another exception), there was no rehearsal for this session; the songs/streams were created fully in the moment of creation, trusting in collective skill to manifest the majesty. Ware on the title: 'The main concept of this record is Onecept: I'm playing three instruments on here, but there's one direction on the whole album. "Every David S. Ware solo concert performance is a rare and magisterial happening. This happened twice in 2010 and both concerts are presented here in their entirety. The first took place in March at an intimate, invite-only event in Brooklyn; the second took place at the Umbrella Music Festival in Chicago in early November. It was later in November that Ware and group recorded Planetary Unknown (AUM 068CD). This is the second volume in a planned series of DSW solo recordings and is printed in a strictly limited CD edition of 1000. Further to his tenor, Ware recently added the sopranino (pitched one full octave above the alto) to his arsenal, and these concerts were his public debut on the new horn. As Tim Niland wrote in his Music and More blog: 'There is nothing rushed here, the music is patient and distinguished, and Ware's beautiful golden tone, echoing the masters like Hawkins, Coltrane and Rollins, shines like the light from a powerful star.'"
