Title:
The End Of An Ear
Label:
COLUMBIA (NETHERLANDS)
Format:
CD
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
COL 4933422CD
Repressed. Budget line reissue of the first (pre-accident) Robert Wyatt solo album, first issued in 1970 by CBS. Not part of the recent Thirsty Ear reissue series which includes the classics that followed this one,
Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard
(1974) &
Rock Bottom
(1975). At this point Wyatt was in between work with the Soft Machine and Matching Mole and was aided by the likes of Elton Dean (alto saxello), David Sinclair (organ), Mark Charig (cornet), Neville Whitehead (bass), Mark Ellidge (piano) & Cyril Ayers (percussion). Wyatt himself on drums, mouth, piano, organ. The album opens & closes with a baffling space-jazz "cover" of Gil Evans' "Las Vegas Tango" that is quite deep, and proceeds through various settings of psychedelic jazz, Gong-like jamming and free-style improv balladry. Very out, very good.

Catalog #:
RUNE 175CD
"Vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Robert Wyatt's career extends from the beginnings of the psychedelic era to the present day. This album started its life as simply a collection of the two BBC Top Gear sessions that Robert recorded in 1972 and 1974. But as we worked on it, Robert became more and more involved in it, until it ended up in its final form. In addition to the Top Gear recordings, there is a previously unheard and little known 1973 soundtrack for a short experimental film, two recent works with old collaborator Hugh Hopper and finally a 2003 home demo of a new song that did not end up on Robert's new release
Cuckooland
. Additionally, this CD includes a Quicktime movie of that 1973 film, as well as a 16 page booklet filled with photos, artwork and stories supplied by Robert and others, and liner notes by Aymeric Leroy."

Title:
Radio Experiment Rome, February 1981
Label:
RAI TRADE (ITALY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$24.00
Catalog #:
RTD 014CD
"Previously unreleased material made by Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine) in studio for an Italian radio programme in 1981.Why did this demi-god of rock's underground travel all the way to Rome with his wife, Alfreda Benge, to spend a week recording for an obscure (even to Italians) radio programme? Because he believed in what these Roman radio guys were doing! Wyatt himself described the experience as
'a chance to expand ideas to bring to life outside the music business, which is just one big fashion industry...normally you have to obtain money for studio time and aim at a particular recording for a particular product. Here they wanted to see a musician's work in progress so it wasn't necessary to have a finished product...it's a fantastic chance to work more freely.'
So after three days of testing, the eight-track started officially rolling -- piano, vocals, hi-hat, a jaw harp -- laying down track after track, until the Roman radio guys ended up with 45 min of music, including pieces like 'Born Again Cretin,' a song about Nelson Mandela, the 'Opium War,' with garbled 'radio-like' vocals, and 'Heathens have no Souls,' featuring a jaw harp. This is a rare opportunity to see what the great Robert Wyatt is capable of when left to work freely, outside the pressures of the star system and the 'moneygoround.'"
