"Frog's Eye features a fascinating selection of Ziporyn's orchestral music. Partnering with the heralded Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Ziporyn moves the orchestra out of the Western Hemisphere and into the realm of world fusion using Balinese and Indian modes. 'Drill' features a solo by Ziporyn on bass clarinet and soprano Anne Harley sings poetry by Li Shangyin and W.S. Merwin on 'The Ornate Zither and the Nomad Flute'. Discussing his inspiration for the title track of this album, Ziporyn describes a frog sitting almost entirely immersed in water. 'Perfect stillness, perfect contemplation, patience, serenity, all that good Zen stuff...but they are in fact hard at work, staring intently, waiting for a moment of action and violence, for insects, for food.' Humans, in contrast, 'strive for a certain type of awareness, for multilayered perception, and occasionally we get there,' he says, 'but we seem to be built for subjective narrative. We've got to catch the fly to survive.'"
