River
Label:
4 MEN WITH BEARDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
4M 108LP
"This bestselling reissue will now finally be available on 180 gram audiophile vinyl with gatefold sleeve. Featuring David Lindley on guitar,
River
blends the heavy rock sounds of the early Jeff Beck Group (
Truth
and
Beck-Ola
) with the folky vibe of 'acoustic' Led Zeppelin (
Led Zep III
) and Tim Buckley. Terry Reid's highly melodic songwriting and scintillating vocals distinguish him from his peers. Terry Reid would probably have been more famous if he hadn't turned down the slot of lead singer for Led Zeppelin in 1968 to pursue his own unique musical path, but albums like this make us glad he did!"

Live at Fillmore West
was a seminal soul breakthrough. It finally cemented her status beyond soul audiences and it matched her with a phenomenal rhythm section in King Curtis and the Kingpens. 4M 117LP
"Originally released in 1971, America is one of the artistic high points of John Fahey's career. And yet, for nearly 30 years it was not heard in its entirety, as what was originally intended as a double album was pared down to a single LP. 4 Men With Beards is proud to present the complete
America
double album, released on vinyl for the first time ever. Fahey himself had this to say about
America
:
'Out of all the songs I ever wrote, I consider only two of them 'epic' or 'classic' or in the 'great' category and they are both on this record.'

Judee Sill

Format:
LP
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
4M 120LP
2011 repress. "Judee Sill's debut album (as well as the debut of the Asylum label) heralded a major new talent in the airy, contemporary folk world of the early '70s. The album employed the production skills of Sill's ex-husband Bob Harris, as well as ex-Turtle, ex-Leaves Jim Pons, and Graham Nash (on the album's sole single, 'Jesus Was s Crossmaker'). Judee Sill featured all original compositions, many of which relied on Sill's own brand of cosmological Christian imagery to make their point. By turns spare and lavishly orchestrated, there is still a cohesive feel to all of the album; her lyrics are exceptionally poetic and her voice is smooth enough to give every song a shimmery feel. The essence of the music is folk, the execution pop: the songs feel like a comfort blanket, a statement of hope from a troubled soul." The first release on David Geffen's Asylum label in 1971. Listed on Jim O'Rourke's Desert Island all-time top ten!

4 MEN WITH BEARDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
4M 121LP
2011 repress. "The second album Judee Sill made proved to be her last. A notoriously slow songwriter, this enjoyable outing took its toll on Sill during its making, turning her back to her recently kicked heroin addiction and away from the desire to create more music. Instead of using an outside arranger for the strings (as she did on her previous album), Sill did all of the work herself. Her lack of formal training and the immense amount of orchestral overdubs certainly would have made such an outing a hardship for anyone. It's a stellar example of the kind of singer/songwriter fare the music industry was mining in the early '70s. The supporting cast of top L.A. studio musicians solidifies Sill's unique brand country-flavored pop, which moves from introspective meanderings to loping rock, often within a single song."

4M 122LP
"In late 1966, Herbie Hancock with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette entered a New York studio to capture the vibe of 'swinging London' in a jazz mode -- with grooves that create effective bluesy moods on the slow pieces and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks. Meanwhile in London, the Yardbirds (with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page) were recording additional material for use in the
Blow-Up
movie soundtrack. Liner notes by maverick journalist Steve Dollar. Superb audiophile remastering." 180 gram HQ vinyl. Gatefold sleeve.

Format:
LP
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
4M 124LP
"Perhaps best known for his arrangements on Frank Sinatra's classic 1950s Capitol Records releases, Nelson Riddle was also an accomplished and popular soundtrack composer. This is the deluxe gatefold 180 gram vinyl edition of his 1962 original score for Stanley Kubrick's classic film
Lolita
. It contains 'Lolita Ya Ya' (reprised in a slightly longer version as 'Charlotte Is Dead'), a maddeningly vapid and catchy track with nonsense vocals that comes across as a simultaneously vicious and good-humored parody of the kitschiest elements of early '60s rock 'n roll. Deluxe gatefold with liner notes by Michael Layne Heath."

4M 125LP
"Originally released in 1973,
Paris 1919
is Cale's fourth solo release following his departure from the Velvet Underground. Cale's songs on
Paris 1919
are hyper-literate numbers filled with political intrigue and shady characters loosely based around the Versailles Conference alluded to in the album's title. Recorded with help from Lowell George and Richie Hayward of Los Angeles southern-rockers Little Feat and the UCLA Symphony Orchestra.
Pitchfork

1919
'
the most accessible and most purely beautiful record of Cale's storied, multi-faceted career.

"Nina's second LP, originally released in 1959,
The Amazing Nina Simone
features a repertoire ranging from a swinging 'Stompin' at the Savoy' and an emotional 'It Might as Well Be Spring' to an English folk ballad ('Tomorrow'), spirituals, and an R&B song ('You've Been Gone Too Long') and is backed by a subtle orchestra arranged by Bob Mersey that effectively showcases her top-form vocals. 180 gram vinyl."

Title:
Nina At Town Hall
Label:
4 MEN WITH BEARDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
4M 129LP
"One of Nina Simone's finest recordings, this 1959 Colpix LP features the unique singer/pianist performing classic versions of 'Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair,' 'The Other Woman,' and 'Wild Is the Wind.' With supportive work from bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Al 'Tootie' Heath, she also sounds fine on a few instrumentals. 'Summertime' is performed twice, once as a vocal. From the start of her career, Nina Simone carved out her own unique niche, meshing together her classical piano technique with folk singing, civil rights protest lyrics and jazz. All of those elements are in evidence on this highly recommended set."

"Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius aka Cluster released this, their first album after Conrad Schnitzler (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream) left the group originally known as Kluster, in 1971. On the outer edge of German space rock,
Cluster '71
stands as a testament to minimalist 'cosmische' music. The three untitled tracks are exploratory, ever-changing pieces which focus on guitar distortion and synthesizer wails. This album deserves the many accolades it's been given, and holds up as an early landmark in the history of beatless ambience."

"One of the most enigmatic figures in pop music history Scott Walker (nee Scott Engel) first saw massive success in England with his band The Walker Brothers in 1965. Not really brothers, nor were they British, the trio left Hollywood seeking fame in England, and they found it there for a time with their particular brand of orchestrated pop. Following the group's demise in 1967, Walker set out to pursue solo stardom in perhaps the most peculiar way possible, with over-the-top baroque pop songs owing more to his idol Jacques Brel, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra than they did to The Beatles or The Stones. This is his first solo LP from 1967 and features 3 of his own compositions along with covers of songs by Brel, Tim Hardin, and the Brill Building team of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. Scott 2
made it all the way to number one on the UK pop charts, perhaps the strangest number one hit in pop history. Continuing with his orchestral obsession,
Scott 2
features over-the-top string and horn arrangements, occasionally veering into dangerously schmaltzy territory. This production style is in drastic contrast to the lyrical content, songs of despair, prostitution, homosexuality, and brutal honesty, indicting the same glamorous and glitzy lifestyle that his baroque pop style emblemizes. "Quite possibly the most influential rock album of all time, despite its initial lackluster sales (it has often been said that 'they only sold a few thousand records, but everyone who bought one started a band').
The Velvet Underground & Nico
has, in the 40+ years since it was first released, influenced the significant works in almost every sub-genre of rock from glam to punk to new wave to industrial noise to twee to indie-rock. But to focus only on its influence would be doing a great disservice to the music, this is one of the most varied, yet coherent, records in the whole pop spectrum and it was nothing short of a revelation in the field of by-the-numbers psych and folk-rock that was the norm in 1967. From the gentle pop opener of 'Sunday Morning' to the dissonance of closer 'European Son,' with stops at garage rock, R&B, and mellow love songs in between,
The Velvet Underground & Nico
is an all-time classic whose influence and power still can not be denied." 180 gram vinyl, gatefold sleeve.

More subdued and lyrically compassionate than the first two records, it is nonetheless equally powerful and many consider 'The Couch Album' to be the Velvet Underground's finest work. The Velvet Underground certainly features some of Lou Reed's finest songwriting from the narcotic beauty of 'Candy Says' and 'I'm Set Free,' to the angular jangle of 'What Goes On' and 'I'm Beginning To See The Light.' Case History
is the debut solo release from bluesy British singer-songwriter Kevin Coyne (originally released on John Peel's Dandelion label in 1972). Primarily just guitar and vocals,
Case History
is a powerful album from a very unique voice who was celebrated by musicians as wide ranging as John Lydon, Sting, and the Mekons. Coyne, who passed away in 2004, spent much of the '60s working with the mentally disabled, and his songwriting is informed by a deep concern for the plight and mistreatment of those who have been tossed off by society. A bit of an outsider himself, he eschewed record industry pressure and maintained focus on his singular artistic vision. Another under-appreciated classic." On 180 gram vinyl.

"Over fifty years since his discovery by ethnomusicologists Dr. Harry Oster and Richard Allen in the prison farm of Angola, Louisiana, what is it that makes the blues as sung and picked out by Robert Pete Williams such a singular listening experience, unequalled elsewhere in that musical form? As Peter Guralnick, in his
Feel Like Going Home
book writes: 'It's difficult to approve the banalities of most blues singers after listening to Robert Pete Williams. More than anyone else he shatters the conventions of the form and refuses to rely upon any of the clichés, either of music or of lyric, which bluesman after bluesman will invoke. Instead he sings blues which reflect a unique and personal vision; he makes each song unmistakably his own.' Unfamiliar keys, cliché-free lyricism, spontaneity, an individualistic style in invoking his particular blues, all make Robert Pete Williams an idiosyncratic entry into the canon. It's impossible to listen to blues artists before him and hear strains of his particular style. None have matched it since.
Louisiana Blues
contains ten songs recorded in the month of July 1966 out in Berkeley, California for John Fahey's Takoma imprint. Includes the original eight-page booklet with liner notes." On 180 gram vinyl.

The golden age of hip-hop certainly has a surplus of fantastic LPs but this one deserves to be right up there near, if not at, the top."
