"Phlegra was written for a chamber orchestra comprising four woodwind, three brass and four strings and is certainly among Xenakis' more abrasive scores: the music unfolds with a harshness that makes no concession to the listener and reveals a sense of stubbornness that nothing can deflect from its purpose. Both in form and tonal atmosphere the piece makes no provisions for respite or relaxation, so relentless is its development. As Xenakis himself stressed, Phlegra is a battleground between the Titans and the new gods of Mount Olympus."
