As quickly as electronic music changes, at least the thread of quality from one strand to the next is constant. Labels like Kompakt, Traum and Trapez have long carried the banner of funky minimalism, and as can be expected a new riser is here: Areal. After releasing the stunning Blondie CD from Ada, Areal returns with its second full-length. It so happens it is from the head of the label, Michael Schwanen. And Michael is Metope, and Metope is the new techno captain. It only makes sense Metope comes from the Greek architectural definition meaning "between the openings" because that is where Schwanen works his magic. Metope has mastered the distance between beats, drawing in tweaks, warm pads and jilting statics. As in "Superimbat," which conducts techno much in the way Isol�e conducts house: as a shifting, gathering electronic zephyr. And yet there are softer sounds like "Alm Realm," which could be seen easily on a Morr Music compilation. Metope out-pitches Superpitcher with "I'm So Ready," a 6+ minute stonker that is covered in hi-hat tinsel and shifts currents like El Ni�o. And who can overlook "Tilt," the 10-minute opus (and CD-only bonus track). Appropriately named: as it totters, it grinds out fuzzy/gilded harmonic dreams. The evolution of electronic music is as inevitable as sunset. Metope is simply the latest to confront the cutting edge and peer over. What is next who can say, but live with Metope while you are here, and, at night, stare at the space between the stars.

Germany's Sebastian Riedl aka Basteroid presents his first full-length CD on Areal Records. He started his music career in 2000 when he founded the label Areal Records together with his two friends Michael Schwanen (Metope) and Matthias Klein (Konfekt, Welt Zwei) -- a good basis for all his future releases. Apart from his work released on Sender Records and a number of remixes, he also performs live all around the world, spreading his unmistakable sounds among the people. On Upsets Ducks, he freely plays all the different music styles that he is influenced by. The result is a happy mix of trance, funk, rock, gongs and bangs. Half of this record was created in Schaerding, Upper Austria, where the whole duck population regularly got upset (that's where the title comes from) by one track in particular, but also by the rest of this record.

Lying there with closed eyes I could hear the struggling child-orchestra practicing inside. Cologne-based Areal co-partner Sebastian Riedl gives you the minimal remedy for your hungry belly. First we put the schnitzel in the flour from both sides, then we dip it deep into the eggs and finally into the bread crumbs. We place it in a hot pan and pay attention to the fine white noise and that there is no cracking from a pan that is too hot. Flip them, ready - the coat of bread crumbs should have big bubbles that come off a little bit - it is recommended to squeeze at least half a lemon on every piece! Enjoy.

When the storm started and the sky turned pink, the little boy was hiding under a palm tree with his mp3 player ready for recording. "All this noise," he said to himself, "I must record this." And it worked! For seven minutes, he managed to record the constantly rising buzz that turned up together with the thunderstorm and of course, disappeared again. And when the sky cleared almost instantaneously, a bizarre yellow figure turned up, floating in mid-air above the ground. Unfortunately, the recording capacity was exhausted. What a pity, because the weird little man with his sparkling red eyes and dressed up in a superman costume started talking in a resounding vocoder effect: "Keep this message from the gigaverse. It shall help you when the time is ripe, best would be around 3 o'clock in the morning!"
