AA 074CD
1998 release; unheralded "countercultural psych from New Jersey". "Formed in 1966 out of the ashes of the Marc 5 and Sonix, this Colonia, NJ ensemble captured the changing times and sociological upheaval of the pre-Woodstock nation. Like the Jefferson Airplane, Neighb'rhood Childr'n and United States Of America, 6 Feet Under was blessed with a dynamic diva who soared amidst searing fuzz leads, swirling organ chords, and gifted songwriting with prophetic lyrics. This 78-minute CD documents the underground '60s counter-cultural aesthetic in full bloom."

Price:

Catalog #:
AA 077CD
1999 release. "Christened after the buzzing guitar sounds emblazoned on each cut, The Litter's
Distortions
album from 1967 is as much a cornerstone of any '60s punk collection as
Here Are the Sonics!!!
or
Black Monk Time
. Kicking off with the smack-you-in-the-face fuzz of the all-time classic 'Action Woman,' the non-stop raving album cuts up British Invasion covers like fellow Minnesotan Paul Bunyan hacking trees and scorches them in a bonfire that climaxes with a fierce rendering of 'I'm A Man.' Your collection already has a space reserved for this remastered reissue of
Distortions
graced by a version of 'Hey Joe' from the same sessions and six bonus cuts recorded live at the Electric Theater in 1968."

$100 Fine
for the complete picture. Featuring the secret-agent aura of '(Under the Screaming Double) Eagle' and a Vanilla Fudged extension of 'She's Not There,' the 1968 opus shines in a dayglo red, white, yellow, and aqua hue that reflects The Litter's expanded musical horizon. And speaking of expansion, we've thrown on enough bonus cuts to double the length of the original album. Both releases include unseen photos and extensive historical essays by

TRICOLI, TANGELA
Title:
Jet Lady
Label:
ARF! ARF! RECORDS
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
AA 096CD
2004 reissue in Arf!Arf!'s Incredibly Strange Music reissue series. "In 1982, Hollywood native Tangela Tricoli felt divine inspiration to record an album's worth of offbeat original songs. Two decades later,
Jet Lady
has become a bona fide music pillar in the pantheon of Outsider music and a highly coveted desert island disc for those sailing the eighth sea. Musically, Tangela's growing reputation among Outsider aficionados is in the ozone with Lucia Pamela, the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and the Shaggs. Paradoxically this left/right brain individual is also the top ranked female pilot for the world's largest airline and the first woman to be licensed to fly a Boeing 747 jumbo jet. Tangela has also improved Einstein's Theory of Relativity (!) and a treatise explaining the details is forthcoming. Her song 'Stinky Poodle' (which appeared on the 2003 Arf Arf compilation
Only In America-Vol 2
) inspired a recent 'Zippy the Pinhead' comic strip. Some even contend that her offbeat persona has provided inspiration for Lisa Kudrow's character, Phoebe, in the TV sitcom 'Friends' and the song 'Smelly Cat' is derivative of Tangela's tune. That claim is credible since she produced a surreal syndicated talk show that ran in Los Angeles for 4 years in the early '80s. This 17-track reissue contains her eccentric album, alternate versions, bonus tracks, and a 2003 remake of 'Stinky Poodle' that features her extended family. The massive 40-page booklet is overflowing with photos, a foreword by Irwin Chusid (author of
Songs in The Key Of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music
), plus an extensive interview by Erik Lindgren. In addition, the CD includes a full hour of quick time video with vintage highlights from her irreverent talk show, footage of Tangela 'unplugged,' plus four TV commercials when she ran for Mayor of LA."

VICTORS, THE
Title:
Victorious (1964-1966)
Label:
ARF! ARF! RECORDS
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
AA 099CD
"Before there was The Litter, there were The Victors. Including two future members (bassist Jim Kane and vocalist Denny Waite) of that fab Minneapolis combo, The Victors didn't have the psycho-destructo stage show, fiery sound, and psychedelicized pyrotechnics of their successors. But their repertoire of British invasion covers laid the groundwork for The Litter, and they had the teen garage sound that propelled them to battle of the bands victories and into the hearts of garage fans when five unreleased recordings were first unearthed by Arf! Arf! on
The Scotty Story
(now out of print) in 1993.
Victorious
expands The Victors' legacy with not only those five, but also 21 previously unreleased tracks, including eight relics from their beginnings as a surf-styled band, a stunning seven-song demo tape, five spirited covers from a 1966 rehearsal, and a raw romp through 'Gloria' (or 'G-L-O-O-R-A,' as they erroneously spelled it!) straight off an acetate. It was all over for The Victors by 1966, but their legacy lived on when Kane and Waite joined former members of The Tabs to form The Litter, a band that grew from garage Yardbirds roots into one of the most innovative hard rock bands on the scene by the late '60s -- and that has been documented on four Arf! Arf! CDs.
Victorious
adds to that legacy with 31 stompin' tracks and an extensive 20-page book featuring tons of archival photos and graphics, a band history by Doug Sheppard of
Ugly Things
magazine, and recollections from their producer, Warren Kendrick."

LIGHTNING
Title:
Lightning 1968-1971
Label:
ARF! ARF! RECORDS
Format:
CD
Price:
$13.00
Catalog #:
AA 100CD
"Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis '60s legends Litter that featured guitar wizard Tom 'Zippy' Caplan. After recording the Litter's 1966 garage classic
Distortions
and 1968 psych masterpiece
$100 Fine
, Caplan split from the Litter and formed Lightning. The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single 'William' b/w 'Of Paupers And Poets' in 1968 under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P. which issued their eight-song album. That album has since become a highly collectable LP. Lightning became one of the Midwest's hardest working rock acts and toured extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure. This authorized CD reissue includes their entire LP, the aforementioned 45, plus six additional bonus tracks (including edited 45 mixes of two album tracks) all wrapped in an archival 12-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter-scribe Doug Sheppard. Between this package and Arf Arf's White Lightning
Strikes Twice [1968-1969]
release, the band's entire musical legacy has been properly archived. Fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix, and Arf Arf's four psychedelic
Dose
comps will really dig this new disc."
