Artist: PERRY, LEE "SCRATCH"
Title: Upsetters 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: CKV 3335CD
"Hot on the heels of Whip Them King Tubby! comes the benchmark Upsetters 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle, produced by Lee Perry, which was recorded in 1973. The Auralux album, in addition to having all tracks on the original album, as they were mixed, has four unreleased recordings from the Black Ark to complete the package. Overall, Upsetters 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle had a certain continuity that most previous Upsetter album releases lacked, and although reggae scholars are still arguing over whether it was the first dub LP or not, it was clearly crucial in giving credibility to the concept of the dub LP and thus greatly added to the validity of the dub format in general. It shows Perry again as a true innovator in his field."

Artist: LEVY, BARRINGTON
Title: Barrington Levy In Dub
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: CKV 3336CD
The Lost Mixes From King Tubby's Studio. "25 years after its initial very limited release, we are exceptionally pleased to present this long-lost dub classic in its original form. Towards the end of the 1970s, Jamaican music was changing dramatically -- the roots reggae era had seen the rise of dreadlocked harmony trios singing of sufferation, but by the start of 1979 a different sound transfixed the island as a whole new legion of fresh talent began rising out of Kingston's dancehalls. The most important and best admired vocalist to emerge from the dancehall movement was Barrington Levy. Once Barrington hooked up with political 'enforcer' turned record producer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes, the dancehall style reached international prominence."

Artist: SCIENTIST AND PRINCE JAMMY
Title: Dub Landing Volume 1 & 2
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: CKV 4815CD
Domestic version of the previous Auralux label CD, originally issued in 2006. "Overton Brown was only 16 years old when producer/performer Errol 'Don' Mais discovered and used the considerable talents of this adolescent dub whiz. In the later '70s, after honing his skills under the guidance of King Tubby and Don Mais, Scientist (now also referred to as 'The Dub Chemist') became the main engineer at Channel One Studios, and working with Henry 'Junjo' Lawes, cut some best-selling dub LPs, including the two LPs that have been combined to form Dub Landing Volume 1 and 2. Mixed by Scientist with Prince Jammy, and produced by Linval Thompson, this release has backing vocals by The Roots Radics. Also on the CD are Stana Davis on drums, Flabba Holt on bass, lead guitar by Swell, rhythm by Bingy Bunny, organ by Winston Wright & Steely, piano by Gladdy, and percussion by Sky Juice Blake & Skully. This is the first time both original 1981 vinyl albums are released on one CD, and includes 20 tracks."

Artist: LEVY, BARRINGTON
Title: Shaolin Temple
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: CKV 4816CD
"Barrington Levy was easily the most important vocalist to emerge from the early dancehall movement. In fact, more than any other singer or deejay, Barrington was the crucial element that made dancehall a viable entity at the end of the 1970s. Shaolin Temple, the subject of this reissue, was released in Jamaica on Jah Guidance, the label Junjo formed with friend Linval Thompson, while Robin Hood and Englishman were subsequently released in the UK by Greensleeves. Shaolin Temple was created with Jamaican audiences in mind, the album portrays Barrington at his rawest. Shaolin Temple represents the singer's auspicious beginnings, and still sounds fresh over two and- a-half decades later, it highlights the voice and delivery that were to bring the singer international acclaim. This release marks the first time the 1979 release Shaolin Temple has been released on CD, and includes three bonus tracks, all expertly produced by Junjo with the Roots Radics backing Barrington."

Title: King Jammy in Roots
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: LUXX 008CD
"King Jammy is best known as the man that launched Jamaican music's digital revolution. Indeed, he produced 'Sleng Teng', the first fully digital Jamaican hit and one of the most-versioned rhythms of all time. King Jammy in Roots collects some of Jammy's most enthralling productions from the late 1970s and early 1980s with high-calibre artists such as Black Uhuru, Hugh Mundell, Augustus Pablo, Lacksley Castell, Junior Reid and Johnny Osbourne ; Jammy's unique, atmospheric dubs complete the picture. After an uneventful youth in Montego Bay, Lloyd 'Jammy' James found himself living a few doors down from King Tubby in the Waterhouse ghetto of western Kingston. The pair became very close and as Tubby's young apprentice, Jammy learned the vital electrical knowledge that is key to operating a sound system. After spending the early 1970s in Toronto, Jammy returned to Jamaica to become the right-hand man at Tubby's legendary studio; he then started recording local talent after receiving encouragement from producers Bunny Lee and Yabby You."

Title: Sly and Robbie's Taxi Sound Marking 30 Years of Taxi Records
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: LUXX 010CD
"A celebration of the label founded by what some call the most successful production team to come out of Jamaica -- Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespear. The album collects together the key recordings from the late 70's and early 80's, a period when the Rhythm Twins produced some of their most enduring and captivating music. During their long careers they have lent their magic to a vast range of international artists including Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Herbie Hancock, and Grace Jones to Ian Dury, Gwen Guthrie, Doug E. Fresh and No Doubt. The album showcases the depth and breadth of the Sly and Robbie's production skills. Highlights includes The Tamlins' harmonically excellent rendition of The Undisputed Truth's 'Smiling Faces Sometime' together with their extended version of Nina Simone's take on Randy Newman's 'Baltimore'. There's also Sugar Minott's 'Rub A Dub', General Echo at his unbridled best with the witty 'Drunken Master', a salute to the early Jackie Chan kung-fu epic, Gregory Isaacs' 'Going Down Town' and the Taxi Gang's tongue-in-cheek cut of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean', Dennis Brown and much more. Since the release of the recordings that make up this compilation, Sly and Robbie have ventured into the farthest reaches of sonic exploration, crafting a range of inspiring styles across the globe. But the heart and soul of their music will always be best illustrated by their Taxi sound -- one of the most consistently innovative record labels to ever come out of Jamaica."

Artist: PRINCE JAMMY
Title: Dub Contest
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: LUXX 016CD
"This fantastic dub confrontation album was released in 1979 in a limited edition, pitting the mixing skills of two of Jamaica's most talented engineers against each other. The disc was produced by Ken 'Fatman' Gordon, one of the most important sound system operators active in Britain during the 1970s: because Fatman hailed from Waterhouse and still had family members in the area, he enjoyed a close association with many of the leading producers and artists that hailed from that vibrant west Kingston slum; he was a regular visitor to King Tubby's legendary dub studio in Waterhouse and also regularly cut special exclusive mixes of new material at various rival studios such as Lee Perry's Black Ark, Channel One and Joe Gibbs. As Fatman had already been releasing Prince Jammy's early productions in Britain, and as Jammy was rapidly rising to be one of the most respected producers and engineers of the period, it came as no surprise that Jammy mixed the first side of this disc; side two features the work of 'Crucial Bunny' Graham, aka 'Bunny Tom Tom,' one of the in-house engineers at Channel One studio. Highlights of the album, which has never been reissued and remains highly sought-after, include thoroughly dubwise cuts of Johnnie Clarke's 'Play Fool Fe Catch Wise,' Black Uhuru's post-rockers take of the Wailers' 'Sun Is Shining,' and Johnny Clarke/I Roy's supreme re-working of 'Satta.'" Title: Shaolin Temple
Label: AURALUX RECORDINGS (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: LUXX 018CD
"Barrington Levy was easily the most important vocalist to emerge from the early dancehall movement. In fact, more than any other singer or deejay, Barrington was the crucial element that made dancehall a viable entity at the end of the 1970s. The disc opens with 'Wedding Ring,' a spongy adaptation of the Heptones' 'Hold Me Strong' with original lyrics from Barrington, followed by a dancehall recasting of the Treasure Isle classic, 'Moonlight Lover.' Next comes the original 'Bounty Hunter,' which evokes the days when runaway slaves had a price on their head, before a particularly menacing take of Horace Andy's 'Skylarking,' while 'It's Not Easy' has Barrington singing of the wisdom of Rastafari as a remedy for life's hardships over a slow and breezy re-cut of the Silvertones' 'Smile.' On 'Looking My Love,' Barrington transforms the evergreen 'Real Rock' into a song of romantic strife, while the popular 'Shine Eye Girl' warns of female avarice. The original title track made reference to the martial arts films so influential in Jamaica, while 'Reggae Music' mutated the 'Full Up' rhythm for a salutation of the glorious sound. Closing off the original album was the smash-hit 'Collie Weed,' seemingly an adaptation of Slim Smith's 'My Conversation,' now relating to strong herb; the song is notable not only as the first hit for Barrington, but also as the first song to be mixed by Scientist at King Tubby's studio." Also features 3 extended versions of "Stray Away Girl," "Hammer," and "Shaolin Temple," plus the Lawes Rockers/Jah Thomas version. Last copies, deleted item.
