JONES, LEE
Title:
Electronic Frank
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
AUS 002CD
This is the debut solo album by Berlin-based
Lee Jones
. He lived in London until 2002, where he was producing and remixing as the successful downtempo/nu-jazz artist
Hefner
, but followed his heart to Berlin where he was inspired by the music and clubs to move into a new production style. Most recently, he's become known as the main creative force behind
MyMy
, whose debut album
Songs For The Gentle
on Playhouse made waves across the globe. Since 2007, he's released his beautiful solo works on Aus Music and Just, while also collaborating with Berlin local hero
Daniel Dreier
on releases for Upon You and releasing new MyMy material on Berlin's illustrious Ostgut Ton imprint.
Electronic Frank
is full of surprising and heartwarming moments that open out unexpectedly from richly-textured grooves. He pulls melody and harmony from the most abstract places and spaces, yet makes them work together like few producers can. His wistful melodies, combined with his spacious programming, allows you to drift off into your own thoughts, yet the detail in the sound design can snap you back to reality in a second. The first half of the album is a lush, rich, intricate tapestry. Quirky and playful. Inviting and detailed. The pace is gentle, the vibe relaxed. Individually sung words and vocal snippets lend a human touch, and when layered with an imaginary orchestra full of opulent harps, sweeping strings, delicate pianos, bouncy accordions and all manner of weird and wonderful instruments, it creates a dramatic effect. On "Roadwork" and "The Secret," the groove is stripped back, giving the melodies a feeling of space and power. The mood darkens with the sinister guitar licks of "Shoe Shine" before the intensity dial is cranked up fully with "Every Click Matters," which sounds like
Timbaland
might if he'd hung out in Berlin for the last 5 years. "It Is, Isn't It" and "Safari" are drawn from equally freakish sound pallettes -- trumpets (real and of the Elephant variety), flutes, timpani, insect sounds, bird calls, the list goes on. They are percussively explosive, rhythmically beguiling, full of surprises and packed with sounds that shouldn't work but do. Brilliantly. The climax of the album is "MDMAzing" and we think the title says it all. Don't take it too seriously -- it's supposed to make you smile.

MY MY
Title:
Butterflies & Zebras EP
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 602EP
"The members of My My met and became friends through common interests in music, but it wasn't until they ended up as neighbours in Berlin's Mitte, that a lifestyle of committed partying, cake baking and long studio sessions lead to their debut release on Playhouse
Klatta
in early 2005. It was the result of previously downtempo producer Lee Jones (Hefner) working and partying with local Berlin DJs Nick Höppner and Carsten Kleeman, who are residents respectively at Panorama Bar and Watergate. Following up their recent fantastic 12" on Circus Company, 'Butterflies & Zebras' is beautifully tripped-out expansive ambient house, summer after-hours here we come! Recorded live with Nick and Lee layering fx over the organic percussion as the mix develops, an acid-infused bassline is slowly opened out as layers of lush strings and shimmering pads are teased into the arrangement. On 'Moneybowl,' the boys show the more jacking side of My My. Tight and lean with a groove that keeps on evolving, while weird and wonderful bleeps and clicks bounce around the mix. For the remix, John Dahlbäck twists the pads from the original and adds his own synth stabs, pulling out a bassline and arrangement that jumps straight onto the dancefloor."

SIDESHOW
Title:
Philly Soundworks
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 603EP
With Jesse Rose & Lee Jones remixes. "Philly Soundworks is inspired by the energy and bounce of the early 'go-go' scene in Philly, Sideshow gives us his own interpretation of organic, spacey mid-tempo disco. Delicate keys and a one-take, live bass line played by Fin himself are perfectly complimented by a heavy rolling drum pattern. Let loose on the controls, Fin applies a heavy dose of dub to all fx and percussion twisting the vibe until everything is irie. Jesse Rose pushes the original into peak time territory with tough jacking drums and taught 'n' lean percussive fills. He really goes to work on the keys -- doubling them up and chopping them in and out of the mix to add to the trademark feeling of fidget. By the time a massive acid-laced lead line is introduced, hands are well and truly in the air. Lee Jones' mix can only be described as brilliantly unique. A throbbing journey from start to finish. You cannot fail to fall for his heart-warming chord progression as he teases Fin's original stabs into the mix."

There Comes a Time
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:

Price:

Catalog #:
AUS 604EP
With remix and additional production by Prins Thomas. "Essex bred Lee Jones lived in London until 2002, where he was producing and remixing as the downtempo/ nu-jazz artist, Hefner. After following his heart to Berlin, he was inspired by the music and clubs to move into a new production style. For the past 2 years he has been recording and performing live as part of the successful Playhouse signed trio, My My. For 'There Comes A Time' Lee's blissed out chords drift effortlessly around a squelchy melody while chunky drums bounce in and out of the mix. The tension builds as the groove evolves, more sublime melody is introduced into the arrangement that'll have you reaching for those lasers. It's one of those tracks that just oozes its own unique character. Futuristic deep house at its very best. On the flip side, Prins Thomas gets to work. The master of the delay unit creates a build-up of feedback and meshes this into an ominously throbbing bassline that swells with intensity throughout the arrangement to create tension and impact. When combined with Lee's euphoric chords it creates real excitement. Groundbreaking modern disco. Norwegian Prins Thomas is an underdog remix champ renowned for his disco stylings. Label boss of Feedelity, where he releases with Lindstrøm, his background was in rather bad band-projects and collecting records. As well as DJing, remixing and producing, he also plays semi-live with Lindstrøm."

Title:
African Cheri (Stefan Goldmann Rmx)
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 705EP
"Sideshow is the alter ego of Fink -- the well-respected work-o-holic producer, musician, remixer and live performer on Ninja Tune. Sideshow's sound was born of a need to play pure dance music, initially created as the antithesis of the turntablist heavy Ninja culture, but drawing on the experience. For the original of 'African Cheri' we find ourselves asking the question 'is it disco, is it dub, is it techno, or all of the above?' Who cares when Sideshow's at the controls, as the groove is so tight. Starting out all straight and robotic until the disco loops and percussive samples are cut into the mix. The live bass is accompanied by Sideshow's typical dub flashes before things are taken to the next level with a squelchy electronic variation of the bass line that is, well, quite simply... filthy. Stefan Goldmann uses the guitars from Sideshow's original to set the musical tone before building a wonderfully tripped out melody. Layers of found sound, clicks and whirrs are delicately woven around Stefan's resonant drums and lead melody, resulting in a delicate harmony that underpins the mix."

MOTORCITYSOUL
Title:
Kazan (Exit Cube)
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 706EP
"Frankfurt's eclectic duo of C-Rock & Matthias Vogt have released records under the moniker of Motorcitysoul for the past three years, putting out on Infracom, Stir15 and LoFi Stereo before this, their first for Aus. Hailing from Germany's own 'Motor City,' the pair have developed a reputation for creating soulful and deep house that more than competes with their stateside counterparts. Kazan's taught, tough drums and a chunky sub bass combine with rich analog lead sequences and a heartfelt string line straight out of the Motor City to drive this track to its smiley, sweaty peak. An old school appreciation, futuristic production touches and a real musical pedigree give this real power and more than enough weight to ignite the floor. With My My's remix the original shines through the fantastically bouncy groove with enough delicate tweaks and flashes of their own sweet melody to make this My My through and through."

Title:
Hug The Scary
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 707EP
"Aus continue to release the best and brightest of contemporary dance music with the
Hug The Scary
EP, a collaboration between luminaries Will Saul and Lee Jones. Will Saul is best known as the head of Simple Records, up for nomination as Best British Label in
DJ
Magazine this year and also sister label to the more experimental Aus imprint on which this EP is released. Opener 'Hug The Scary' is a transcendental journey. Trace echoes of melody encircle an intensifying percussive step, filtering to a chimed key reflection. Tonal themes fade in, compete, distort and then depart, making way for peaks of overwhelming melody, with only the fittest surviving and elevating to the sublime. On the flip side, Partial Arts (the duo of Ewan Pearson and Al Usher) give their own, heavily percussive account of the proceedings. Stormy fuzz and bubble bath accents introduce a funk bassline and interplay between looped guitar and tonal melody. A sci-fi synth haze halts and then dictates the progression into a saturated melodic climax."

SIAN
Title:
Apple Tree
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 708EP
"Graham Goodwin aka Sian is a Dublin native raised gypsy-style in southern Spain. As a self-confessed workaholic spaced-out nature junkie, his commitment to the avant garde lifestyle has seen him grace decks at the nicest clubs and festivals in the world. He's also released two albums and many singles on labels as diverse as Pokerflat, Dessous, Karmarouge, Dirtcrew and Einmaleins. The title track is a lush techno affair that nods to old Detroit, building with rasps, clicks and clocks that drive through purring fx and melodic chamber resonance. A gentle synth progression moves towards the finish through metallic block echos and whirring tones. Berlin deep house mogul Efdemin invokes a sublime transformation and heads straight for the Balearic islands. The swinging 4/4 beat builds steam with shakers suddenly illuminated by bright resonating chimes and mellow melodic pulses. The warm melody floats like a scented summer breeze over a wave of hi-hats, stabbed synth and salt shake shuffles. Sunshine on a rainy day! Efdemin recently released his debut album on his home, Dial Records, home to Pantha Du Prince, Lawrence and Carsten Jost."

Space Kätzle
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$10.00
Catalog #:
AUS 709EP
"Monster Sydenham remix! Frankfurt's eclectic duo of C-Rock & Matthias Vogt return with their second release on Aus. They have released records under the moniker of Motorcitysoul for the past three years, putting out on Infracom, Stir15 and LoFi Stereo. Hailing from Germany's own Motown, the pair have developed a reputation for creating soulful and deep house that more than competes with their State-side counterparts, typified by their celebrated collaboration with vocalist Chez Damier 'Kids In The Streets' in 2005. 'Space Kätzle' has a beautifully simple yet immediately recognizable chord sequence, with layers of sparkling melody that cascade down the stereo pallet for what is a true end of the night anthem. For the remix, Jerome Sydenham toughens up the drums, adds a delicate tom pattern and backs up the original melody with his own chords taking the Space Cats (Space Kätzle) into a darker, more tribal place."

As You Like It

AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:

Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
AUS 812EP
"Essex-bred Lee Jones lived in London until 2002, where he was producing and remixing as the downtempo/nu-jazz artist, Hefner. After following his heart to Berlin, he was inspired by the music and clubs to move into a new production style and for the past 3 years he's been the creative production force behind My My, whose debut album
Songs For The Gentle
made waves across the globe. 'As You Like It': a crisp lead melody leads us by the hand into a full-on old school Chicago stab fest. Lee's typically intricate tom pattern nestles underneath the taut drums, keeping the rhythm section bouncing along. Yes, it is indeed how we like it! Perhaps Lee's most peak time record to date. 'Recloose Remix': a real summer treat. Matt reinterprets Lee's stabs and adds his own p-funk infused live bass line and chords, which totally change the vibe. In the the words of Jimpster, 'a mutoid boogie rinse out.' 'The Ice Train Cometh': shimmering pads are intertwined with snippets of a female vocal EQ'd to sound eerily icy. Only Lee could make this '80s bass sound feel so contemporary. Matthew Chicoine aka Recloose, made his name signed to the fantastic Planet E label over the past decade. Having studied music at Ann Arbor and cutting his teeth as a college DJ, Recloose went on to be a turntablist for Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra, the esoteric Uri Caine Ensemble, globe-trotting far and wide to collect musical influences. The burgeoning musical scene of Wellington has offered fresh inspiration to a mind already brimming with talent."

Safari EP
Label:
AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
AUS 813EP
Safari
is the first EP taken from
Lee Jones
' debut album
Electronic Frank
on Aus Music. "Safari" evokes the sounds of a seriously twisted jungle. Elephant trumpets swathed in reverb and detuned bird calls combine with percussive loops to create something truly fresh.
Stimming
tweaks and twists the sounds, increasing the groove while fattening up the drums. "Roadworks"' jacking, stripped-back groove and pitch-shifted stab sequence is softened with a blissful chord sequence that changes the vibe completely -- spine-tingling.

AUS 814EP
Soon
is the second EP taken from
Lee Jones
' debut album
Electronic Frank
on Aus Music. Quirky and playful, 'Soon' is full of real instrumentation with individually sung words and vocal snippets. The
Mole
remix cuts up the vocals and uses fragments for percussive hits with melodic textures. Reminiscent of early
Isolee
, "The Secret" offers a deliciously soulful lead line while the title of "MDMAzing" says it all -- don't take it too seriously, it's supposed to make you smile.
