"Avant-garde composer and sound installation artist Takehisa Kosugi (musical director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company) has led the Japanese avant-garde music scene since the early 1960s. In 1969 he formed the Taj Mahal Travellers, a musical collective that travelled the world in a VW minibus creating Fluxus-influenced improvised multimedia sound events. This double album (divided into two LPs), recorded live at the Nippon Columbia Studio in Tokyo in 1974, was the group's final effort before disbanding. Here Kosugi and the Travellers blend Eastern and Western instrumentation, vocal chants and electronics to create free-form psych-laden drones. "Just a few months before Albert Ayler presumably jumped to his death from the Statue of Liberty ferry into the frigid November waters of NYC's East River he was on stage for two energy filled nights at the Fondation de Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. Little did he know at the time that the recordings from these live performances would be his last. Although the band is not of the same calibre as some of his earlier ensembles, Ayler -- largely with the help of Call Cobbs on piano -- still manages one of the best live performances of his career. "Invited to play the University of Michigan in February of 1970, Miles Davis treated audiences to one of the most groundbreaking moments in jazz. He played the title track from his upcoming Bitches Brew album. The album would not be released until a few months later, so those who were in the audience were privy to a revolution in jazz in the making. Bringing in electric instruments and a guitar-heavy, rock-infused sensibility, Miles Davis once again led jazz music into the future. When Bitches Brew was finally released it became Miles Davis' first gold album and one of the first jazz albums to cross over to a rock audience. Side two of this album is taken from a show Miles' septet played near Zurich in October 1971. 'Yesternow' had been recently released on Miles' Tribute To Jack Johnson album. This album is also considered one of the greatest jazz fusion albums in history. In keeping with the black power message, the central theme of 'Yesternow' is appropriately taken from James Brown's historic 'Say It Loud,' while 'Sanctuary,' is a Wayne Shorter composition from Bitches Brew." "Rare 1971 live recording from a concert Miles Davis played with his electrified fusion septet-Gary Bartz (sax), Keith Jarrett (keyboards), Michael Henderson (electric bass), Ndugu Leon Chancler (drums), Charles Don Alias (congas), James Mtume Foreman (congas) -- at the Stadthalle venue in Dietikon, near Zurich. This appears to be a soundboard recording, although the sound quality is excellent. Appropriately Miles leads off the set with 'Directions,' a Joe Zawinul composition that was part of the pioneering In A Silent Way sessions. Miles opened every live concert with this piece for many years. 'Funky Tonk' and 'What I Say' gave audiences a preview of his upcoming Live Evil album on Columbia, released just a month after this show." "1972 was a busy year for Japan's favorite experimental rock band. After several months spent touring Europe, group leader Takehisa Kosugi (currently music director for the Merce Cunningham dance company in the USA) decided to make good on the band's name and embark on a monumental voyage across Europe and Asia, driving a VW bus from Rotterdam all the way to the Taj Mahal in India. Amazingly, the band got as far as Pakistan before having to fly the rest of the way to the Taj Mahal due to border restrictions. By July of 1972, the band was back home in Japan, and still playing nonstop. The three tracks on side A were recorded live during this historic tour, while side B was recorded a year later at the famous Oz Club in Tokyo, during a five day music festival celebrating the venue's final days." "At The Bunkhouse Coffeehouse was English-born folk singer David Wiffen's first solo album, recorded live in 1965 at the Bunkhouse Coffeehouse in Vancouver, Canada. Throughout the 1960s Wiffen played in numerous bands on the Canadian folk scene, but in 1971 tasted mainstream fame when his self-titled studio debut, David Wiffen, was released. The album included two hits, 'More Often Than Not' (which went to the top of the charts) and 'Driving Wheel', famously covered by Tom Rush, the Byrds, Cowboy Junkies, etc. For his next album, 1973's Coast To Coast Fever, Wiffen famously collaborated with Bruce Cockburn, who both produced and played on the album." 140 gram vinyl. "After six years spent away from the public eye (1975-1981) due to a long period of illness and addiction, Miles Davis finally returned to music with 1981's The Man With the Horn. And just to prove that he was fully out of retirement, Davis embarked on a tour of Europe in the spring of 1982. It was his first European tour since 1971 and fans came out in droves to see the Prince Of Darkness. By April 26 April 1982 Davis and an all-star band (featuring Bill Evans on sax, Marcus Miller on bass, Mike Stern on guitar, Al Foster on drums and French musician Minu Cinelu on percussions) had made their way down to Rome where they played two sold out sets. "Blues Creation was formed in 1969 by Japanese axe-hero Kazuo Takeda, along with fellow guitarist Koh Eiryu and singer Fumio Nunoya (later of Dew). Initially influenced by the likes of the Yardbirds and Cream, group mastermind Takeda soon decided to move the heavier territory occupied by bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin. But at the same time Blues Creation had morphed into something truly original, focused more on song writing and looking into their own Japanese roots as well as to the West. "After the release of their third LP in March 1969, the Velvets (with Doug Yule now on bass) embarked on a nationwide tour, playing over seventy dates all around the US. One of these included a stint at the 'End Of Cole Avenue' club in Dallas--one of the Velvets few live performances where a professional sound engineer was actually on hand to record the sets. Some of the songs recorded over those few nights showed up in 1974 on their 1969: Velvet Underground Live album, but the sound quality was not great due to Mercury's use of third or fourth generation tapes. However, the first generation tapes have since resurfaced, and the difference in sound quality (heard here) is a welcome one. This version also features a few songs, like 'I'm Set Free' and 'One Of These Days', not found on the original LP."
